Good Old Boy by Willie Morris The book that I chose to read was written by the Mississippi author Willie Morris. The book, Good Old Boy, was written in 1971 and takes place in the small Mississippi town of Yazoo City. The book contains experiences of the author's childhood in this small town. The story began by telling many of the legends of Yazoo City. One of these legends involved a woman who lived by the Yazoo River. She supposedly lured fishermen to her house to kill and bury them in the woods never to be found again. The sheriff eventually found out about her and chased her through the woods into quicksand where she sank and died. Before she was completely under the sand she vowed to return twenty years later to have revenge on the town on May 25, 1904. Her body was retrieved from the quicksand and buried with a giant chain around her grave. On May 25, 1904 the whole town was engulfed in flames. Everything was destroyed in this blaze. The next day, some citizens went to her grave and to their horror the chain had been broken. Another legend was one about Casey Jones, a famous tr...
Feeling unwanted from the closest people in your life who turn away from you when you need them the most, is the worst feeling a person can endure. I chose the song “My Story” by Sean McGee, because people young and old can relate to his song. People from different backgrounds can relate to each other when there are living homeless or raised as a foster child. Sean McGee wrote “my daddy don’t know, my momma don’t care, it don’t matter if I’m here, it don’t matter if I’m dead” people all around the world have the same issues and share a common culture. A master status is the most important status a person occupies, this is a key factor in determining a person’s social position.
...o described him as pale and complaint, and his confusion and frustration is clearly stated in when Lou says "she wants to go to the city" on. From that point on Lou is quite unsure what to do, his life seems to lose meaning. As he come to terms with his loss
A.Freewrite: I am going to write about the point of view used in Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues.” In James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” Baldwin does not use Sonny as the narrator but instead uses his brother. I believe Baldwin used the brother as the narrator to give to give readers the idea that Sonny and his brother do not communicate well with each other. While Sonny listens but does not speak, his brother speaks but does not listen. Baldwin uses the brother as the narrator to highlight the idea that Sonny’s addiction to heroin, love of jazz music, and his melancholy are associated to Sonny’s lack of voice as well as control over his own life.
It is common knowledge that many people on this planet view the way in which our various societies work are much too detached from the issues disrupt our world. Topics like poverty, hunger, and war are all very sensitive subjects that carry a lot of weight and deal with varying levels of emotional baggage and effects on humanity. Because of this, many people prefer to simply pretend that these issues don’t exist, choosing instead to go about their lives as if there is nothing wrong. However, with this way of living, a common complaint that many people have is that humanity is far too ignorant of the plights and trials of the problems that are often kept hidden from the naked eye. In “Central Park,” author Billy Collins mirrors
“And then one morning, all alone, Mary Anne walked off into the mountains and did not come back” (110). Tim O’Brien’s short story “The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong” presents an all-American girl who has been held back by social and behavioral norms – grasping for an identity she has been deprived the ability to develop. The water of the Song Tra Bong removes Mary Anne’s former notion of being as she, “stopped for a swim” (92). With her roles being erased Mary Anne becomes obsessed with the land and mystery of Vietnam and is allowed to discover herself.
Lou is very understanding, and actually listens to Kek. Kek comes from a life where elders are very respected, thought as beautiful and wise. Kek calls Lou very wise, and calls the wrinkles “little moons”. Lou respects that respect, and plays it back at him. She listens intently to him, answers all of his questions, and takes all of his information on his cow, and eventually ends up giving Kek the job. Lou is a very important part of Kek’s bridge, as well as Hannah and the cows. She is one of the only adults that listens to Kek and feels for him. That trait is very important in helping Kek cross his
According to my perspective of the poem “The Snowman” my ideas are in concordance to David Perkins. The entire poem is a metaphor for having a mind that entertains nothingness. The snowman represents the author as a snowman looking out to its environment and feeling cold and miserable inside just like the winter weather. This snowman is unlike a normal snowman with snowman characteristics because its only use in the poem is to describe the emotions of the author towards the society or environment he is placed in. The poem is written in one long sentence which I think means the continuousness of the misery the author feels inside of him since the sentence is a run on and “continuous”. Since this poem is written in a very broad way it can be
Joy Harjo is a writer that enjoyed writing about events or situations that pertained to her life. She was a women’s rights activist but enjoyed writing about her Native American culture and how she believed the environment and all living things had a deeper, more spiritual connection. Her Native American background is crucial to be aware of when reading her poems. She incorporates her beliefs within her writings and that’s what makes her writing so deep in meaning. Her work usually shows an ecocriticism viewpoint. Ecocriticism is the study of literature and the environment from an interdisciplinary point of view, where literature scholars analyze texts that illustrate environmental concerns and examine the various ways literature treats the subject of nature. Harjo’s writing can be related to the essays “The Sacred Hoop” written by Paula Allen, and “Nature and Silence” written by Christopher Manes. “The Sacred Hoop” helps the reader understand the deeper connections people share with the environmental world around them. “Nature and Silence” encourages the reader to understand that nature has a voice, in the sense that
Henry ‘’Harry’’ T Burleigh an African American Composer, Arranger & Baritone, devoted his life to music and to the service of God. Mr. Burleigh a world-famous composer, arranger and soloist, wrote Go down Moses, a negro spiritual The melody to Go Down Moses has a sad nature, it reveals feelings of darkness, almost as if you will never live to see the day of freedom. It is a dramatic production, unforgettable after listening all the way to the closing of the song. There are five primarily rise of notes sung to the words, "Let my People go." There is some repetition in the vocal although the melody differs on its second coming each time, but closes with those same dark five notes.
The song “When the Levee Breaks” was originally written by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929, and then Led Zepplin adopted it in their album Led Zeppelin IV. The song was about The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. During the time it was said that African-Americans were held at gunpoint to repair the the levee. Due to this many African Americans were left with nothing and had to travel to the North in search of a better life. So the meaning of the song is a retailing of that and the emotions of an african american during that time.
Langston Hughes is the author of the poem ‘trumpet player’ among other poems that weaves in the contemporary ideas relating to racial issues, past memories and jazz music (Alexander and Ferris 55). The title of the poem introduces the scene but it is quite figurative. At its face value, the title
Loung was a spoiled brat until her father left her like a side chick. Throughout first they killed my father, Lounge took-in the importance of grit factors and insecurity factors to be successful. One factor that led to Loungs success in first they killed my father was grit. Loung had shown grit by not giving up when times had got hard when the Khmer Rouge army invaded her city forcing her to flee because the Khmer Rouge army wanted to create an agrarian society, whose economy is based on producing and maintaining crops and farmland, Pol Pot wanted to conduct his radical experiment to create an equal utopia for all people. However, Loung valiancy availed her to get to America, but her insecurity had gotten in the way from time to time making her believe that nothing good will happen which then later led to her success.
Shakey Graves (Alejandro Rose-Garcia) is a fast, up and coming performer from Austin, Texas. The single, “Dearly Departed,” from his junior album, And the War Came, was released back in October 2014. We often take life for granted. In the process of fulfilling our desires, we gradually destroy the essence of nature and our morals. In Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “A Musical Instrument”, the parallel between nature and humanity reflects the blindness and greed of humanity through the natural process of destruction and creation. Conveyed significantly with literary elements such as imagery, tone, alliteration and repetition, Browning brings to attention the reality of humanity’s actions and drives mankind to grasp the idea that we are inherently born sinful.
