The influential value system in Thailand which I decided to choose as the main topic of this report is, one of the most well-known Thai traditional festival, Songkran festival or Water Splashing festival. The reason why I chose this problem is that, despite Songkran festival is considered to be one of the main enjoyable Thai traditional custom promoting events which not only attract Thai people, but also foreign tourists to join. However, undeniably, it has the ethics-related issues in some perspectives which are quite questionable and need to be seriously concerned as well e.g. safety, accident, public nudity. Therefore, in my opinion, it would be interesting to discuss more about this festival in term of ethical aspect.

Thai people take this opportunity as celebration and broadly participate in many Songkran-related events held in nationwide such as water fight. Moreover, tourists are also welcomed to join. So, it wouldn’t be wrong to call this festival as one of main tourists’ attraction events. Next, this festival doesn’t concentrate on only splashing water. It’s also the auspicious occasion for families to spend time together and Buddhists to visit temples for making merits. (Thailand, 2014) Lastly, for Songkran, water is the symbol of cleaning. In the past, Thai people used water to gently soak in Buddha image. After that, they used this blessed water from cleaning Buddha image to sprinkle to other people as they believed it will be auspicious and bring good fortune to them. Songkran Festival is traditional Thai celebration which reflects Thai people’s belief, the way they respect each other, and, definitely, exquisite Thai culture. It promotes the warm relationship in many perspectives. In family bonding perspective, this festival encourages Thai people to go visiting their elder relatives, pay respect to them, and spend quality time together. Next, in terms of religious aspect, Songkran festival represents the auspicious time to go making merits and visit temples. In temples, there will be events where Buddhist villagers could come gathering together and celebrate this festival for Buddha’s honour by creating sand pagodas known as ‘Phra Chedi Sai’ decorating with colourful flags.
