In the film The Dark Knight there is a similar organization in the sound. In this soundtrack there is a use of electronic and instrumental sounds that create complex layers throughout the song. The music in some of these piece were all played in the same tone, but because of the different rhythms and motives it gave the music a fuller more complex feeling. There were different sections that overlapped at the same time. When this happened it gave the sound a more tonal feel. This really connected to the film because it was an action drama that had many moments of chaos or action scenes. These types of scenes require sound that is driving and multi layered. This helps the audience connect the different events in the film to the different layers in the music.

During this time the music had a doo-wop feel and included folksingers. There was also an inspiration from the Motown sound and rock. These types of music was catered to the hippie culture, which is a large aspect to the plot of this film. The main instruments that were used in this soundtrack are the drum set, vocals, saxophone, and electric guitar. These are all very important parts in creating the setting and time period for the movie. There are strong melodies that allow for harmonic phrasing between the vocals and instrumental parts of the music. Throughout this soundtrack there are repeated rhythms that allow the audience to understand the format of the music. A scene where this occurs strongly is when the song “With a little help from my friends” is sung. When this is happening two characters are partying all night in the streets of NY. The sound effects grabbed my attention and continued to make me yearn for what could come next. The sounds bring me to a place where I can’t help but believe in the situation that’s happening. The music heightens my mood and helps create illusion. For example, the first extraordinary sound technique I noticed that the filmmaker used was the echo effect. It was not only used to support the mood the characters were at, but also to express that idea of the ‘emptiness’ in them. This technique dominated the audio when I was taken to a story in the film of a boy who was 18 and poisoned by his own sister. For this essay I will be looking at the work of Hans Zimmer to discuss how music in film engages the viewer and evokes emotion and pulls the viewer toward the film. Hans Zimmer is a German born music composer. Hans Zimmer’s love of music stems from his childhood when he learned how to play various instruments. Before Zimmer began composing music for films he was in a well-known band. The band was called The Buggles whom were famous for their song Video Killed the Radio Star. After the Buggles Zimmer played in other bands but never had another hit. As Zimmer has progressed as a film composer so has his list of nominations and awards. Zimmer has won 4 Grammy Awards and 2 Golden Globes and many more for his outstanding film scores. The reason I chose to write this essay on Zimmer was that his genres and music score are extremely versatile ranging from animations to comedy to dark thrillers. This is important to highlight as it shows Zimmer can create almost any atmosphere with his music whether it be sad or creating tension that all cause us to engage with the film. Zimmer's use of themes and introduction of different instruments allowed him to create these wonderful engaging film score. In this essay I will look at three films by Hans Zimmer these are The Holiday Rush and Rain Man.

In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. I would also like to discover how the soundtrack guides the audience’s attention with the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds.
“Apocalypse Now” is a legendary war film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film’s main theme is devastation, violence, and horror. In this film Coppola thoroughly scrutinized the main characters ideas, behavior, and emotions to depict the darkness and the horror of war. His goal was to make the audience part of the horror. He wanted the audience to have a tremendous impact on this film and he succeeded with the perfect use of sound and editing in the ending sequence of his film. I will demonstrate how Coppola exploits a wide array of sound and editing to create suspense, intensity, and anxiety in the sequence to affect the audience’s emotions, using diegetic ambient sound effects, non-diegetic music, voice over and four editing types.
In the final chapter of Global Soundtracks, Mark Slobin writes about his two means of analyzing film music one of which is called a “narrative knot”. When breaking down a film, the music that is chosen can enhance the scene to which it was placed. The way composers and directors work together in producing scenes of a film can make an impact on future films. This is where Mark Slobin’s term “narrative knot” comes in. A “narrative knot” is used to describe when the visual and audio or audio and plot are brought together nicely and are used in many types of media. Sound plays a significant part in all movies and one of the most interesting of all the sound techniques would be the use of nondiegetic music. In the movie Apocalypse Now, there is a double disc soundtrack with thirty tracks on it. The one song on there that has the most meaning would The Doors song “The End”. This song not only set the mood for the scene waiting in Saigon and the move as a whole but is also used to foreshadow the death of Coronal Kurtis. Mr. Coppola, the director of the film, was a genius for picking this song to represent the movie. It not only fits the movie with the sounds of helicopter but the words alone have significant meaning to the movie. Along with it serving as a premise for the movie, Mr. Coppola plays with the viewer’s perception of diegetic sounds and nondiegetic music.
Sound is what brings movies to life, but, not many viewers really notice. A film can be shot with mediocre quality, but, can be intriguing if it has the most effective foley, sound effects, underscore, etc. Sound in movies band together and unfold the meaning of the scenes. When actors are speaking, the dialogue can bring emotion to the audience, or, it can be used as the ambient sound. Music is one of the main things to have when filmmaking. The importance of music in movies is highly regarded for manipulating the viewer’s emotions and helping them immerse into the story. Music is one of the prime elements in cinema. Without it a movie would feel dull and unexciting. There are three elements in a movie: one is acting, the second is picture, and the third one is music. It is a holy trinity; if incomplete, there would be a lack of sensation and excitement. Both acting and picture can stand independently from one another, but music is the one that makes the movie memorable.
