"There is immutable conflict at work in life and in business, a constant battle between peace and chaos. Neither can be mastered, but both can be influenced. How you go about it is the key to success" (Phillip Night 20th century businessman) A team, theoretically, should work like a well-oiled machine. Like a state of the art machine most enlightened people should be able to function peacefully for the stated purpose of geting the job done. However, oil can be forgotten, a scheduled maintenance item missed, and the machine slows or stops altogether. The same happens in a team. If one person is upset with another person, something gets lost or undone; progress and productivity will slow or disintegrate to nothing creating chaos or conflict. Resolving this conflict is paramount, and should take into consideration the ideas and philosophies of the members of the team, thereby moving forward with the common goal of peace.. Resolution occurs when sources are identified, choices in how we respond are made, and by instituting and recognizing preventative measures.
When dealing with conflict it is important to have a global understanding of the sources of conflict. These sources include perceptions, miscommunication, and irrational beliefs.
In our daily lives we often formulate perceptions based on how someone is dressed, does their hair, the car they drive or the street upon which they live. These assumed perceptions range from their socioeconomic position to how they may or may not perform in job or on a team. These perceptions are dangerous to act upon, as each person is an individual despite their outward projections. We all know the age-old adage about assumptions as well as “don’t judge a book by its cover”. Often people DO perform despite their situations or outward appearances.
It is equally dangerous to formulate perceptions based on cultural perspectives. It is true that certain cultures do have some universal truths in general. However, these do not always apply to individuals, and the degree to which these cultural influences are present will vary widely from person to person. In the dynamic of a learning team, it is important to remember that each member is striving towards the same goal of obtaining a degree. Since each members schedule is different, the team may change from time to time. Being flexible, suspending perceptions and judgments, will allow the team to adjust and avoid many conflicts. Make sure to encourage new team members to share their strengths and weaknesses. Also share with them the strengths and weaknesses of the team. Any conflicts that have occurred in the past should also be reviewed to ensure that new members are on board with the resolution tactics that are being utilized. Be open to new ideas.
Conflict is rarely something anyone enjoys. By applying some simple thought to conflict and conscience effort to seek resolution, conflict can be survived and new growth can be generated from it.

Tuckman and Jensen developed a model for how teams should develop that includes five stages: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning (as cited in Martin ,2006 and Fulk, Bell,& Bodie ,2011). In Genesis, God interacts with Adam by speaking to him face to face. Whether God was giving out instructions or punishment to Adam and Eve, he was always doing it to their faces. This close relationship is shown even when humans do something wrong. The only rule that God gives to Adam is that he must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve go on to break this singular rule and be punished. God even discovers Adam and Eves betrayal when he is in human form. Equiano’s first experience with slavery was in his very own land of Africa. He was forceful taken on a journey from Central to West Africa. This was Equiano’s first time being forced away from his family, chained, and deprived of food. Little did he know that life as a slave in Africa would be one of the most comfortable times of his life in comparison to slavery in Europe and the Americas. People work in groups or teams everyday whether in their career, education, political organization, church, or any other social setting. Conflict while working in teams or groups is inevitable. When taking people of different backgrounds, personalities, moral, and ethical beliefs and putting them together in a group, conflict will arise. The key to achieving your team goals is to construct and conquer your goals with keeping the greater good of the team in mind. As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure." The dynamics of a team can be very diverse. Sometimes that's good and sometimes it's bad. It is so important to extinguish all issues from the very beginning because otherwise they lie buried and slowly build into something that is blown out of proportion. As of today, many people aren’t lucky enough to make it past high school. I personally know multiple people who have died due to accidents, to natural causes and to violence/war. God has a plan for everyone. But some people believe otherwise. Matisyahu believes that he is alive for a reason and that is to make peace on earth. But as he starts to sing the next verse, “All my life I 've been waiting for/I 've been praying for/For the people to say/That we don 't wanna fight no more/There will be no more wars/And our children will play/One day/One day/One day” (Matisyahu). Listening to this song, you can conclude that he has a hope to end the violence because something does need to be done. It should not be pushed away anymore. As years go by, parents are afraid for their kids and for the next generations because they don’t know what is to come. A couple of years ago, a man entered Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut killing twenty-two children and seven adults there. No one is sure why he did this. Rousseau claims that the general will is correct only if certain requirements are met, yet Rousseau affirms that general will is always correct. The general will is always correct because it is the will of all of the congregated people. The will of the people are the generators of what brings about rules. In Chapter XII of Book III, Rousseau explains the establishment of sovereign authority. Rousseau elaborates that "the sovereign, having no other force than legislative power, acts only through the laws. And since the laws are only authentic acts of the general will, the sovereign can act only when the populace is assembled” (Rousseau 215). This passage exemplifies the fact that laws can only be put in place if all of the people of society are assembled. Additionally, the laws are acts of the general will; the citizen’s opinions of what decisions actively pursue the common good. Nonetheless in Rousseau’s ideal society, the common good is the most important ideal for every citizen, so, inevitably, the particular wills of all support the general will. Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that takes place with the use of any electronic technology. Cyberbullying is a major problem affecting young people today. There are different types of cyberbullying. This topic comes as an interest to many people these days because bullying is very common and it can ruin a person’s life. These days, cyberbullying is considered a new form of bullying. It can happen over the internet by computer, mobile phone or any other electronic devices. Cyberbullying could involve any form of unpleasant words or pictures being displayed on the internet for others to see. It could also involve the spreading of lies about the victim on the internet. Many people are stepping up efforts to prevent bullying in the first place. Approximately half of U.S. students are impacted by traditional bullying each school day (Ross). Bullying peaks in middle school, then reduces in high school. Other types of bullying may involve the passing of notes behind someone’s back, rumors being whispered about someone, or being threatened in the internet. The most common types of cyberbullying include passing of humiliating photos, cell phone pranks, cyber stalking, impersonation, online slam books, and text wars. Bullies appear scary but truthfully they are the unhappy ones. Majority of bullies have been bullied by parents, siblings, or other young people. This may trigger them to bully and pick on other kids.
According to McShane and Von Glinow, conflict is “a process in which one party perceives that his or her interests are being opposed or negatively affected by another party” (328). The Conflict Process Model begins with the different sources of conflict; these sources lead one or more parties to perceive that a conflict exists. These perceptions interact with emotions and manifest themselves in the behavior towards other parties. The arrows in the figure illustrate the series of conflict episodes that cycle into conflict escalation (McShane and Von Glinow 331-332).
