College. The biggest change in your life; the place where you can experience new things, discover who you really are, and fit into the new lifestyle. In “Sophomore Switch” Emily and Tasha had to discover those things when they switch colleges. Natasha Collins went to the University of California, Santa Barbara and switched to go to Oxford University. The reason why she left was because of an incident in her home town. There was a picture online of her drunk and half naked with her boyfriend tyler in a bathtub. Meanwhile, Emily changed colleges from Oxford to Santa Barbara because of a broken heart and wanted a new life but couldn't quite fit in. Both young adults were having trouble fitting in so they decided to communicate with each other and for tips on how to fit in, find new lovers, and also find themselves. Emily and Tasha and I are alike in many ways. We all share the the same view of the world, we are viewed by the world in similar ways and I would respond in a comparable way to the central conflict of the novel. Therefore i believe given the chance we all could be friends. Both Tasha and Emily view their world as fake …show more content…
and stuck up. Emily was talking to a guy that she thought liked her. He was really sweet to her and showed her that he really liked her. She decided to go to a college party that she was invited to by her roommate Morgan. But, after a couple drinks and waking up, she found out that he was using her for a website to rate her sexual activity. On the other hand, Tasha was invited to a Ball with her friend Holly. She tries to fit in as much as she can by communicating with everybody but she found out they were talking about her. Tasha: “What's with all the stuck up girls here.” Emily: “You just act superior and fake as if you know all of their intellectual crap. Everybody’s pretending in the end” (page #). I view the world the same way. The world is a big stage. People have to act a certain way to make people happy. But sometimes it isn't enough. People are still going to have something to say about you that beneficial to them. I relate to Emily because trying to fit into somthing isnt easy when you're in a new environment. They both are trying to fit into the new colleges and i am going through the same thing because i'm going off to college and i'm going to need to find a way to it in. they both had support into doing so and my support is going to be my my friends that been in college and experienced what it's like to be in a different and bigger school. The world views the two young ladies as quiet outsiders and they don’t belong there. The main reason why they can't fit in with the crowd is because they are quiet and also ashamed. Emily had a boyfriend back in Oxford but he broke her heart because she was afraid of intimacy. As she tried to move on to another guy she was afraid to because she still had feelings for her ex boyfriend. She also an outsider because she’s from England and she has a heavy accent surrounded by americans. Tasha is also considered quiet because when she heard people talking about her she didn't say anything to them. She also felt ashamed at the Ball because she was trying to listen to what the girls had to say but then she accidently bumped into a tray full of drinks and spilled it all over herself. “What is with them all being so…” “Slutty?” “i was going to be more tactful.” More laughter. I shrink back. This was a mistake, i know. I already feel like the trashy outsider without hearing it spelled out by a group of snotty girls. The world views me also as a quiet girl. I don't say much to people if i don't know them. i’m the type of person to open up more once you get to know me then you can't shut me up. I stay isolated and sit back and observe other things. The more i sit back the more i find out what happens around me. People may talk about me but i never say anything back. I don’t entertain them because the more i do the more they want to keep talking. The best way to avoid them is to keep silent. I never use violence because i creates more problems and the situation gets worse. For example Emily discovered that her roommate was cheating on her film partner and she kept quiet about it. The reason she didn't say anything was because it wasn't her business to say anything. Emily’s main goal was to pursue her internship dream and fit in.Throughout the book she starts to fall for her partner in film.
His name is Ryan; Morgan's boyfriend. When Ryan found out that she was cheating on her,he got mad at Emily because she didn't say anything to him. But since they have to work together to create a movie he started to realise that it wasn't her business to tell him. By the end of the book they were calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend. And he wanted to be with her for the summer. Ryan has a summer job for filming and he wanted Emily to do it with him. Unfortunately she has a better offer for her dream internship and she has to decide if she wants take the summer job with ryan or pursue her dream. Cara rolls her eyes. “So take the job.” “you know i can't.” “because your dream internship, yeah, i
know.” If i was in her shoes i would definitely go back home and do the internship. I would take it because it's a better opportunity for her and it can help her in the future. All though leaving her boyfriend was hard but she saw an opportunity and she took it before it went away. She also wanted to be with her best friend that helped her get through her college experience.
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
In The Big Field, author Mike Lupica explores the theme, "Success uses motivation as fuel." Lupica portrays this theme through the main character, Hutch. Throughout the entire book, Hutch, a young boy that has just recently joined a highly talented baseball team, displays moments that exemplify this main theme. Hutch and his team have a chance to play in the stadium of the Miami Marlins, a Major League Baseball team, as long as they can keep winning games and advancing through a challenging tournament; however, Hutch's favorite position on the field, shortstop, the position located between 2nd and 3rd base, has already been filled on the team. Unfortunately, Hutch gets a demotion from shortstop, to second base, the position located between 1st base and 2nd base. Although Hutch was disappointed and melancholy about the switch in position, he was even more upset about the downgrading of leadership, since the
Julius Caesar is mentioned throughout the book, A Long Way Gone, many times. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael would be reading Julius Caesar or a soldier would be reciting some of the speeches in the play. In Chapter 12 of A Long Way Gone, Ishmael is called over to talk with Lieutenant Jabati. Then, Lieutenant Jabati showed Ishmael the book he was reading, which was Julius Caesar, and asked Ishmael if he had ever heard of the book. Ishmael had read the book in school, and began to recite a speech from the book. After this happened, Lieutenant Jabati and Corporal Gadafi used emotional arguments to motivate the people in the village to stay there and support the military. Also, Lieutenant showed all the people in the village dead bodies to help
Our literature review consisted of six scholarly articles that were studies done on students who were going into college. The first article that we found focused on how important communication is when it comes to making friends. McEwan & Guerrero (2010) talked about the benefits of communication before getting to know someone. We based our questions off of this article regarding communication in order to find out about roommate interactions.
Piaget believed that a child’s development is neither intrinsic (learning based on interest) or extrinsic (learning from an outside force, such as a parent). He believed that a child develops based on his or hers interactions in the environment (Mooney 2000). Piaget created four stages of cognitive development, some of which can be seen in the film “Cheaper by the Dozen”. A few examples of characters that display Piaget’s theory are the twins, who are in the preoperational stage and lack the concept of conservatism, and the mastermind, who is in the concrete operational stage and show's the concept of decentralism. These characters will have Piaget’s theory applied to them in the following paragraphs.
Christopher Johnson McCandless, the main character in the book “Into the Wild,” had made a lot of friends even though he did not like people. Wayne Westerberg was one of Chris’s friends who he met in a bar. Chris also befriended a girl named Jan Burre. Another person who befriended Chris was a guy named Ronald Franz,

I was so ashamed of my physical appearance and nostalgic of my senior year of high school, that I isolated myself from the majority of the people I’d met. I started binge watching Netflix in my dorm room, making frequent trips to a nearby dermatologist and crying to my mom and friends from home about how I hated school and wanted to transfer ASAP. I was cold, lonely and ugly. I couldn’t wait for winter break so I could forget about my sucky dorm and lack of college friends for a while.
In a time where the general population is overweight and obsessed with technology, there isn’t much time for the outside world. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson is about two corpulent men on a journey to walk the Appalachian Trail. At first their tale seems unlikely because of their weight and the fact that they have never hiked a day in their lives. However, it quickly turns into an inspiring story that we, as people, should use to spark our own adventure in the great unknown. Bryson writes A Walk in the Woods to encourage people to live a little and experience the great outdoors, to meet interesting people in it, and to encounter the enthralling wildlife that resides on the Appalachian Trail.
The song “I Get a Kick Out of You” is written and composed by Cole Porter. Porter was well known as one of the prominent songwriters of the 20th century as he was one of the lyricists who was writing his own music and lyrics of most of his songs. Therefore, he’s mostly known for his “Individual songs than complete shows. Porter’s lyrics contain more intellectual references to poetry, philosophy, history, painting and literature than do the lyrics of any other Broadway songwriter. He is best known for the 1934 classic “Anything Goes” and “I Get a Kick Out of You” and for the 1938 Kiss Me, Kate with “Too Darn Hot” and Wunderbar” (Lesson: The Composers of the Broadway). So, beginning 1930s, he wrote many hit songs and one of those hit songs is known as “I get a Kick Out of You.” Which he originally
Defining the American character is quite difficult because American identity is vaguely founded on shared values and ideologies, more so than a particular creed, race, or culture. In order to describe the American character, we will consider the dominate and distinctive qualities of Americans as interpreted by J. Hector St. Jon De Crèvecoeur and Thomas Paine. First, we will examine how Crèvecoeur illustrates Americans as industrious, prideful, and political in “Letters from an American Farmer.” Then, we will analyze from Thomas Paine's “Common Sense” how he depicts the prevalent qualities of Americans to be driven by justice, liberty, emotions, and individualism. Also, because both authors consider the American character and culture different
There is a strong correlation between a person's education and class especially when a person is a from a lower class family. Higher class people have advantage in getting better education, getting into elite colleges, or getting better jobs. A higher class person has those sorts of benefits unlike the lower or working class people. In the book Class Matters, chapter 6, “I wear a tie everyday”, the author illustrates about a guy name Andy Blevins. Andy Blevins is a working class person who works everyday and goes to community college and is worried about being laid-off from his work. Lower class people have the fear of not being able to go to better colleges because of the tuition. They have the fear of not being able to make enough money to
Noah is the one of the main characters of The Notebook. He is the hero of this novel. Noah represents true love and true loyalty. In a way, The Notebook is similar to every modern day romance movie, and Noah represents the “dream man” that all the girls always imagine of having. The characters in movies are used to symbolize ideas, and in this novel, Noah represents true, faithful, committed love. Noah remains loyal to Allie even in the situation where he is unsure whether they will ever meet again or not.
In the story My Favorite Chaperone, by Jean Davies Okimoto, I believe the theme is how working together makes life's struggles easier. The characters show this theme throughout the story. As children immigrants, the main characters struggle with combining a new culture with their family culture to find a new identity without bringing shame to their family. In the story, Maya, the main character, faces issues in how to fit in with a new world in America. In this new world there are different rules and expectations while she still has to respect and follow her family's traditions and rules. This conflict is shown when Maya wants to go to a school dance, but knows her parents would never let her go especially after she gets in trouble for
...ole, the female students became close when they became true to themselves and the cliques begin to blend. For example, Gretchen, one of the Plastics became close friends with the Asian students. Social acceptance should not be the most important thing in anyone’s life. Always wanting this acceptance will cause people to change into someone they are not.
