Throughout this semester in this this class, I have been faced with a tremendous amount of challenges, some that stumbled me, some that I in a way even conquered. This class has caused me many sleepless nights and a few nervous breakdowns. If I had to describe this class in two words, it would be an all around awkward struggle. Although, I’d have to say, I have seen such an enormous change in myself as well as my confidence throughout the duration of this semester. I have battled, conquered, and completely overcame things I never honestly knew I was able to. In my own opinion, I consider myself a better public speaker all around, both physically and mentally from where I have began. I find myself getting less and less nervous every time it …show more content…
I am very curious to see if I continue to change and become a better public speaker or if I just run away from my next speech like I usually do. I know that I will use the techniques from this class in my future classes to help me relax and feel more confident when I get up in front of the class. As much as I do not want to say this, but I do believe that public speaking should be required. I say this because if I never took this class, I would still have such horrible anxiety towards making speeches in front of an audience. This class helps people become better speakers and feel more comfortable in front of a classroom. This class can help every student for the future because no matter what job you have in life, you are going to have to talk to people and maybe even in front of an audience. It is something that you are not able to run away from forever, no matter what, it will catch up to you. So this class should stay in all universities because it is a class that will actually help you grow, even if you are already a good speaker. This class helps you understand the elements of three different types of speeches; personal, informative and persuasive, all things you will most likely need in the
As many people have told me before, it is a very different ballgame than middle school’s easy going years. There is much more work, the classes are harder, and the environment is completely different. Many people’s grades may slip and they may cower in fear at the barrage of assignments they receive class after class. Unlike other people, I am confident in my ability to excel at all classes and to sustain exemplary grades. Therefore, while many are trembling in fear at the prodigious assignments and work is bombarding them from all angles, I will be at ease, knowing that whatever obstacle is thrown my way, I will conquer it and be its own
Few people are fearless speakers. As students, we generally feel the rumble of butterflies in our stomachs, but the most we have to lose is a good grade.
As I planed to take this class, I thought this course would be like all other general education courses. I believed that it would be of little use to me. However, after attending the first class, my view has changed completely. I applied each and every theory to my life.
...teachers in the SMU community has increased my confidence. My self-assurance is so much stronger now that maybe people will start to look to me as a source of confidence. Maybe, just maybe, people will finally see me as somebody they can lean on too.
The other two children that were asked to preach went ahead of me and they were as nervous as I was. As soon as they finished I stepped up to the podium and all nervousness and anxiety went away. I finished giving my first 20 minute sermon with no stuttering, no hiccups, or mistakes. Throughout my school career I have been placed in many leadership positions. Many times when there is a group project to be done the group that I am assigned to choose me to spear head the project. In middle school when I was a part of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), I was chosen to be the president of the group. I value school and the things we learn in it. Some courses may not be my strong points but I still try to take away as much as I can from the subjects. I am currently in the dental program at E.C. Glass, and every day the teacher shows us a new tool or technique I’m in the front of the class studying it. Even in my English courses, I take note of the information my teacher gives us and apply it to my writing to improve it. My thirst for knowledge doesn’t
In today’s world students and adults who can use the power of public speaking are a rare find. Lucas states in chapter one that “the American Management Association asked 2,000 managers and executives to rank the skills most essential in today’s workplace. The top idea, was communication skills” (Lucas, 2012 pg. 5). This statement showes us that college students who have taking public speaking truly have an advantage over those who have
...dless of what I am trying to accomplish. I feel that I am much better now, in persuading someone through my writings; which would definitely come in handy in the future. The responsibility I have gained during this experience is incredible and has taught me to be a much more organized person. During this semester I was taught a process of how to write a paper and organize it. I found that all of these responsibilities have made me realize that I could definitely take the next step forward in my academic career. Each new experience I involve myself in has made me continue to grow and constantly learn something new. I am someone who has never really enjoyed English classes in the past and I when I registered for English 101 I only saw it as a requirement to graduate but I really did enjoy this English course and I know that it was something that was worthwhile for me.
The class helped me learn how to overcome fear of public speaking which was brought about by anxiety and fear which was mainly contributed by lack of exposure. During this class I learned many ways of overcoming this menace, the class groups that served as the audience helped in practicing and getting over the anxiety and fear I also got positive critic...
Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. I just wanted to do my best in this class and just breeze through this class and get it over with. Getting up in front of the class for my first speech, was petrifying for me
One of the biggest fears I have had to overcome in high school is my fear of public speaking. I was always comfortable in the classroom; I loved discussing current events and explaining different biology and history to my friends, but I could not stand in front of them to give a presentation. Whenever I stood in front of my classmate speak, I would begin to shake so much that I could not read any notes I may have brought up with me. I was an absolute wreck and I hated that I could not overcome my phobia; however, my fear of public speaking is incredibly ironic because my sister teaches public speaking on a collegiate level. When I told my sister that I was horrified of standing up and speaking in front of my classmates, she was surprised. My sister told me that I could not let my fear stop me from speaking because I would likely never get over it. In addition, she
When reading the opening lecture I cringed at the thought of dealing with communication. Sort of that belly ache feeling you get when you had to do an oral presentation in front of the class in elementary school. I understand have a number of strong qualities but self-image and my perception are still traits I long to improve.
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
It is important to be organized in this class in order to keep track of all the speeches and to organize a time span where you can practice your speech. On the other hand, I feel it is important to find your speaking style because that way you can adjust your speech with the way you speak. For example, I tend to speak very fast so, I like to create speeches that flow with the speed of my communication. One of the most important things in this class is to attend. Student have to attend this class because there are various opportunities to learn how to improve their skills and to observe other forms of communications by their fellow classmates. Lastly, the main foundation for any good speech is to create many drafts for your speeches. For any future oral communication students to succeed in this course, I would recommend to simple practice. A phrase that is often times very repeated but, it is very important for an oral communication class. If you do not practice your speeches because if you do not practice you will not deliver a proficient speech. Besides practicing your speeches, it is important to create speech draft before creating your
At first I thought I would never make it to be a motivational speaker. However, this class has really altered the perception and understanding about me as a public speaker. It has enabled me discover the potential I had in this field. At the commencement of my classes in public speaking, I thought I would be a boring public speaker, less convincing, less persuasive and would freak out if asked to offer an impromptu speech. But it has come to my light that in fact this is the field where I would want to pursue my career in, it is the field that my dream lies in. I realized that I could make excellent speeches, entertain my audience and always keep them eager to expect my next words.
