Solar Heating
It seems self-evident that, as a global society, we must transition eventually from the nonrenewable fossil fuels we currently rely on to renewable sources of energy such as biomass, wind, and particularly solar energy. The latter, though it involves some difficulties, which we will discuss shortly, is especially attractive, I think, because its source is the energy provided by the sun, which is so vast that, according to some, “if it could be effectively harnessed, two days’ worth of solar energy could provide more power than all known fossil fuel reserves.” (Duke Power)
Because I will be getting a house of my own in just a few years, I decided that an interesting topic for study might be solar heating. There are two different kinds of solar heating, so I will briefly discuss them both:
Active Solar Heating
There are two different kinds of active solar heating systems: air and liquid. In both kinds of Active Solar Heating, flat plate solar energy collectors are installed on the roof or on the ground. Most often, the side that faces the sun has a glass or plastic cover and the inside space is a black absorbing material. Air systems use air to capture, transfer, and store heat produced by the collectors, while the liquid systems use water or an antifreeze solution. From there, fans or pumps deliver the heat to the house. Ultimately, I feel I would opt for the liquid system, because they cost less to operate and ta...
... the sun isn’t as high up in the sky. Large open spaces and a covered loft promote stack ventilation which also further increase the comfort zone. A mud room/hallway doubles as an airlock during extreme temperature months. The addition of active systems suffices for the rest of the heating load. On the roof positioned is a solar hot water panel which has access to solar gain. A small tankless electric water heater boosts stored hot water temperatures when needed. The ultimate goal is to simply reduce energy use by half of what the average household uses. The equipment chosen is an Eemax Electric Tankless Hot Water Heater. A solar hot water panel mounted on the dormer heats water through glycol exchange. A tankless electric hot water heater 1) boosts the solarheated stored water if it is below desired temps and 2) provides back up water heating during cloudy periods.
Solar energy is energy taken from the light that reaches earth's surface from the sun. There are four different kinds of solar energy, which are active solar systems, passive solar systems, photovoltaic cells and concentrating power systems. An active solar systems is a system that captures solar energy by mechanical means. Common active solar systems are often in buildings or homes. Some examples are roof collectors and water heating. Low Intensity and high variability have limited the use of active solar energy in Canada. A pass...
Major settlements occurred after the nineteenth century. The British had quickly out-numbered the Aboriginal community, leaving them powerless to the changes or the invasion. The belief systems of the Europeans overpowered the aboriginal’s way of life, pressuring them to conform to the...

Three types of heat transfers help solar cookers use the sun’s energy to cook food. Heat is always transferred from the warmer object to the cooler object. Heat is also transferred to and through some materials better than others. The three types of heat transfers are radiation, conduction, and convection. Convection is the heat transfer by movement through materials such as air or a liquid. Materials like these are called mediums. Convection is the primary way heat can be transferred through liquids and gases. To classify a heat transfer as convection, hot air has to rise up to equally heat the air around it. Box solar cookers have to retain this hot air to cook food, so the cookers have to have lids with a transparent covering. The transparent covering shuts in all of the hot air and keeps out the cool air. The second heat transfer is the transfer of heat between two objects, or substances, that are directly in contact with each other. This heat transfer, called conduction is the primary way heat can be transferred through solids. In gases and liquids, conduction works poorly because the atoms have a great deal of space between them. Since they have a lot of space between each other, they can’t communicate heat to one another. The solid, aluminum foil, is commonly used in homemade solar ovens because it is a metal. It is well known metal is a great conductor of heat. Since metal (aluminum) is a great conductor of heat, whatever comes in contact with it will gradually absorb the heat from the metal. The third type of heat transfer is radiation. Radiation is the transfer of energy (heat) through space by electromagnetic waves. Solar energy reaches Earth by radiation (Pearson 485). When an energy wave comes directly in contact with...
In passive solar design, the vertical and horizontal surfaces control the heat transfer; in winters collect and distribute solar heat and dissipate heat in summer. Passive solar techniques utilize solar energy through direct or indirect solar gain to achieve environmental comfort in the building. The key factors in passive solar building design are: site planning and design; thermal mass; solar geometry; ventilation and vegetation.
Preview: Today I will discuss the potential that solar power has to become this country’s main supply of energy and the latest research that can make solar power more efficient and cost effective. I will also present the environmental benefits that come with using solar power over other and more harmful forms of energy.

According to numerous British observers, aboriginal ranked “far behind other savages,” “the lowest link in the connection of the human races,” “the lowest of the nations in the order of civilization.” (p.108) http://www.murschhauser.net/documents/australien/Banner_Landrecht.pdf) This speaks volumes to the disgust the British felt towards the aboriginals and human beings, and would allow them to not even consider them human beings. These feelings originated from numerous aspects of the aboriginal culture and lifestyle, including their looks, how and what they ate, and how they behaved. In comparison to the well clothed British, the aborigines were nearly naked in comparison. Arthur Phillip noted they had “not even to have made an attempt towards clothing themselves” (107http://www.murschhauser.net/documents/australien/Banner_Landrecht.pdf) This combined with their supposed “hideous” appearance, aided in the belief that these savages were the lowest link in the connection of the human races. There are numerous accounts of British colonies describing their distaste for the aboriginal looks and behavior, and although these are individual accounts, the mass of negative opinions and descriptions of these people began to
An average view from a member of Aboriginal Spirituality on the land itself would be along the lines of “the land owns me” or “it is my mother”. However, this is where the injustice stands as many negatively interpret this land-man relationship that I cannot word with justice to these Aboriginals. The English most certainly did not take this into account, even before they inhabited this land, they were always against this nomadic nature, failing to view its beauty. This was evident in the journal of an explorer, William Dampier who wrote in “The New Voyage” that the Aboriginal people had no fencing, to mark off their land and also mentioned that they “have no houses, but lye in the open air without any covering the earth being their bed and the heaven their canopy.” The whole Land Rights controversy which was finally fixed, after the poor Aboriginals’ constant protesting and movements, such as the Yirrkala bark petitions and the Wave Hill walk off, finally being established in after a painful almost 200 years, in 1976. Let me remind you readers about the actual origins of this discrimination of land rights, which was violated when the land was invaded and stolen, there is no justification over this land
Solar cookers represent an eco-friendly form of cooking, and they signify one of the most fundamental methods of harnessing solar energy for human use. In the southern African region, solar cookers have gradually grown in popularity over the last few decades, as they represent an efficient solution to many of the economic and fuel-related problems facing rural communities. Free solar energy can be harnessed and used as a fuel to operate solar cooking apparatuses, thereby reducing the need for other fuels such as paraffin and wood (see Tucker, 1999). These cookers play a vital role in the lives of the many families who make use of them, as they are cheap and simple to operate. They provide the users with an effective and reliable method by which to cook their meals and play a huge role in terms of money-savings for these families.
... and monthly water filling. Solar energy is the cleanest and purest form of energy, allowing for cleaner air overall in our environment. There is great hope for a lot more solar panels to be installed worldwide. Solar is a viable alternative energy with solar panels becoming more affordable and more efficiently designed.
Training is an integral part of any organization’s development and is an ongoing process. Training programs will vary according to the position held within a company. “Training is a learning experience that seeks a relatively permanent change in individuals that will improve their ability to perform on the job” (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007, p. 223, para. 1). Good organizations can be linked with the training and development of good employees. Any organization’s success in growth and innovation is dependent upon the talent, motivation, and leadership of its employees. Efforts made to recognize the value of each employee and the job he or she performs will contribute to a workplace environment that inspires, supports, and rewards employee development.
Solar water heaters work by using energy from the sun. There are two types of systems for solar water heaters, an open system and a closed system (“Tapping into the Sun”). These systems depend on the type of climates they are installed in (“Tapping into the Sun”). Open systems are worth the installation if the weather is year round sunny, closed systems are better if the weather gets cold. The water cannot be run during winter so the system will be switched to fuel and in the summertime when it is warm, so the sy...
A very important part of operating a successful organization is ensuring that the employees are effectively trained. Employees that aren’t properly trained, especially in a service organization, can have a negative effect on the customers’ experience. It pays off for employers to spend the time and money on training their employees. In the article titled Importance of Employee Training: 6 Reasons Why It Saves You Money, the author, Brian Benton, says “Employees who feel inadequate, underachieving, or unsupported are unhappy. They aren’t satisfied in their work, which will cause them to underperform, make mistakes, and not care about their work product. That costs the business in lost time and money.” (Benton, 2014). This paper will illustrate
