South Korea (referred as Korea in the rest of writing) is often recognized as the country, where especially women are insane about perception of beauty and this recognition is often elaborated with the prominent number of plastic surgery compared with other countries. According to subjectivism and symbolic violence, Korea women are insane for beauty and even take plastic surgery because they think beauty is what normal women should possess and ugly women is uncompetitive or failure in the society. Subjectivism is sense of self and way of seeing self and others. Symbolic violence means the violence which is exercised upon a social agent with his or her complicity. (Bourdieu 1992: 167). So to applicate this theory to Korea, Korean people are insane to get plastic surgery to become pretty or to be look similar to western since people perceive "beauty" as what everyone should possess. However, the music video of "Miss Korea" by Lee Hyori claims that the insanity to be pretty is not desirable and needless. This assertion is powerful since the singer, Lee Hyori, is a sexy symbol in Korea and often recognized to female Koreans as a person who they want to be alike.

The storyline of music video , "Miss Korea" is that without wearing expensive bags such as Prada or Chanel, and without having plastic surgery, one is still beautiful and pretty enough to be "Miss Korea". The song contains lyrics such as " Will a designer bag make me shine? /Will I be able to do anything I want if I become pretty? / I don't want to hang on and cry over something so little"/Because I am Miss Korea. The Music video in this part shows lee hyo-ri wearing bag, which the sign of expensive b...

...are not the only or the most important reason that Koreans take plastic surgery. The real and the biggest reason behind the trend of plastic surgery in Korea is "self-satisfaction" or "satisfaction". People take plastic surgery not only because to pursue the "ideal beauty" that everyone recognize as beauty but because to find one's confidence and one's beauty. but Therefore, it would much better if Lee Hyo-ri added that common notion toward Korea's plastic surgery is wrong and there is much complicated reasoning behind why people take plastic surgery.

Approximately about a decade ago, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese women all had a distinctive look and features. Single eyelid, thin lips, short-bridged nose and oval shape face are few of the features that distinguish Asian women apart. However, these distinctive features are slowly fading away as the new westernized features are coming in. Through the mass media and their
In today society, beauty in a woman seems to be the measured of her size, or the structure of her nose and lips. Plastic surgery has become a popular procedure for people, mostly for women, to fit in social class, race, or beauty. Most women are insecure about their body or face, wondering if they are perfect enough for the society to call the beautiful; this is when cosmetic surgery comes in. To fix what “needed” to be fixed. To begin with, there is no point in cutting your face or your body to add or remove something most people call ugly. “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery” explored the desire of human to become beyond perfection by the undergoing plastic surgery. The author, Camille Pagalia, took a look how now days how Americans are so obsessed
One app called, “Plastic Quote” allows the user to upload photos and digitally augment their appearance through various types of online surgeries to achieve desired appearances. We then looked for American plastic surgery apps and also found quite a few which was quite shocking, but many of the apps were games and were significantly less serious than Korean ones, which have become incorporated into the process of getting plastic surgery. The apps differed significantly in appearance, modes of advertising, its capabilities and purpose. We also learned that there are many reality shows and perpetuations of cosmetic surgery and positive ideas attached to it, through Korean television shows and movies. We then are able to compare this with American’s depictions of plastic surgery, or lack thereof, through its own digital spaces, while also analyzing the difference in ideas that these representations are attached with. Through all of this, it became very clear that apps are not the driving factor in cosmetic surgery in South Korea. It is digital media in general, from a culture’s TV shows, digital advertisements, along with the apps that lead to an increasing income of this market by its simultaneously increasing
Today society has never been more aware of the impact the media has on what is considered to be an attractive person. Those who are most vulnerable by what they observe as the American standard of attractiveness and beauty are young females. Their quest to imitate such artificial images of beauty has challenged their health and their lives and has become the concern of many. As a result, advertisements used in the media are featuring more realistic looking people.

My research paper will explain the benefits of plastic surgery. People often have a lot of doubt when it comes to plastic surgery, but it can actually have many positive attributes, both physically and psychologically such as improving one’s health, lifestyle, and confidence
The phrase “Girls, Be Pretty!” is a common advertising phrase throughout Korea, because it is about creating beauty. Women’s interest in beauty is not just today’s issue. The issue is common anywhere and anytime. Women historically have shown interest in beauty even if it aches them with corsets, foot binding, and cosmetic surgery. To start with, ‘Corset’ which was popular in medieval Europe shows a desire for beauty.
K-Pop, J-Pop, C-Pop, you name it, are filled with male idols who are known to be in boy-bands, flashy with make-up, have fashionable clothing, and creating catchy dance moves. Although they are known to be manly in their native country, the West loves to fetishize these celebrities to be flamboyant, homosexual-like, and to be feminine. Most of course are androgynous, however that does not stop the media to strip their masculinity away. When is comes to stereotyping this kind of image, it also comes with fetishizing it as well; Xianh Nishi, formerly known as Max, is a Brazilian descendant who has gone under multiple cosmetic surgeries to look like a “Korean idol” (The Huffington Post, Simon McCormack).
Throughout history there have been many claims about what is beautiful and what is not on the face and body. America’s idea of beauty in the past changed many times from the fragileness of the Steel-engraving lady to the voluptuousness of the Greek slave. The ideal beauty in America is not so different from the ideal beauty of cultures around the world and follows many of the traditions practiced throughout history. The widespread of advertisement and technology is something that’s said to be the contributing problem to the ideal women phenomenon, but I believe history and trend plays the bigger role.
Image is everything in today’s society as women are increasingly putting more emphasis on their appearance. Women today are growing more conscious of how others perceive their outward appearance. Even in a relatively Oriental society like Singapore, it does not come as a surprise to see women going to Botox clinics during lunchtime hours to receive their dosage of Botox, a chemical used to paralyse certain muscles to prevent wrinkles. Furthermore, beauty advertisements nowadays feature women models that are barely out of their teens. Even with older models, they are usually models featuring in slimming centres or skin improvement advertisements.
The influence of present day mass media over the perception of beauty is increasing with the expanding industry of facial cosmetic production and the advancement in medical beauty enhancement. However, mass media advertisements appear to be predominantly dictated by "Western beauty" as they promote the desire for fair skin and "Occidental" facial features worldwide. In this paper, I will explore the consequential effects on Asian women as mass media continues to globally perpetuate the communities ' culturally and racially established perceptions of beauty.
According to The New Yorker, South Korea has the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita in the world (Chung, 2015). Seoul, South Korea is described as the World’s plastic-surgery capital. Many people who receive plastic surgery base their desired looks on Anime characters. Their looks in South Korea matter more then their inner aspects such as personality.
Although style and fashion vary widely, cross-cultural research has found a variety of commonalities in people's perception of beauty.
