There are eight planets in the solar system, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune; there is also a dwarf planet Pluto.
Mercury- Means the Greek god Hermes, he was the messenger for all the other gods. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, as it is so close to the sun it is near earth and can be visible to observers on earth either late in the evening or early in the morning. Mercury has no moons, it is the smallest planet in the solar system, and it orbits the sun once every 88 days.
Venus- Means the roman goddess of love and beauty. It is the second largest planet in the solar system and is also the second planet to the son, it is sometimes referred to as ‘The Earth’s sister’ because of their similar size

Jupiter orbits the sun once every 11.8 earth years. It is a very stormy planet, the ‘red spot’ is also called ‘the Eye of Jupiter’ this storm has been raging for the last 300 years, this planets hurricane winds blow across a large area than Earth. Jupiter has 3 rings they are named Gossamer, Main and Halo. They are very faint and can only be seen when the light from the sun hits Jupiter and lights them up.
Saturn- Means the roman god of agriculture, called Cronus. Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun, it is best known because of its ring system that was discovered by the astronomer Galileo Galilei, and it orbits the sun once every 29.4 years. There are over 150 moons and smaller moonlet, the most known are Titan and

It has 14 moons; the most known is Triton, it is the eighth planet from the sun which makes it the most distant in the solar system. Only one spacecraft has flown to Neptune in 1989 Voyager 2 spacecraft swept past the planet and returned the first close up images of Neptune. It has six rings which circle the planet; they are different to any other planets rings as they vary in thickness.
Pluto- Means in Greek mythology he is known as Hades the god of the underworld. Pluto is known as the dwarf planet, it has four moons, and the largest is called Charon. Pluto was first a planet but was rename the dwarf planet in 2006, it the largest dwarf planet and Pluto was discovered on February 18th 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh.
Asteroids- Are small and rocky, there are millions of them. The asteroid belt is a large majority of asteroids in the solar system, they can be found near Mars and others orbit around the Earth. The most know asteroids is 1 Ceres, it is 952 kilometres across, with a diameter of 54 kilometres. 1 Ceres was discovers on January the 1st 1801 by astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi. It was first called a planet but was later renamed as an asteroid as more and more asteroids where

Have you ever looked up into the night skies and wondered what might be out there? One question I always wonder is where in the universe might there be a livable planet? Well the answer might be closer than you think, well actually 588 million kilometers away from earth. Jupiter of course is what I’m talking about. Fell first let’s ask the why we might move. Let’s face it earth is not going to be able to be habitable forever in fact ate the rate humans are polluting the atmosphere earth won’t be around that much longer. So might need a new place to live. So could the answer be Jupiter? Before that we need to know a little about the new planet and if it’s able to sustain life. Let’s start with the Jupiter’s history. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Jupiter was named after the king of the gods and Roman mythology. The ancient Greeks named the planet after Zeus, the king of the Greek pantheon. In 1610, a man that goes by the name “Galileo Galilei” was looking through his homemade telescope when he came across Jupiter. He notice four objects circling Jupiter and described them as "four fixed stars, totally invisible by their smallness" it was there were he discovered four large moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, which underwent several name change but are now known as the Galilean moons. This was the first time celestial bodies were seen circling an object other then Earth. Jupiter spins faster than any other planet, taking 10 hours to complete a turn on its axis, compared to that of 24 hours for Earth. This rapid spin makes Jupiter bulge at the equator and flatten at the poles, making the planet about 7 percent wider at the equator than at the poles. This is Jupiter and this is Jupiter next to the earth. Jup...
To date Uranus has been found to have 21 satellites four of which have yet to be named and 11 rings.
Pluto is small compared to the other planets. Pluto is about half the size of the next smallest planet, Mercury. However, there is no scientific reason whatsoever to pick the size of Mercury as being the size of the smallest object to be called a planet. Mercury itself is less than half the size of Mars, and Mars is only about half the size of Earth or Venus. Earth and Venus are only about one-seventh the size of Jupiter.
Apollo is a standout amongst the most intricate and vital divine beings, and is the lord of numerous things, including: music, verse, craftsmanship, prophets, bows and arrows, torment, prescription, sun, light and learning. He is the child of ZEUS and the Titan Leto, and was conceived in the Greek island of Delos, alongside his more seasoned twin sister ARTEMIS – goddess of the
Pluto is usually farther from the Sun than any of the nine planets; however, due to the eccentricity of its orbit, it is closer than Neptune for 20 years out of its 249 year orbit. Pluto crossed Neptune's orbit January 21, 1979, made its closest approach September 5, 1989, and will remain within the orbit of Neptune until February 11, 1999. This will not occur again until September 2226.
Uranus is so far away that scientists knew comparatively little about it before NASA's Voyager 2 undertook its historic first encounter with the planet. The spacecraft flew closely past distant Uranus, and came within 81,500 kilometers (50,600 miles) of Uranus's cloudtops on Jan. 24, 1986. Voyager 2 radioed thousands of images and mass amounts of other scientific data about Uranus, its moons, rings, atmosphere, interior and magnetic environment. However, while Voyager has revealed much about the gas giant, many questions remain to be answered.

Apollo is a young Greek god that symbolized the sun. He is frequently represented as a strong and handsome young man. He drove a chariot across the sky which was led by two horses that breathe fire. Apollo was a strong and powerful God among Greek mythology, starred in many stories involving power struggles and trust, and overall made a very important impact on Greek mythology and understanding outer space. Apollo had many unique characteristics to him.
Venus is the second planet from the sun and the sixth largest. Scientists sometimes refer to it as the morning or evening star. It has an extremely slow rotation which means that its year is actually shorter than its day; one day on Venus is about two hundred and forty three Earth days, while one year is two hundred and twenty five Earth days (Exploration). The distance from the sun is 67,232,400 miles (Distance), being that close to the sun, Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system, the average temperature is 864 degrees Fahrenheit but it can get to over 900 degrees, which is hot enough to melt lead (Coffey). The size of Venus is very much like that of Earth, just a little bit smaller (Coffey…Size). The color of Venus is actually a bright white color, most of the yellowish orange pictures you see are false color images used to show the features of the surface (Cain).
Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, has yet to be discovered as in depth as Juno will. NASA New Frontiers recently established the Juno Mission to observe Jupiter (Ionescu 1). The spacecraft is currently on route to Jupiter and it is set to arrive in 2016. Juno will orbit Jupiter thirty-three times total before shutting down (Ionescu 1). Juno will observe Jupiter with deeper observation than can be seen by a telescope. The Juno Spacecraft is a project made to discover Jupiter’s high winds, a possible water source, and the planetary structure.
The fourth planet from the sun was named after the Roman god of war, Ares and the Greek god of war, Mars. The month of March was named after him so the Romans believed that March was the time of war. Juno, wife of Jupiter, became pregnant with him when Flora, the goddess of flowering and blossoming plants, touched her. Mars was known for his outrage and fury. He is said to have loved battle and killing. He raped a Vestal Virgin, Rhea Silvia. This led to Mars having two sons, Romulus and Remus, who would later found Rome.

Neptune gets its name from the Roman god of the sea. Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun and is the fourth largest. Neptune was discovered after scientist noticed that Uranus orbit didn't follow Newton's law, it was presumed that there must be another planet. Galileo originally thought Neptune was a star. Pluto's orbit is so eccentric, it sometimes crosses the orbit of Neptune making Neptune the most distant planet from the Sun. Neptune has been visited by only one spacecraft, Voyager 2 on Aug 25, 1989. Much of we know about Neptune comes from this single encounter. Neptune's blue color is largely the result of absorption of red light by methane in the atmosphere. Neptune has rapid winds and large storms. Neptune's winds are the fastest
Our solar system has eight planets, their moons and satellites, and they are all orbiting the Sun. The eight planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto used to be the ninth planet but IAU changed the definition of planet and Pluto did not meet the standards so it is now a Dwarf planet.
