To me Jet Black Heart is an escape from the troubles in my world and from what is killing me on the inside. The song makes feel somewhat at peace and that it's alright to not to be alright. The pre-chorus' lyrics are very moving, it makes me feel normal and like someone knows and understands what I'm going through at the moment, like they care and want to help in anyway they can.
That's just on the lyrics, the way it's sang has such a big part in it. In the pre-chorus there is so much emotion put into it that when the chorus comes in it just work together so well. Especially in the second verse and in the bridge you can hear how much was put into it and how much this song means to them. Definitely the first and last Chorus, 2nd Verse and the Bridge are the most emotional and influential part of the whole song.

The song, once again, is quite simple but it is this simplicity that makes the song as powerful as it is. It was very well written and every musical instrument that accompanied the song was epic. This piece of work is truly a masterpiece.
For this assignment, the song I chose was "Awake My Soul" by the band Mumford and Sons. I picked this particular song because I am a huge fan of this band and their songs. Mumford & Sons are an English folk rock band who formed in 2007. The band has released two albums as of 2013, “Sigh No More”(2009) and “Babel”(2012). In December 2010, the band received two Grammy Award nominations, one for Best New Artist and the other for Best Rock Song. They won the Brit Award in 2011 for Best British Album. I find the lyrics of "Awake My Soul" beautifully placed and poetic. Mumford and Sons are known for their lyrically complex style of writing and unique folk sound; their intricate melodies and lyrics full of literary allusions. Their music has a familiar comfort to it but a unique perspective. I love the utter simplicity and wisdom of the messages portrayed throughout many of their songs; arranged in a way that makes one appreciate the beautiful combination of music and lyrics working together.
The song opens up with the chorus, saying “Carry on my wayward son/ For there’ll be peace when you are done” (Kansas). This line foreshadows some sort of issue that the protagonist is having trouble either getting through or finishing. “Lay your weary head to rest/ Don’t you cry no more” (Kansas) almost seems to foreshadow sleep or even eternal sleep in death. The a capella format of the beginning also adds a haunting element before the song proceeds to present both the main theme from the song and also the triplet ‘breakdown’ for lack of better words.
These songs, the way the lyrics, harmonies, and music all fit together to make me forgot all of my problems. I began to use my free time to create a different playlist for every possible emotion I could possibly be feeling. When I feel like nothing in the world can stop me, I blast the Eagles greatest hits out of my jeep window. When I feel like everything in this earth is out to get me, I play my emotional country music role models. From George Strait, to Tim Mcgraw, to Faith Hill, to Garth Brooks, these songs have dragged me out of the deepest holes I ever fell into.
