Not The Same Game Softball was invented in 1887, but was not called softball. Until 1926, Softball was know as indoor baseball or ladies baseball. Softball is based off the game of baseball and they are alike in many ways. Although, softball does differ from baseball. Unlike other sports that are played by both genders, softball and baseball are not played the same.Baseball and softball differ in base- running, pitching style, and size of the ball. First, baseball and softball differ in base-running. In baseball, runners are able to lead off before a pitch is thrown. This allows pitchers to try and pick off base runners. Pitchers may often look at the runner many times before throwing a pitch. Pitchers may also make several throws to whichever base the runner is at in hopes of picking him off. Unlike baseball, base runners in softball cannot leave the base until the ball is released from the pitcher's hand. If a softball player were to the leave the base before the ball is released, the umpire would call “dead ball.” The runner who left the bag early is out, and the previous pitch doesn’t count as a ball or strike. In baseball, pitchers throw overhand. Throwing overhand leads to many arm injuries. Problems with the labrum, rotator cuff, and elbow are common. Many baseball pitchers get “Tommy John” surgery. Also, pitchers stand on an elevated mound, 90 feet away from the batter. In contrast, softball pitchers throw underhand, which is a natural movement of the arm. Therefore, softball pitchers are less likely to be injured from pitching. Softball pitchers don’t pitch on an elevated mound. Pitchers throw on a mound level with the rest of the playing field. Lastly, softball pitchers throw from a mound 43 feet away from the batter. Being that close to the batter, pitches are a lot faster.
