Spanish Flu's Impact on Children's Education
Though initially there was no fear of this "Spanish influenza" during the summer months of this year, now it appears that it is quite a threat here in Southern California. Surgeon-General Rupert Blue of the Public Health Service who recently commented, "that the epidemic of 1893 which swept a large part of Europe and this country was caused by a very minute bacterium commonly called Pfeiffer bacillus" supported the origins of this questionably new influenza. Despite the fact that Spanish doctors are vehement in their denial that the disease, which we are aware has already taken its toll in our country and throughout the world, originated in Spain, a virulent strain of influenza is definitely here in Southern California. Either way, the disease was obviously brought to the United States by soldiers who have contracted influenza while battling the evil enemy.
Despite the origin of this influenza, our country's health is of the utmost concern because it is definitely worse than the "common cold," yet not as severe as other illnesses such as pneumonia and pleurisy. Influenza is characterized by rapid onset; an individual can be struck severely ill in the matter of a day if not hours. As well, this strain of influenza is distinguished by a high fever, reaching as high 104 degrees Fahrenheit. A victim will also typically experience headache, selective abdominal problems, as well as many other symptoms. Basically, this is not an illness that one would choose to contract.
The severity of this occurrence of influenza is most evident with our young folk who have become quite susceptible to this recent "epidemic." Yet, people of all ages, genders and social standings are prone to the illness. No one is safe, unlike the initial reports produced by the Board of Health, which suggested that Americans were impervious to the "Spanish influenza."
In fact, schools were closed for the first time in October as was reported by the Los Angeles Time on October 11: "At a special meeting this evening Pasadena Board of Education decided to close all of the public schools indefinitely beginning Tuesday morning. This includes the night High School as well as the day schools. Schools are closed as a precaution against influenza."
As reported yesterday, the schools were once again shut down due to the influenza.
The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 occurred during the midst of World War I, and it would claim more lives than the war itself. The disease erupted suddenly without a forewarning and spread rapidly across the globe. It seemed as though all of humanity had fallen under the mercy of this deadly illness. Influenza had very clear symptoms as described by William Collier in his letter to The Lancet. After a patient seizes their temperature can run up to 105° or more while their pulse averages at about 90 beats per minute. The high temperature and low pulse are frequently combined with epistaxis (nosebleed) and cyanosis (blueness of the skin). The epistaxis is caused by the high temperature and the cyanosis is caused by a lack of oxygen due to the decreased pulse (Kent 34). The author of Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919, Susan Kinglsey Kent, provides a brief history of the pandemic and documents from the time period. Many of the included documents show how unprepared and unorganized governments attempted to contain and control a disease they had never experienced, and how the expectations of the governments changed as a result of their successes and failures.
Kathryn Stockett's book The Help has sold over five million copies and has spent more than 100 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. Stockett's book has also been made in to a major motion picture. The Help is a story about African American house maids based in 1960's Jackson, Mississippi. The story is told by three main women, Minny, Aibileen and Skeeter. Aibileen and Minny are both African-American maids, while Skeeter is the daughter of a privileged family. Aibileen is raising another white child by the name of Mae Mobley whose mother does not participate in her care. Minny is working for an outcast, newlywed, white woman who is keeping her employment a secret from her husband. Skeeter is working on becoming a journalist and takes the risk of interviewing Minny and Aibileen for her book that she publishes. All meetings are done in secret. All of the maids Skeeter interviews talk of a woman named Hilly, who holds the ideal that whites are superior to African-Americans and intends to get everyone in her “ladies group” ( in which Skeeter is a member) to join in the ideal and embrace it. Hilly is one of the specific antagonists in this story, which ends in her demise. This story describes everyone in Hilly’s circle to a T, but it is published with an anonymous author and the names get changed so that no one can figure out who wrote it. Most people will “rant and rave” that Stockett's book is an amazing story of the struggle for African American's in
Bruce Wayne, Batman’s secret identity, is an American billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, and owner of Wayne Enterprises. Batman is one of the most well-known and well-liked superheroes of all time probably because of all of the comics, TV shows, movies and video games with him in it. Many are interested in Batman mainly because he is human, has no super powers and no special abilities just like a normal person but continues in many super human things using his gadgets, a body suit and a brilliant mind. Not only are these some of the differences between him and some other super heroes but he wants to see justice served and to defeat his enemies because he focuses on what is right and what is wrong. Batman has starred in about fourteen films both as a starring character and as an ensemble character beginning in 1943 and the latest in 2012 with two more coming in 2016 and 2017. Having earned a total of U.S. $1,900,844,295, the Batman series is the fifth-highest-grossing film series in North America. The first full-length movie of batman made in 1989 shows that to overcome great diversity one must step out of the bounds of what is socially and morally acceptable though the characterization of Batman, the contrast between
It has been eight years since Batman and Commissioner Gordon disappeared. Batman takes the blame for the death of Harvey Dent, he sacrifices his all for the world’s benefit. A cat burglar and a terrorist, named Bane, foil Batman’s plans, and force Batman out of exile and into a battle.
The third installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy starts eight years after The Dark Knight ends, while Batman is still struggling with the defeat he suffered at the hands of the Joker. Early on in The Dark Knight Rises, it is made clear that Bruce Wayne, the hero whom is better known as Batman, has hung up his cape and turned into a recluse. At a social event at the Wayne mansion, Gotham’s mayor, city commissioner, police chief, and other high profile officials are all seen remembering the anniversary of the death of the false hero Harvey Dent. As they pay tribute to Dent, they discuss how much Gotham’s crime problem has improved. They mention Gotham’s crime rates are at a record low, that the Batman is still being hunted for Dent’s murder, and that the Batman and Bruce Wayne have not been spotted in public for months. However, they see the Batman’s absence as a good thing. They all attribute the success of Gotham’s police force to the wave of action Dent’s death

...blish his action. Even though, Batman does his good activities in the city; the police force thinks differently about him. For example, there is a flying helicopter in search for him. In contrast, with this suit Batman goes along with the darkness as composting it with the dark. Furthermore, the background displays the elements of the city showing hes looking over, protecting the civilians. In other side of the city, everything looks broken down like an old record. Then, the other side of the city are filled with light that brighten the city colors. As Batman hides in the shadows waiting for time to come. Fighting crime at night not knowing where it takes place. The background describes the daily life of a superhero.
While the Batman character grown into an international franchise, many of his fellow superhero peers have fallen by the proverbial road side. Riding on his mysterious and dark persona, he is one of the most famous fictional characters of modern times. It is a unique blend of super-hero fantasy and realism that has allowed him to be accepted by such a wide audience, and it is to the credit of his producers that they have been able to mould the character the character to fit their needs while capitalizing on the character’s essence.
Matt Morris claims that "the story of Batman is a great cautionary tale concerning the price we risk paying if we are unable to keep things in balance". He cautions that we should not take Batman's "lessons to heart, and exercise as much care as we can not to let our work, and our service to the world, take away from us the most basic necessities of a good and happy life”. The Batman series is about Bruce Wayne, a billionaire playboy who, under the guise of a high-tech anthropomorphic bat, takes it on himself to protect the residents of Gotham City from the antagonistic forces which plague it. This is an enormous responsibility, one which comes with constants affronts to his physical and psychological well-being, as well as an inherent sense
In 27 B.C. The Roman Republic fell into disarray, in its wake, the great-nephew of Julius Caesar, Octavian. Later named Augustus when he became emperor, he would become the leader of the greatest empire ever built. This began the Pax Romana, the “Roman Peace”, and an empire was born. A period of turmoil and strife was being dissolved; peace and prosperity began to surge through the veins of Rome. Little did they know these veins would once again clot in the years ahead.
(Two week later) The governor and the whole city have a special party thanking Batman for saving the city once again. The governor stands up and taps his glass with a spoon and says, “I would like to make a toast to Batman and thank him for saving the city once again.” I don’t think anyone of us would be here today if it wasn’t for him, so I would like to thank him wherever he is I would also thank everyone for coming, and please everyone have a good time.”
The Dark Knight Rises (2012) is a superhero epic of a scope hard to explain in a few short paragraphs. It is the third film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. This film takes place over the course several months, primarily in the fictional Gotham City, an American city which had until recently been rife with crime and corruption which had made great progress in these areas due to the events in the previous films. The protagonist is Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), the eponymous Dark Knight, who has retired his Batman alter ego after taking the fall for the crimes of Harvey Dent at the close of The Dark Knight.

Bob Kane’s creation, Batman, made its debut in Detective Comics #27 1939. The character Batman was created during the Great Depression a time of urban expansion and violent crime. However through a plethora of renditions Batman was given a clear motivation in the late twentieth century when the character took a darker yet pragmatic turn. A key event in every depiction of Batman is the death of his parents. The death of his parents was always influential in the shaping of his character and inspiration of the creation of, Bruce Wayne’s alter ego, Batman. The death of his parents is also a traumatic event that enabled a positive growth in character. The moment with the most character growth id when Bruce’s parents’ murder is in on trial, and he must face the decision to kill the man with the gun he has in his pocket. That was the moment he decided to avenge his parents by protecting the innocent and preventing such horrendous act
The Pax Romana, or Roman Peace, was a time of great prosperity for all people under Rome’s rule. Roman citizens enjoyed the spectacles of the gladiators in the coliseum and the comedies performed at the many theatres. The Romans are attributed with the development of concrete, which enabled them to build large structures such as aqueducts. As Rome grew into the primary world leader, it’s Republican government was falling apart. The Senate was ineffective because it had no control of the vast armies that provided power. Conservative Romans who believed strongly in the Republic would immediately target a strong general who took sole control. Rome was in need of a solitary, powerful leader. Octavian skillfully turned himself into an emperor without suffering the fate of his great-uncle, Caesar. He controlled the army, and managed to please the masses. Once in the position of power, he changed the government not only to benefit himself, but also to benefit the Empire and ultimately the people. This structure was so strong, that it could survive through weak emperors such as Caligula and Nero and major problems like who the next emperor should be. Octavian was so influential that eventually the Romans did not care that they were no longer a Republic. They knew that with Octavian, they could become the greatest empire in...
