Upon admission into Genesis, I hope to bring engaging and relatable services. I know that many of peers find it hard to connect with the traditional prayers and services. My leadership and time in BBYO has given me opportunities to participate in and lead services for teens.
One of the most engaging ways to lead a service its to incorporate music. Modern songs that most people know the words to are chosen to supplement traditional services. These songs should have a connection to the prayers. For example the song Lean on Me by Bill Withers can relate to the relationship many Jews have with God or the relationships of the Jewish community. These kinds of musical services are often done at Jewish summer camps as well, with the traditional camp
songs and are loved by everyone who participates. As president of my BBYO chapter, I work with the Judaics chair to plan services that will connect with the young Jewish women of the chapter. I established our chapters traditional of having a yearly female empowerment shabbat. At this program we discuss Jewish women role models such as Lily Rivlin, Golda Meir, and others. We also look at the gendered language in the translations of the prayer we are reading. I think this service is particularly important because as young women and Jews it is often hard for us to feel that our leadership and role in society and community is important. Additionally, last summer I attended BBYO summer program Chapter Leadership Training Conference (CLTC). There, I experienced some of the most interesting and creative services I have ever participated in. One was a DIsney themed morning service, connecting the positive lessons of those movies to Jewish values. Another of our morning services was a meditation service. I feel that creative services would enhance the engagement of participants at Genesis. I hope that while attending Genesis I could implement engaging, creative, and relatable services to other Jewish youth. Moreover, I hope that through this, I may contribute to their meaningful connection to Judaism.
In Verhsawn Ashanti Young’s article titled, “Nah, We Straight: An argument Against Code Switching,” he makes his objectives clear as he argues against people Right to their own language. The author questions the advantage of standard American English as opposed to other types of English. He refers to those aspect as code switching, which he believes can lead to racist thinking. Code switching, according to Young, calls out for one way of speaking to be omitted in favor of others, based on one's rhetorical situations. The author points out that students are required to translate from Afro-American English or Spanglish to standard English and not the other way around, which is concerning. Youngs method to get around this segregation is the usage
Feeling unwanted from the closest people in your life who turn away from you when you need them the most, is the worst feeling a person can endure. I chose the song “My Story” by Sean McGee, because people young and old can relate to his song. People from different backgrounds can relate to each other when there are living homeless or raised as a foster child. Sean McGee wrote “my daddy don’t know, my momma don’t care, it don’t matter if I’m here, it don’t matter if I’m dead” people all around the world have the same issues and share a common culture. A master status is the most important status a person occupies, this is a key factor in determining a person’s social position.
There was a vocal recital on October 19th, 2017 at 7:30PM, held at the performance hall in Mountain view college. Alex Longnecker, a tenor vocalist and Imre Patkai, (pianist) played a series of homophonic textured songs, some being sung in German and others in English. The Three selected songs I will be writing about are, The Lincolnshire Poacher, The Plough Boy, and Im Wunderschonen Monat Mai. This performance played a total of 24 Pieces, composed by 4 composers, being Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ernest Chausson, Benjamin Britten, and Robert Schumann.
“Hurt” a song originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails which portrays self-harm and heroin addiction has been covered by many great artists including Johnny cash. When Johnny cash covered this song I got a deferent message from the lyrics while he sings it, maybe it is because of his voice or how he lived his life, but when he is singing this song I get a sense that he is singing about a loved one that has passed on, growing older, and his legacy.
American Beauty/American Psycho was an album that was sung by the band Fall Out Boy in 2015. Fall Out Boy is an alternative/indie rock band with a little hint of pop in some of their songs. This album, which is the band’s most recent album, is full of a lot of good songs and songs that maybe some people wouldn’t like. Fall Out Boy is a face-paced band, which means their songs are faced-paced. A lot of their songs could be a little hard to understand for people who don’t listen to this kind of music. The album does not have many of these types of songs, which is why it is a favorite among Fall Out Boy fans.
This experience was really out of my comfort zone. It was hard to be an outsider and not prepared for what was to come and not speaking one of the languages used to understand the entire service. This service learning project gave me the opportunity to try a new church and gain a deeper respect for a different religion. Everyone at the service was very educated on speaking the sacred texts and participating in the rituals practiced. I hope to have gained a better understanding for those who are new to religions and are nervous to come to a worship service. I will make more of an effort to be welcoming and accommodating to those who are new to our church.
The music of today has many songs in which there is a hidden meaning or stories behind the song. The song " Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke and Pharrell is a song with a hidden meaning given much to talk about , another song which has a similar meaning with previous song is "You Do Not Even Know It " by Rick Ross. The intent of this paper is to compare song to song through its similar meaning. Both of these songs have a very rough meaning. These songs are inspired in hidden personalities , lies , appearances, violation , drugs , sex, etc. In " Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke and Pharrell it talks about rape and sexual assault and all of these because of the use of alcohol and drugs. In "You Do Not Even Know It " by Rick Ross it also talks about how some people appearencess are not what they really are in
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. The mission of CCML was knowing, growing and loving. They seek to live out our mission by worshipping together as a local community of believers, growing in spiritual maturity through discipleship, education, and small groups, caring for one another within the context of the larger church body and small groups, and Communicating the love of Christ to our world, both through local outreach and global mis...
Johnny Cash can be considered one of the best country artists of all times, but the soul of his music is rooted in the blues. Many of Cash’s songs are about the complications that come with love. The four songs listed above are only a few parts of the story Cash teaches us about the world of love. Most importantly, Cash does a wonderful job of explaining the complicated nature of love and how it really is the most powerful force in the world. Before diving into each of these songs, one must first understand how Cash is a blues artist just as much as he is a country artist.
It is apparent that the issues are similar at Willow Creek and New Hope, as both have experienced great growth. They are addressing these issues by adding additional services and by assignment of small groups or small ministries to meet their congregation's needs. They have been successful in addressing the issue based on each church's individual needs. Willow Creek has added services to accommodate the service seekers or the un-churched. New Hope attempts to match congregation member's needs through joining auxiliaries or other ministries of the church.
“Reaching Out without Dumbing Down” seems to be constructed for the church leader, elder, or pastor who is considering altering their current, historic worship style for a more modern one that may attract greater numbers of unsaved people. She provides excellent standards to help Pastors and Worship Leaders plan, execute, and evaluate worship services. These same standards provide a great opportunity to educate the church family on the reasons behind the use of certain worship elements. Although written for church leadership, the everyday church member would also benefit from understanding the very concepts that Dawn is directing at God-empowered leaders.
into a richer experience of worship and a more effect life of service" (Crabb, 1977, p.31). The method to establishing an
The song that I choose to do this assignment on is Fight the Power by Public Enemy. Fight the Power was written in 1989 and quickly became a street anthem for millions of youths. It reflects with issues dealing with both the Civil Rights Movement and to remind everyone that they too have Constitutional Rights. This particular song is about empowerment but also fighting the abuse of power that is given to the law enforcement agencies. It gave citizens of the U.S a more modern outlook on the many struggles that not only the African American community is up against but the other minority groups as well. The song’s message was eventually supposed to bring people together and make the world a better place, even though some teens saw it as a way
Namely, they intended it to be a “needed resource to examine afresh what it means to be an adolescent in today’s culture and how those who minister to young people can best reach them.” Beginning with the first chapter, they described the contemporary culture of teenagers. For instance, they included how teenagers approached music, institutions, and how they uphold postmodernism. Furthermore, they provided reasons for their approach. When discussing regarding the tension between adults and adolescents, they suggested that adults might be at fault in regards to the tension. Lastly, they listed ways one can approach these adolescents in their culture. In the next chapter, they included methods the church might utilize in approaching adolescents in the future, according to trends and projections, such as being involved in public schools and hosting a youth center. Chapter 3 presented different styles of current youth ministries. Concerning the varieties of models, Vukich and Vandegriff concluded that as youth workers, one must choose the ministry that works best with his or her students. Chapter 4 described adolescence, and chapter 5 recorded specific characteristics adolescents cultivate and, principally, how youth leaders should respectively approach these teenagers. For instance, in the area of physical development, workers should avoid making fun of the adolescent’s physical changes; in the area of mental development, be understanding when the student has his or her spiritual and religious doubts; in the area of emotional development, be a role model by displaying a stable emotional image; and in the area of social development, present what the Bible teaches concerning how people should be socially. In the next three chapters, chapters 6-8, discussed identity in regards to adolescents. First, they defined what self-identity is, and, second, they wrote concerning
They understand and take information into their system simply by hearing it. Others require more than mere words. To ensure you engage every person in your house of worship, consider putting together a hype video of sorts. You can play this video at the end of service, during giving time or whenever else you feel it might be helpful. Make sure to include how funds will be used, communicate the importance consistent funding has on your effectiveness as a ministry and be sure to share the need features of Givlify and how it makes giving easier
