Soft drinks are popular worldwide taking up 25% of the beverage market. Nearly two hundred countries enjoy these drinks. These drinks consist of carbonated water, flavoring, and lots of sugar.
Two thousand years ago, Greeks and Romans saw the benefits of drinking and bathing in mineral water. This practice became popular throughout Europe and made its way to America. It was thought mineral water cured headaches, hangovers, and nervous afflictions. The drink became very popular for not only its medical benefits, but also for its taste.

The sugar can rot your teeth. Whenever you eat anything sugary, a bacteria is left behind on your teeth and gums. This can lead to cavities or tooth decay. Another body part you might not expect to be affected by sugar is your skin. Proteins in your skin help to keep the skin firm and youthful. Sugar molecules in your bloodstream attach to these proteins and create harmful complexes called AGE or advanced gyration end products. This destroys the proteins and causes wrinkles and saggy skin.
Your heart is also affected by sugar. Consuming sugar causes your body to produce insulin to counteract the sugar. More insulin in the bloodstream can damage your arteries. The walls of the arteries grow faster than normal and become more rigid or tense. This causes more stress to your heart which damages it over time. Eventually this can lead to heart attacks or strokes. People who eat greater than the recommended daily amount of sugar are twice as likely to die from heart

There are three major companies that hold the majority of sales in the carbonated soft drink industry in the United States. They are the Coca Cola Company with 44.1% market share, followed by The Pepsi-Cola Company with 31.4% market share, and Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. with 14.7% market share. Each company respectively has numerous brands that it sales. These top brands account for almost 73% of soft drink sales in the United States. Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. owns two of the top ten brands sold. Colas are the dominant flavor in the U.S carbonated soft drink industry; however, popularity for flavored soft drinks has grown in recent years. The changing demographics of the U.S population have been an important factor in the growing popularity of these flavored soft drinks. The possible impact of this factor will be addressed later in the case.

Focusing on the downstream of the supply chain it is to be pointed out that concentrate producers incure relatively low fixed costs with respect to production plant, staff, equipment and R&D as the concentrate is produced of a more than 100 years old formula and relatively cheap raw material (e.g. caffeine).
