NORTH KOREA’S ORIGIN 2
Long before the Korean War occurred, the Korean peninsula had battled through a series of invasion attempts from the Chinese, Mongols, and the Japanese. Neither of these adversaries were successfully able to gain complete control over Korea. The first unsuccessful attempt by the Japanese occurred in 1592. Japan later attempted again at seizing control in 1598 but felt a similar result as their first attempt. During the 18th century, the Korean trade market had flourished with many other nations in commerce and trade. This was beneficial to the country of Korea in many ways because it set the stage bringing more

wealth into the country. Europeans first arrived in Korea in 1656 when a Dutch ship crashed and settled on the coast off Korea. In the 19th century, Koreans adopted a policy, which restricted them from trading any goods with all Westerners. This policy was successful early due to the Koreans responding back with swift military actions. In one instance, the French deployed a gunboat on the coast of Korea but Korean forces were able to defend their coastal lines. In 1871, the Korean republic burned a U.S. ship called the “General Sherman” which came to crash on the coast (“A Brief History of Korea” 2017). The aftermath from this affair led to the U.S. sending warships to react but the Koreans eventually defeated them. Due to Korean isolation, the country fell behind in most modern technology and industry.
Sometime after 1880 King Gojong attempted to change Korea’s isolation policy and reform the

3 country’s trade policy. During his attempt he introduced ‘eastern ethics and western technology’ to Korea but his measures were met with heavy resistance from conservative officials and common people. Korea’s isolation policy prevented any trading and until 1876, Japanese merchants were only the allowed to participate in trade with Korea. In the next 10 years afterwards, Korea begin to sign trade treaties with America, Britain, Germany, and Russia. The vast majority of Koreans were not pleased with these new trade policies. Due to frustration with new policy in 1882, Korean soldiers captured and killed a Japanese advisor. The country of Korea would now face serious consequences for these actions and sign a new treaty. China seized the opportunity to move their soldiers into Korean lands and occupy Korean territory. Overtime, Japan had eventually taken control over Korea through influence and war with China, which Japan easily won. In 1910, the Chosun Dynasty had ended with the annexation and colonization of Korea (“Liberty in North Korea”, 2017). Chinese influence and rule was now completely over and Japan remained sole control of the Korean peninsula. Koreans did attempt to rebel against the Japanese but they were easily defeated. In response to protests and peaceful demonstrations, many Koreans were arrested and killed. While Japan ruled over Korea, they influenced the entire existence of the Korean culture, society, and way of life. Korean culture began to die out as the Japanese influence and rule forced Koreans to confirm to Japanese cultures and values. Education was now formally being taught in Japanese, Korean language was forbidding from being spoken, and Koreans were being forced to NORTH KOREA’S ORIGIN 3 change their names to Japanese related names (“A Brief History of Korea” 2017). This led to some small reforms by the Japanese such as allowing Koreans to print newspapers and freedom to practice their religion. During WWII, many Koreans either volunteered or were forced to work in Japan. Due to heavy pressure and influence by Korean allies such as Russia and America, Korea gained a step closer towards their independence. In 1945, the Japanese rule over Korea was finally over as the allies forced Japan to surrender and Korea once again had its independence. During the Korean War, the United States and Russia had agreed that Korea was going be divided into two zones.
The United States would invade the south and Russian forces would take the north. Russian troops forced the Japanese army to surrender in September of 1945, which allowed American troops to enter the south. The country of Korea was now divided in half with a communist government in the north and in the south, a democratic government was established. Korea had now become two completely separate countries, the north was referred to as ‘North Korea’, and the south was referred to as ‘South Korea’. In an attempted to reunite the country and make the two completely again, North Korea invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. The ruler of North Korea Kim Il-sung attempted to unify Korea under his current rule using the military (“Liberty in North Korea”, 2017). The North Koreans were successful and quickly overthrew the South Korean army gaining control over South Korea’s capital ‘Seoul’. British and American forces arrived and were able to push North Korean forces back and gain control of over two-thirds of North Korea. The Chinese than intervened
on NORTH KOREA’S ORIGIN 4 the North Korean side and with an army of over 180,000 soldiers, they were able to force the South Korean allies back south to the halfway point of the country. The Korean War went back and forth with both sides counter-attacking the other and gaining the advantage. The war finally ended in a stalemate on 27 July 1953 and a cease-fire was signed by North Korea and South Korea. A border was created that still lasts today called the ‘38th parallel’. In present day, South Korea has flourished and become one of the wealthiest nations of the world. Although the Korean War was never officially ended and a cease-fire treaty is the only reason, the two sides have not engaged in any fighting. Since the halt of the war, South Korea has made remarkable accomplishments in rebuilding their infrastructure, government, and economy. South Korea’s capital of Seoul has been regarded as one of the best tourist attractions in the world by many travelers. South Korean technology has been regarded as being one of the best in the world. Trading has flourished to extreme highs between South Korea and all the leading powerhouse countries in the world. Not much is known about the advancement of North Korea and their economy. Since 1945, North Korea has isolated themselves from most of the world. Their infrastructure has suffered and seldom have they had any relations with any NATO nations. Today, North Koreans suffer from political aggression and a corrupt government. There have been reports that there is a drastic food shortage in North Korea and the vast amount of the population are suffering from starvation. Due to North Korea’s limited contact with the rest of the world and limited media coverage, no one has been able to prove this. NORTH KOREA’S ORIGIN 5 Initially the country of Korea started as a whole but overtime was divided in half due to the Korean War and the Americans occupying the south while Russians occupied the north (“A Brief History of Korea”, 2017). A political system for each region of Korea was adopted from the two superpowers that controlled them. After the cease-fire was initiated, South Korea rebuilt their lands, economy, and relations with the rest of the world. North Korea has become an isolated nation and has suffered from a corrupted political system. North Korea does not conduct trade or have any positive relations with non-communist nations. The North Korean foreign policy and isolation from NATO has prevented the stimulation of their economy and the advancement of their overall growth. When you compare South Korea and North Korea, they are literally the opposites of each other.
The Korean War began when the North Koreans invaded South Korea across the 38th parallel on June 25, 1950. The North Korean forces fought their way to Pusan at the southern edge of the Korean peninsula. With the North Koreans controlling most of the peninsula, General Douglas MacArthur landed an amphibious assault at Inchon on September 15, 1950 and wrested control of South Korea from North Korean forces. After MacArthur’s forces marched to the northern border of Korea, China entered the war. After a major Chinese attack and a major American counter attack, the front of the war had a new stage, the Chosin Reservoir (Henretta, Edwards & Self 768).
With the Industrial Revolution in full swing, Europe was looking to bolster their trade markets abroad. Thinking of it this way: in order to sell more goods, you need more places to sell them. So, with this thinking in mind, the Europeans said to themselves, 'What better place than Africa and Asia?' Along the same lines, colonies on these continents were seen as great places to get cheap, raw materials for Europe's factories. Add to this that Europe needed a place to house and employ their surplus population, and you can see why New Imperialism held the promise of economic growth.
The communist countries only recognized North Korea as Korea and decided just to forget about the south. The reason for this is because of the split, the South of Korea had become allies with the United States. Some part of Il Sung and the people who agreed with his ostensible ways still wanted South Korea to come forth in the communist era. (Lywellyn.) Not mainly because they regretted the split, part of the reason, but Il Sung wanted more people to be in control over. He thought that the U.S was just controlling South Korea, and he couldn’t get them back. So this led to his reasoning in wanting to invade South Korea and bring...
June 25, 1950 marked the day in which fighting between the North Koreans and South Koreans started. 135,000 North Korean troops crossed the border into South Korea while others attacked by sea. In several hours North Korea had successfully detained the South Korean city of Kaesong and in the next couple hours South Korea’s capital, Seoul, was under attack. Things were not looking good for Korea.
Koreans were under Japanese rule for a long time. It was officially signed as a colony on August 22, 1910, but Japanese had been planning this annexation from 1876 the Japanese-Korea treaty of amity. Japanese plan of annexation started with this treaty. This treaty allowed Japanese to come to Korean harbors freely and this marked the end of Korea’s status as a protectorate of China. Also later on October 8th, 1895, Japanese minister Miura Goro plotted the assassination of Empress Myeongseong. With the assassination, Japanese were able to control the economy and military power and made the Koreans sig...
Within less than a decade, the Korean immigrants found themselves in danger of losing their homeland to Japan. This would mean that they wouldn’t have their own country to go back to. In 1910, the Japanese took over Korea. That’s when many Korean immigrants started to get involved in the Korean independence movement. After nine years of Japanese Annexation of Korea in 1910, around 540 students were admitted for study at American schools.
The first military conflict, Russia Prime Minister Stalin and the United States President Truman join together in force, forcing Japan out of Korea. In this conflict, if Russia and the United States defeat Japan. The two superpowers will split the Country of Korea, the North will be govern by Communist Russia and China. The South Govern by The Free Nation, United States. After Russia and the U.S.A left out of North and South Korea. The north invaded the south model after the United States. North Korea model as communist Russia and china. Not until the North took over the Seoul South Korea, then did the United States provide military relief. Over 30,000 American lives were lost on a political move.
Korea gained independence from Japanese colonial rule in August of 1945 and also the division of Korea into the republic south and communist north in the 38th parallel. South Korea then was under the United States occupation from l945-48. Before the United States occupation South Korea had already organized a central People’s committees and established the Korean People of Republic (Memorial Foundation). Nevertheless, United States did not recognize any of the provisional or republic government. The United States refused to do so until there had been an agreement among the western allies. In 1954, there was a Mutual Security Agreement signed between the United States and South Korea, which states that they agreed to defend each other in the event of outside aggression (Memorial Foundation). South Korea has been under military authoritarian regime from 1961-1979 under President Park Chung Hee and from 1980-1992 under President Chun Doo Hwan. The Kwangju uprising occurred in May of 1980 after the collapse of the first milit...
Legend states that in 2333 BCE, Tan'gun, grandson of the Creator, established the kingdom of Choson, or “Morning Freshness”, and thus the Korean people were began. Surrounded on three sides by Russia, China, and Japan, the Korean people have had to endure hundreds of attempts at invasion and domination, including four hundred years of Chinese military rule over the kingdom of Choson, Mongol invasions during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and, most recently, Japanese Colonization from 1910 to 1945. (Soh, 2006) This has caused the people of Korea to adapt parts of other cultures while still maintaining a strong cultural identity of their own.
The relations between and Korea and Japan has a long history. The first exchange of goods and information between the two goes back to the era of Three Countries and since then the relations between the two developed both in good and bad ways until now.
Throughout history the United States has fought in many wars. Whether the fighting took place in Europe such as WWI or in our own land like the civil war. The one war many people seem to forget is the Korean War. The Korean War also known as the “forgotten war” was a war between North Korea, South Korea and the US together with the South Koreans to help. The Korean War was fought on sea, land, and in the air over and near the Korean peninsula (Brown, p.2). On June 25, 1950, the North Koreans rumbled across the thirty-eighth parallel. The invasion was successful because the south was not expecting or even prepare for a war. The invasion was so successful that they pushed the south to a tiny defensive area around Pusan. That’s when President Truman steps in real quick to halt the invasion of the North Koreans. Truman ordered American armed forces under General Douglas MacArthur to support South Korea. The Korean War was a clash between Communist forces and Free World (Brown, p.2).
...y say that I was able to get a good overview of Korean history with a strong sense of knowledge gained. What I specifically gained was a better sense of Korea as a unique cultural entity with its own sense of excellence and its individuality. I have also learned that regardless of the hardships Koreans have suffered in this century, they have successfully endured every worst situation a nation can ever experience. From Japan's colonial rule to the heavy influence Korea felt from Russia's communist state and America's democracy, Korea was able to withstand all these instabilities and overcome to what may be a healthy and modernized nation. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like a broad yet thorough overview of Korean history because; this book is precisely written and sectioned accordingly to not make learning history difficult or confusing.
The award winning film, Chungking Express, is a tale of two stories told in sequence, each about a lovesick Hong Kong policeman contemplating his relationship with a woman. The movie is filmed in impressionistic splashes of motion and color, which are used to help the audience get a better sense of the time period. In particular, the mise-en-scene, especially the setting, stands out in separating the different stages of relationships that the two policemen find themselves in, but due to the setting being in the same place it also helps connect the two stories. The first story concerns Taiwan-born cop He Qiwu, also known as Cop 223. Qiwu's girlfriend May broke up with him on April 1 (April Fool's Day).
Previously, Korea had been a tributary of China; however, Japan saw the potential economic benefits of the peninsula. Korea was agriculturally rich and its coal and iron ore could be used for Japan’s growing industry. In 1876, after several confrontations between the Koreans and Japanese, Japan forced Korea to open up to Japanese trade under the Japan-Korea Treaty. Furthermore, the events of First and Second Opium Wars had exposed China’s weakness. Japan decided to seize the Korean Peninsula as tensions ran high.
Singapore as a country has had various transformations throughout its history, however the period 1950 and 1970 was quite critical. Much of these changes had a lot to do with the development of trade and manufacturing. This is without forgetting the financial sector where the intention was to come up with a financial hub that could be used in economic development. Looking at the case of Singapore, we would say that it is a productive economy with a very high market competition. This observation has been further clarified by the Swiss International Institute for Management Development, going with their report that they released in the year 2001 (Chellaraj & Mattoo, 2009). In this study, we intend to evaluate the case of political economy of development in Singapore and examine the tensions between the state and various economic institutions. In additions to examining this institution, we would also like to examine how these variables have contributed towards the attainment of favorable growth rates and economic prosperity.
