Sophomore year in high school is very important time period of my life, because it is appropriate age to start thinking about your future and set your goals. It is also the right time to experience different things to get more clear idea of what you want to do in the future. Goals have to be followed by specific plans and steps. This year, I am hoping to get more clear ideas on the career that I want to get in the future, which is stage management. Experiencing different things in the field you want to work in is important. Walter Kirn successfully unearths some of the worst aspects of senior year. However, these reasonings are not sound enough to condone the discontinuation of it. Any issues found are the fault of the student or the school administration, not the grade level itself. Senior year is worth holding on to for both the persistence of learning and for solidifying relationships. Kirn mentions with pleasure his choice to leave high school early. Everyday should be a continuous journey to get to your goal. Starting off with the right step is a major component. Therefore, I chose to apply to Stanly Early College High. I believe that I have the ability to work up to Stanly Early College standards. Determination, dedication, and desire are all qualities that I have.
My Senior year in High School has officially begun, only one more year at Corona High. I know that Senior year is supposed to be fun, but I believe every year is an opportunity to improve. I have already set my goals for this school year. I believe I can achieve a GPA of 4.0 or above. However, there are some personal goals that I need to complete first. I need to stop my terrible habit of procrastinating. Another goal of mine is to pass my AP tests so I can earn college credit. I also want to learn new things, so I started to learn the basics of Coding, now I need to finish this course. These are some things I look to accomplish this year.
As Junior year is regarded as your most important year while taking exams such as SAT, ACT, SBAC and AP test. Junior year to me felt very similiar to my Sophomore year in high school, as I still meet new people and friends from sports and got closer to many new teachers. Theatre has always been a topic of interest in my life. I would watch movies and be more intrigued by character choices, make-up, costumes, and background instead of the actual movie itself. I would find myself thinking of things I would have done different in a film, especially films that were based off of books. So, in the 5th grade, at Handley Elementary, I made the decision to enter SASA middle school in the Theatre concentration. I really liked Theatre, but I eventually grew tired of being on stage. I enjoyed things like critiquing monologue pieces, building sets, being part of the stage crew, and analyzing scripts more than actually performing. In the 10th grade, I was assigned to be the assistant director of a play entitled “The Rope Swing”, which was part of the fall production at SASA in 2012. Since then, I have assistant directed three shows and I’ve fallen in love with directing.
Senior year can mean many things to everyone, but to me it is about my last ten football games, senior project and, graduating.
Theatre has been a gigantic part of my extracurricular life. Over the past ten years, I have been in over 15 productions with Western Alamance High Theatre and local community theaters, such as Alamance Children's Theatre, or Studio One, both located in Burlington, North Carolina. Not only have I worked in the acting side of theatre, but I have also stage managed and done tech work for over seven shows. Whether it is making costumes, building sets, or creating light and sound cues, I am always diligent and effective with whatever task I am faced with. My hope is to continue theatre after I graduate high school. My interest in theater dates back to high school where I excelled in technical theater design. My senior I was student technical director and sound engineer for all of our productions and school events. It only seemed logical to continue my studies at Cypress College enrolling by their technical theater program. I surveyed all the different technical fields, but quickly gravitated towards sound.
Then, there is technical theatre. This area of theatre is my favorite and the goal for my future. Technicians are the ones who create the world for the actors or somehow manage everything behind the scenes. Before I explain the multiple fields and areas of technical theatre, I must stress how important this side of theatre is overall. When it comes down to getting a degree in technical theatre or pursuing it, people tend to view it as a purely practical occupation and experience based. When I was young, I never wanted to make mistakes, as I would feel bad for doing something wrong. Going back to the quote, one can tell I never tried anything new. I strived to do my best but as time progressed, I felt I was not doing my best. In my freshman year of high school, I wanted to do more, but there was the constant fear of messing something up if I tried something new. People keep telling me to do something new and interesting so I can add it to my résumé. All I had ever focused on was school. Theater is a complex and multi-faceted organism. In order for a play to work properly it requires that many people create, preform, and interact make a play to come to life. This class dealt with many of the crucial supporting players in theater production the set designer, the lighting designer, and the costume designer, as well as touching upon many other important roles. By having the members of the class preform these roles allowed them to understand and gain grounding in the necessary skills for these positions as well as other relevant skills.
