Some people believe that softball is just the femal version of baseball. This is not true. Although baseball and softball have many similarities, such as the feild and overall concept, they have many differences too. For example the pitching form. These next few paragraphs will outline some of the similarities and differences between the two sports.
Baseball and softball have the same overall concept. There are two teams. Nine players are allowed on the feild at one time. The postions are the same, such as pitcher, catcher, short-stop, and on and on. Each game uses innings. In both baseball and softball the defense wants to get three outs, so that they can switch to offense. There are four bases. The forth base, home plate, scoring the runs.

In softball, the distance from base to base is 60 ft. In baseball that distance is 90 ft. In softball the distance between the mound and home plate is 43 ft. In baseball that distance is 60 ft.
Another difference between the sports is the bat. In softball the maximum length of a bat is 34 in. Also the bat is much slimmer compared to a baseball bat, whose maximum length is 43 in. The ball used in softball has a circumference of about 12 in. In baseball the ball used has a circumference of about 9 in.
In baseball the regular amount of innings is nine. In softball the regular amount of innings is seven. If at the end of these amount of innings both teams are tied, both baseball and softball games would go into extra innings. The difference being that in baseball the extra inning are exactly the same as a regular inning, but in softball, starting in the eighth inning, the offensive team begins the inning with the ninth hitter in the batting order placed on second base. Softball was developed as an indoor game in 1887 by George W.Hancock in Chicago. He used a 17-inch ball with outward turned seams. In the Spring of 1888, Hancock’s game moved outdoors. It was played on a small diamond and called indoor-outdoor. In 1889 Hancock published the first set of rules because of such high popularity in the sport. In 1895 a fire department officer with the name of Lewis Rober decided that he needed an activity to keep the firefighters active during their free time. Rober was unfamiliar with Hancock’s version of the game and in 1895 adapted the game for outdoor play. Rober used a 12-inch ball with a cover like a baseball. In 1900, Rober named the league Kitten League Ball.
The rules of baseball and softball are extremely complex, so only the basics are necessary to distinguish the sports. In both sports the primary rule is to advance the runner around the bases to home plate when the ball is hit. In baseball stealing the bases is another way to advance the runner, but this is not permitted in softball because the ball must be hit before a runner can leave the base. Baseball requires nine innings to complete a game, and softball only requires seven. The softball player is out if the last hit is a foul ball, while the baseball player stays at the plate until another strike is called or hits successfully. As one can see, a player that switches games must familiarize himself with the difference in the rules to succeed.

Adrenaline rushed through the players’ veins as the crowd cheering echoed from the bleachers to the outfield. Softball and baseball are team sports which both require an umpire and a diamond shaped field. All players are important. Most aspects of the games are the same. Each team has only nine players on the field at nine different positions. Each inning ends when there are three outs. Baseball generally consists of nine innings, whereas softball usually is played in seven innings. People think that softball is not as tough as baseball because they think that softball is a soft sport. I have been playing softball for about ten years, but prior to that I played baseball. However, the game of softball is on a whole different level. Softball plays require much more speed, and there is a greater possibility of getting injured. The game of softball is more hazardous and fast-paced than baseball.
All the math work, along with physics principles, aided in proving that math has a significant role in the game of softball. Although people know that math is included in softball, the degree of its inclusion is still a mystery to both the audience and players. As seen in the mathematics work and graphs above, an average throw of a regulation fast pitch softball is parabolic in shape. This parabola has a curvature known as the trajectory, or the bath of the flying ball. This trajectory and parabola increases as the distance of the throw increases, therefore, the maximum height of the throw increases. This proves that an average softball throw has many mathematical aspects that shape the way the sport is played.
Now if you're anything like me, you know that when you start a sport for the first time. You have questions like my first question, “what in the world is softball”. Well now that I am a”softball”player I can tell you all there is to know about softball. Softball is a game between two teams with two sections to the field in field and outfield. There is the pitcher, the catcher, 1st,2nd,and3rd baseman, shortstop, and left,right,and center field.
In both baseball and football you also get to wear a uniform. They are usually your team’s color scheme and a number they give to you or you pick. Both sports also where helmets and cleats for safety precautions. However many players still get hurt. Baseball and football were both created in the 1800’s. You have to have hand eye coordination and physical capabilities to run, swing, or catch a ball. Also, you need to be able to predict the other players and teams next moves. So you need to keep a clear mindset and use teamwork.
The first reason is, softball players have less time to react to the ball while batting and fielding. Softball fields are closer and smaller than baseball fields. Baseball infields are 16,700 feet and softball infields are only 7,200 feet. This leaves softball players in the infield, outfield and the batters with less time to react to a pitch or a hit. As Paige and I walked across the field towards our team I felt euphoric. Four long years of work, sweat, and dedication had led up to this night. It was the perfect end to my senior year of softball.
