As of late certain acts of discipline are being considered child abuse and causing much controversy around the world. Certain disciplinary acts such as spanking and paddling have been banned in many countries. In the article ‘You can't Spank Kids in these Countries’ it is believed that Canada will be the next country to ban these acts. The article quotes a facebook user who was spanked as a child. He wrote ¨This is silly, I was spanked, my brothers were spanked¨ implying it’s an acceptable way to discipline a child.
Spanking can be a good form of discipline if used within reason as portrayed in the article ‘Spanking Can Be an Appropriate form of Child Discipline’. The article mentions NFL player Adrian Peterson´s recent arrest for allegedly
Social tolerance of spanking has been the norm for thousands of years. The most widely accepted source coming from the bible. He who spares the rod hates the son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline (New International Version, Proverbs 13:24). Religion and culture have been a very common excuse for the spanking of children world-wide. “Hitting children is intertwined with religious beliefs, cultural views, and social policy… (Kazden & Benjet). However, the world has changed and evolved into a much more civilized society. In this country alo...
Did you know that over half of the population spanks their children? The idea of using spanking as a punishment has raised controversy among parents. Spanking is the use of an open hand to strike someone and many parents want it to become illegal. While spanking has some down sides, it should remain legal because making it illegal would be difficult to enforce, and there are already laws against child abuse.
Whether or not, students in public schools should wear uniforms has become a major point of discussion. Some students do not really care anymore about wearing appropriate dress for school in the last decade, and that situation has created a negative environment. To overcome that, a policy requiring school uniforms hasbeen adopted by many schools, and some schools are thinking about it. Obviously, school uniforms will greatly benefit both students and faculty by creating a positive environment for their education.Public school students should have to wear uniforms because they also help students to be safe and parents to save money.
Many authorities and psychologists believe that spanking breaks a child's spirit and only leads to violence. They think that it causes the child to become depressed, angry or hostile and they have conducted many studies to prove these things. This type of harsh punishment occurs often, but it is called child abuse. There is a great difference between abusing a child and properly disciplining a child. "One is an act of love; the other is an act of hostility, and they are as different as night and day" (Dobson 35).
"All people have the right to protection of their physical integrity, and children are people too”(Hunt). Children are physically punished to correct their negative behaviors; however, there has been a dispute about whether or not it is acceptable for parents to spank their children as a form of punishment since children have the same rights to be respected like adults. Most adults would argue that it is acceptable for parents to physically punish their children with spanking because there are benefits to discipling children using this method, but even though the opposing argument is valid, spanking children as punishment has long term effects that can negatively change the child’s behavior. Documentation presents reasons why it is not okay for parents to spank their children as the only form of punishment.
The issue of spanking is whether it is justifiable or an act of child abuse. Some child specialists, such as Christine Walsh and Michael Boyle, argue that if a parent must administer a spanking, it should not be through anger and only as a last option when other forms of discipline have been deemed unsuccessful. They say that for a spanking to be instructive it must be...
I Believe that parents have no rights to use spanking as a form of discipline on their children, because physical force should never be used on a developing child, and might lead to future physical or psychological damage to their kids. Spanking has been a topic of debate for parents throughout the age. It has been argued that spanking is a valid way to teach your child not to do something. Most people explained that they were disciplined that way. It is a method that is passed on from parent on to parent believing it is the best way to deal with inappropriate behavior.
There is always a heated debate behind the question “Is it ok to spank a disobedient child?” or if it should even be allowed. Based on the research I have completed I believe that it is completely ok to discipline by spanking. Spanking in not a form of child abuse like many people sat but instead it is a punitive redirection when verbal redirection will not suffice. As a child I was defiant, not in a despicable way, I just liked to do things my own way and be independent as a result of this personality trait I received many verbal redirections and spankings before my mother became abusive not just physically but verbally as well, however, the abuse was not because of the spankings but were because of her personality traits of manipulation and
Recently, NFL superstar running back Adrian Peterson was arrested for allegedly severely disciplining his four-year-old son. This latest news has sparked another fresh debate over whether or not parents should be allowed to spank their children. What Peterson did to his children was very wrong and harsh, and it is not the type of spanking that is tolerable. There is a difference between disciplining a child by mildly spanking them for making a mistake they made and between taking out anger and venting emotions by harshly hitting their children. Spanking a child mildly that sends a clear message to what they have done wrong can be a very effective tool to shape their behavior in a positive way. Jamie Wilson stated
I think an even more important question to ask is “what is effective discipline?” According to Telep, “effective discipline helps children learn to control their behavior so that they act according to their ideas of what is right and wrong, not because they fear punishment.” We have already established that spanking is not a form of discipline, yet many parents consider it as discipline because they think that it is efficient in teaching children right from wrong. However, it should be pointed out, and Telep agrees with me, that physical punishment creates fear within a child, rather than teaching them what they did wrong. Therefore, it still rings true that spanking is not a disciplinary method because it is, in fact, a method of
Spanking is a disciplinary act that has been used by parents for years now. It does not seem like a big deal at the time, but spanking does have long term effects that can affect the child even when he or she is a adult. Spanking whether it is appropriate for parents or any guardian of a child should be allowed to spank their child or not. There is a lot of controversy because parents say kids need to be disciplined when they are behaving badly. Others say parents shouldn 't spank their child because they long-term outcome is worse and they are not teaching the child a lesson. Some parents agree with these specialist and don 't spank their child but use other ways of discipline that doesn 't involve hurting
Corporal punishment among children has been around for decades. Many years ago, it was allowed for educators to punish students who were misbehaving by hitting them with a wooden paddle on their behind. As time continued to pass, it became against the law for the school employees to discipline the students who took part in misconduct. The parents became the only people with the right to discipline their children. Today, parents continue to have the right to spank their children however it is now an issue that is frowned upon by many. Spanking is detrimental to children because it can damage the relationship between the parent and child, promotes the act of violence, and can cause the child to develop mental disorders.
When I was a child, I could not remember a time when my parents spanked me. I asked my mom how she and my dad disciplined my three brothers and I, and she said she never spanked us. When we got into trouble we were sent to our room, and had privileges taken away. My mom also said that she can remember spanking my younger brother once, but left a bruise on his bottom, and she felt so bad that she never did it again.
The debate whether the use of physical punishment (e.g. spanking, slapping) should be used as a form of discipline is a controversial one. Some parents believe that there is nothing wrong with physical punishment, while some parents believe that physical punishment should only be used in certain instances (e.g. spanking or slapping a child for touching or playing with something dangerous), and then there are parents who believe that a child should never be physically punished. While most people agree that getting physical (hitting) with someone is wrong, physically punishing a child continues to be uses as an acceptable form of discipline. Most parents use physical punishment as a means to stop a child from engaging in unacceptable behavior or to get a child to comply(Gershoff, 2010), such reasons may be effective in the short term, however a parent should not only be focusing on the short term they should be focusing on the long term results. The goals of a parent should be promoting good behavior with rewards thus producing long term compliance. Physical punishment decreases positive behaviors thus affecting a child’s behavior opposite to what the parents intended.
As children grow up, they’re more than likely exposed to being disciplined in one way or another. “Surveys of parents show that 90 percent have used some form of physical punishment on their children” (Graziano 1). So therefore, we can all agree that when it comes down to being punished, parents more often than not resort to spanking their child(ren). That being said, many parents will readily agree that spanking a child should not be considered a form of child abuse. However, the question still stands: how far does the spanking have to go in order for it to be considered child abuse? Although some are convinced that there are better ways to discipline a child, there are others that maintain the idea that spanking is the best option for disciplinary action.
