An early recorded version of slavery was the Spanish Encomienda System. To understand the encomienda system, one must understand Spain at the time. In 1492, Columbus “discovered” the New World, as an opportunity for Spain to make lots of money and spread Christianity. The Spanish easily took over much of Southern America, as many of the conquered did not have access to the military technology that the Spanish had, such as guns and horses. This system required Incans to work a certain amount yearly for the government and in return, they got protection. The Spanish took the idea from the Mit’a system and made it their own. Their new system is called the Encomienda system. The Encomienda system was a royal land charter from King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I that put natives at the disposal of the Encomendero, or a colonist who received a land grant. The Spanish Encomienda system had numerous short and long-term effects on the early colonies of the Americas, such as forcing a shift in the economy by putting the Americas into global trade routes and changing native culture, and in turn, killing off massive numbers of natives. As a result of the encomienda system, the Americas and natives had to change their economy. At the time, Spain had turned into a mercantilist government. This meant that their government believed wealth was measured by the amount of gold and silver controlled by the state.
