How can police officials solve the issue of fellow officers abusing their power and at times taking the law into their own hands? In the field of law enforcement, it can be difficult to balance what is the right course of action to use based on the criminals and their intentions while being placed under arrest.
It is important that officers make all the appropriate precautions so that their decision to implement use of force cannot be miscued as abuse of power. Police officers are on the force to protect and serve that is why it is detrimental for the department, community, and themselves to make the most responsible decision even when they are faced with the worst of circumstances. It seems to be displayed in the media, that officers are abusing their power far too often and crossing the line in using excessive force to handle situations. More interaction and training from higher ranking police officers, aggressive and frequent IAD investigations and more in-depth pre-employment psychological analysis, can help to prevent abuse of power by officers while on duty.
It is shocking how much media is available concerning police officers using excessive force. An intervention could provide a substantial decrease in these excessive use of force incidents, which will increase public confidence in law enforcement. Police officers using excessive force is preventable when the situation can be handled much differently. Is excessive force really necessary or could less aggressive still get the same result when handling the situation? The answer to this question can be difficult to determine. ...effort to get this problem under control. The idea is to make sure the public does not have to fear that an officer of the law can use their power and get away with this type of behavior. It is the job of the entire police force to look at the situation and work amongst themselves to find anwsers that work best for their department, by doing this it could absoultely reduce unnecessary abuse of power in their department. It would not be acceptable to sweep this behavior under-the-rug, but to deal with it head on. It is possible to prevent so many unnecessary incidents of excessive force or abuse in police departments.
