In the short story there are three traits. “My daddy said I was a different breed.” So in the story he doesn't fit in with the norm of society. He has done very bad things that are looked down upon , but he is truthful when it comes to telling about himself to his grandmother. That even though he isn't a good man he isn't the worst out there , he owned up to it which demonstrates being an outsider. Another trait that is demonstrated is disturbed personalities. “The grandmother couldn't name what the shirt reminded her of.” This is disturbing because she just seen Bailey with the exact same shirt on, and what more crazy is that the whole time when she was talking to The Misfit she did not once think about or say anything about her son and grandson John Wesley. Another trait is good vs evil. Flannery O’Connor dramatizes the struggle between good vs evil. The Misfit a convicted serial killer represents evil , while the Grandmother in her way , tries to embodys goodness. Prior to meeting The Misfit the Grandmother proved herself to be shallow and selfish and only death can bring out the goodness in her. The last trait is social class. The grandmother gives great importance to being a “ lady” , and her ideas about what that is old-fashioned, somewhat upper-crust south. She long for the good old to when children were polite and showed respect …show more content…
Feels superior to others. The conflict is person vs society because no one intentionally did anything to her for her to write those letters , she was just overly affected by every little thing they did. It was society she was against she “believed” she was protecting the town from evil. Another trait is disturbed personalities. “She thought of writing one more letter , to the head of the school board, asking how a teacher like Billy Moores could afford a new convertible.” Miss Strangeworth believes she has the right to say what she pleases. She has this pictured of her like she is some type god that can tell you what your going to do, which in reality she is just a normal women.she believed that she was doing no wrong only good which made her look like a bad person who is messing with people's lives. The last trait is social structure. Miss Strangeworth goal is to rid the town town of evil that is in the people that is living here. She has a very strict way of thinking and how she does things and if anybody does something outside of her normal than she believes that they are doing something
First, Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does. Miss Strangeworth is a very passionate person. She is very passionate about her grandfather, because he built the house Miss Strangeworth lives in, and also a large percentage of the town. In the story, she says this, “My grandfather built the first house on Pleasant Street”, she would
As a result, Miss Strangeworth’s character was analyzed by considering what she does in the book, what the narrator said about her, and how she interacted with other characters. Overall, we were able to realize that she is arrogant, outgoing, and also meddlesome. She displays each of these characteristics in more ways than one throughout the story.
The Grandmother is an elderly woman who believes she possesses all of the qualities to be a lady. However, she passes judgement on to others thinking only highly of herself. Ironically, the Grandmother’s own actions are the ones that lead to her encounter with the Misfit and consequently leads to the death of her family and herself. Moments leading up to her death the Misfit helps lead the Grandmother into realizing that she is not better than anyone else. Her true moment of clarity is stating that the Misfit is one of her own children. Grandmother stating this shows she does not see herself as someone who is better than the Misfit. Moments after this realization the Misfit murders the Grandmother. After murdering the Grandmother the Misfit states, “‘She would of been a good woman,’ The Misfit said, “if it had been somebody to shoot her every minute of her life’” (O’Connor 430). The Grandmother lived a life where she only revealed her true kindness in moments of death. In Good Country People Hulga is a thirty-year-old overweight woman with a disability who still lives with her mother. Hulga has a doctorate in philosophy which leads her to have a much different outlook on life than those around her. She does not believe in religion and believes that she knows all there is to know about life and that she has society figured out.
Strangeworth being evil, deceptive, and not thinking that she is doing evil things. The first example of the theme in the middle of the story happens when Mrs.Strangeworth sends an anonymous letter saying “EVER SEE AN IDIOT CHILD BEFORE? SOME PEOPLE JUST SHOULDN'T HAVE CHILDREN SHOULD THEY”. Mrs. Strangeworth sent this after earlier saying that she thought the child would be normal and healthy. This shows that she doesn’t show her true opinion to people, but she is happy to tell them later in a hateful letter mailed anonymously. Another example of theme in the middle of the story is when Miss.Strangeworth sends a letter to Mrs.Harper saying “HAVE YOU FOUND OUT YET WHAT THEY WERE ALL LAUGHING ABOUT AFTER YOU LEFT THE BRIDGE CLUB ON THURSDAY? OR IS THE WIFE REALLY ALWAYS THE LAST ONE TO KNOW?” After seeing this she might start to question what her friends and her husband are doing when she is not around them. After writing writing this letter she is happy with her good work and doesn’t care about the impact on the people that she writes to. These examples show that she is deceptive by making the people she talks to believe she thinks one thing but then sends them letters with a vastly different opinion. These examples show her being evil by displaying her willingness to tell people that she thinks their friends and family are
William Burke defines the bond between the Misfit and the grandmother by observing a “shared moral principle” (99). This moral principle is the belief that they deem themselves a good person, though, for entirely different reasons. As the family begins its trip, despite her initial objections, the grandmother is content with the ride (O’Connor 203). Her agreeable nature portrays her as being a kind old woman and therefore the good person she strives to be. Despite his criminal history, the Misfit is introduced as a considerate motorist, stopping to help the injured family and their damaged vehicle (208). Considering his reputation, had he truly been a man of evil, the family would have been in immediate danger, as opposed to just the point from when the grandmother recognized him. Upon the realization that the Misfit may, in fact, be no different than one of her own children, her subsequent murder reveals the Misfit’s own regrets about his misdeeds (O’Connor 212).

A painting known as American Gothic was painted in 1930 by Grant Wood. It portrays a farmer with pitchfork (Grant’s dentist) and a woman (Grant’s sister) in front of a house.
