sources have been indicated as contributing to the phosphorus levels in Lake Carmi, as well as the continuing pollution. These other sources include the septic tanks of the over 300 shoreline properties, reduced and/or diminished buffer zones between roadways and fields near the shorelines of the lake, as well as the eroding ditches and culverts which deliver sediment to the lake.
During the late summer and fall of 2017, uproar throughout the town of Franklin has led to multiple legislature meetings, proposed plans and bills to address the lakes current condition and continuing pollution. Although there is evidence of multiple sources of pollution, local farmland runoff has been deemed the main pollution source and has taken center stage.
For years residence have been advocating for “stricter state regulation of agricultural operations.”5 The residents near to Lake Carmi assign the high levels of phosphate in the lake to the nearby farmers who spread phosphorus-rich manure on the fields in the watershed. These residence also indicated the lax regulation of dairy farms in Vermont as allowing for the continuation of pollution in the lake. Following these accusations, secretary of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets, Anson Tebbetts rejected this idea, stated the farmers are committed to doing the right thing and are already heavily regulated under other state laws and rules. Many residence feel strongly Vermont’s Act 250 exempts farms from rules that other businesses are bound by. In an article published by Seven Days, these farms have been indicated as generating “85 percent of the phosphorous pollution in Lake Carmi, according to a 2009 Vermont Agency of Natural Resources study, and have contributed to algae blooms dating back to 1976.”6 Most recently, a local farmer was granted $60,000 from the Federal clean water funding to empty one of their ponds, scrape manure-saturated sludge from the bottom and spread the material on an adjacent field. This project was the result of years of surrounding residence indicating runoff from this pond into a stream feeding the lake. State officials later acknowledged that tests of the water from Lake Carmi suggested high levels of phosphorus were running from the manure-saturated pond via a stream into the lake. This incident provided evidence for Vermont’s lax agricultural regulations, as well as indicating former agriculture operations, were no rules existed, as presenting future and present environmental problems. Many residence were upset with the event, especial with the failure to levy fines, considering the years of negotiation before the farmer agreed to permit the process, as well as the use of public tax dollars to fund the cleanup. Concerned community members, specifically those who live on the shoreline, voiced concern for the condition of the lake reducing property value, especially when paying this year’s taxes; “80 of the town’s homeowners let their displeasure be known when they paid taxes on land around the lake that they believe is now overvalued ‘because they’re not getting the full benefit of their properties’ as a result of the pollution.”7 Concerns for health have also been raised due to the foul smell, and the recent ban on swimming during the late summer and fall of 2017 by the state who also advised residents not to touch the water. The owner of one of the 200 or so lakeshore properties, Dick Benton, stated in an article published by Seven Days, “‘it’s killing us. I’ve been on the lake since 1970, and this is the first year I’ve ever seen it this bad’.”8 With a history of the presence of cyanobacteria recorded back in 1976, the water quality in Lake Carmi have been monitored by the Vermont Lay and Spring Phosphorus Monitoring Programs since 1980. The measurements, taken from the center of the lake, from these two programs have provided evidence of improving summertime water quality, however “watershed residents indicate that the quality of waters in the lake margins has declined

The Flint water crisis would be one of the most critical things today in michigan. It’s critical for young children not to get lead exposure they should be screened from the lead and lead levels in children's bodies as well. (National Center for Healthy Housing) The water needs to be treated with which it will increase the corrosiveness and potentially further erode any lead piping. (Duke) The People in Flint are a facing with not be able to drink water, and shower. All of these things that happened are critical factors of what is happening in the Flint water crisis today. This is an important topic. It affects the overall health of the population surrounding the Chesapeake Bay, as we eat from it quite often and it can be used as a water source. The chemicals being released into the water are from coal-burning factories and runoff, which can be helped, but it’s almost impractical in this day and age to spend the amount of money required to do so without the technology that can guarantee a fix.
As global temperatures and ocean levels rise, the water levels of the Great Lakes continues to fall. As the lakes hit their all time lowest level in global history in 2012, society remains ignorant to the imposing doom that lurks ahead. Since the Great Lakes make up the largest group of fresh water lakes on Earth and are responsible for approximately 21% of the Earth’s fresh water supply, this issue is becoming one of the largest environmental and economical issues our modern world faces. The effects of this issue include destroying animal habitats and a major economic market; shipping. Water levels in the Great Lakes have been dropping for the past fourteen years, but it wasn’t until boats were scraping the bottom of Lake Huron that people began to take notice. This terrible environmental issue has been dubbed a long term cycle of over evaporation and not enough precipitation to replenish the Lakes. Keith Kompoltowicz, chief of watershed hydrology for the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Detroit has been monitoring this issue for a decade and has made startling discoveries, such as in 2012, he discovered Lake Michigan and Lake Huron’s water levels only rose four inches after winter, whereas the Lakes have been regularly recorded as gaining a foot of water after the winter season had ended. This amount of water added is not enough to maintain a proper water level during the dry, hot summer seasons that evaporate much water from the Great Lakes. While some scientists say that this is just a cycle that will adjust itself naturally, most experts that have been studying this phenomenon, such as Kompoltwicz, would agree that the issue has gone to far
Lumbering and mining for iron and graphite go on in this area and it was once a place for major industry. Unfortunately, this is an area where acid rain has become a regular part of the water that flows through it.In recent years, acid rain hasn't really been in the news because people have felt that the problem has been taken care of so, therefore, it's not around anymore. However there has been no evidence that the acidification of lakes in the Northeastern U.S. has stopped or even slowed down. The analysis of sediments from lakes in the Adirondacks has shown that acidity started rising in the 1930's and 40's and has been rising steadily ever since. There are two possible reasons for this.

... the residual effects of pollution left behind by both mining in the Chesapeake Bay area around rivers, such as the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania, that feed into the Chesapeake Bay. Lutz also had quoted John Dawes, now the executive director of the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds, on the damage done to streams and to the aquatic life in the streams. Dawes told Lutz "'we're looking at 4,600 miles of dead streams in Pennsylvania'" in reference to the vitality in polluted regions. This can occur in several ways but the two generally accepted causes are the toxicity levels in the water are too high to support life and the contaminated water is slowly killing off members of the food chains for the aquatic life. In either theory, the death of fish and their food chain caused by AMD is impacting the billion dollar fishing industry that calls Chesapeake Bay home.
'Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or lives(in) it. ' (Azeem 1). In Canada, most people live in the southern part along with many agricultural and industrial activities causing the worst cases of water pollution. Water pollution is caused by population growth and industrialization, but can be prevented if proper controls are taken into consideration to help reduce the discharge of waste materials. Water pollution has been a huge disadvantaging concern for humans as well as wildlife for over many decades, but can actually be prevented if attempted. Preventing waste materials from being dumped into lakes and rivers, controlling

The lake receives all of the storm runoff water from the land around it which is what causes the lake to be overrun with phosphorus. Phosphorus is actually considered a nutrient for the lake and is essential for the survival of a lot of the lake’s plant life. However, too much of the element impacts the biodiversity of the lake: there is a large increase in algae, which in turn, affects the rest of the life in the lake. Winnipesaukee Gateway lists more effects: decrease in water clarity, increased chlorophyll-a, increased cloudiness of the water, and decreased oxygen
Then the documentary tackles Puget Sound. The Duwamish River is the largest hot spot in the nation. In 2001, the Duwamish River was classified as a “Super Fund” site. This is given to a site that will receive federal assistance for clean up. But yet, it may be too late. Puget Sound in contaminated with PCP, lead and mercury. The threat comes from the giant industrial polluters of old and from chemicals in consumers’ face creams, deodorants, prescription medicines and household cleaners that find their way into sewers, storm drains, eventually into America’s waterways and drinking water.
