South Korea has a republic form with the division of powers in the three -room Executive , Legislative and Judicial . Institute Executive South Korea led by the President as head of state and the Prime Minister as leader of government . However , the President has greater authority in state decision-making , domestic and foreign relations . The President has served during the past 5 years . South Korean elections use a system of popular vote and the last held in December 2012 by President Park Geun Hye as the winner .

In room Legislature , South Korea has the Unicameral National Assembly or Gukhoe selected once every 4 years and last held on 11 April 2012 . Assembly has 299 seats and is filled by representatives of several political parties . While the Judicial institutions , South Korea has the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Constitutional Court . South Korea itself has many political parties , according to South Korean Election Commission , political parties registered in 2012 by 8 parties . However, only two major parties dominate election results that the ruling party and the Democratic United Party Saenuri .

South Korean politics alone can not be separated from its relationship with North Korea . The Korean War ended by a truce in 1953 to date has not had a peace treaty . Thus , the two Koreas are still technically in a state of war . In connection with this condition , the two Koreas continued to increase its military strength of both weaponry and combat personnel . Both Korean implement conscription for all citizens , but in South Korea only for male citizens aged 20 years .

Currently South Korea was ranked seventh in the trading partner to the U.S. , and became the country with the 15th largest economy in the world ( U.S. Department of State Diplomacy , 2012) . Currently South Korea 's economy is undergoing a change from centrally -planned government investment directed into market oriented models . This is not apart from the emergence of the chaebol ( giants ) South Korea that control the world market , such as automobile brands Hyundai and Kia , as well as electronic products of Samsung and LG .

Currently South Korea is also developing its market to U.S. with KORUS FTA or Korea -US Free Trade Agreements agreed in 2011 and became the second largest FTA U.S. after NAFTA and the FTA South Korea's second largest after Korea - European Union FTA . This makes South Korea became one of the motor and the Asian tiger economies in East Asia .
