The dream that I most desire in life is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I’ve always had an interest in the inner workings of the human body, but I also value life, and care for others, and my happiness is the happiness of others. Although this career has its bumps on the road just to see mothers face light up when they see the image of their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. Also known as Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, an Ultrasound Technician uses special machines and equipment that operates on sound waves to determine or diagnose medical problems for patients. There are specializations within this field in which some individuals explore. For instance, areas of specialization includes but not limited to; pregnancy, heart health, gynecology, and abdominal sonography. Although each specializing branch has its own distinctive function, they all involve probing the body to facilitate doctors with diagnoses.
Choosing this field is something that has a profound connection with my personal life. Becoming a Diagnostic Medical sonographer would mean that I have accomplished life long dream. Ever since I was a little, I always wanted to be in the medical field. I have always had a big heart and wanted to help people so when I saw the important role that sonographers play in the medical field, it became clear to me that being a sonographer was exactly what I want to do with my life. In 2007 someone who was very important to me passed away due to gastric cancer. When my grandmother, who was a mother, father, and a friend to me, was diagnosed with gastric cancer my world collapsed. It was devastating news, not only for me but also for the whole family.
Being able to identify lumps, swelling, tissue damage, cysts, and the overwhelming news of the sex of a baby all have something in common, an ultrasound. Swelling of the spleen, kidney stones, blood clots, aneurysms, cancer and so much more can be identified through the works of an ultrasound’s imaging technique. Ultrasound involves many concepts, procedures, and careers. The amount of medical possibilities involved with ultrasounds is useful in major medical diagnostics. The field of ultrasounds and career opportunities are widely growing. As medical careers flourish, needs for technicians in many fields of medicine are increasing. Instead of a doctor choosing complex and risky surgery to find out problems within the body, they can now choose a safer path; the ultrasound path. Patient’s history and physical evaluation are building blocks to diagnostics but ultrasounds are much greater. They are powerful tools used to see beyond the skin into the depths of a person’s body. What ultrasounds are, what types there are, and what they are used for, and the education and careers available are the major themes found in research on the subject. Knowledge of ultrasound and its background may help one decide what career is best for them. Understanding the wide array of diagnostic tests and their uses are essential to figuring out what a career as a sonographer entails and the type of education that is needed. Because there are plenty of possibilities for specializing with different technologies, there is a wide variety of job opportunities in the medical imaging career. The call for ultrasound’s assistance opens new paths in future high-quality careers.

A woman would not know she is pregnant until she was showing and her menstruation was delayed. Therefore, that meant the due date of the baby was unknown. Furthermore, a woman would not know the baby’s health, including the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. Ultrasound is an imaging technique that use high-frequency sound waves, inaudible to the human ear, to produce somewhat precise images of the insides of the abdomen. A device called the transducer is used to transmit the sound waves through the abdomen. Specifically Prenatal and Fetal ultrasounds, which view the inside of a pregnant woman’s abdomen and the fetus. Prenatal and Fetal ultrasound images can determine and evaluate the development of the baby; including its health, age, weight, and the gender and if any abnormalities exist. It is also a chance to study your baby’s profile months before the baby is delivered. Furthermore, it determines the location of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby and the position of the baby.

Today’s ultrasound machines operate using the pulse-echo system. In order to produce an accurate representation of the anatomy being surveyed, the machine must determine echo’s strength and location. Ultrasound systems measure the time it takes for echoes to return and relates that to distance traveled to decipher location of reflectors using the range equation. Ultrasound equipment basically consists of four components, a beam former, receiver, processor, and display (Kaur, 2013). At the beginning of this past summer, I took a job working as what is known as a medical scribe. In short, a scribe is a non-medically trained individual who records and compiles information that hospital physicians use to diagnose patients. In this short amount of time, the importance of medical imaging has become even more abundantly clear then it was before I took this job. In particular, the most common methods of medical imaging boil down to X-Ray, Ultrasound, CT scans (computerized tomography), and MRI scans (magnetic resonance imaging). Of these four, MRI is probably the most enigmatic. It provides one of the most detailed images of inside the human body without using any harmful radiation.

Radiology is a great source for examining the patients’ internal organs and bones due to giving a very detailed image. Radiographs, nuclear medicine, CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound, and a vascular lab are the equipment used to exam the injury of the patient, or the disease the patient might have. This allows pathologists to work in a variety of clinical settings with other physicians and help them with early accurate diagnosis that requires certain qualities such as attention to details, logical thinking and to be familiar with a multitude of topics in clinical medicine and management. Although this may seem like an overwhelming task, it allows me to challenge myself on a daily basis and remain up to date with current and new innovative advancements in medicine.
