Even before watching this video I felt the soda ban was a ridiculous idea. I felt the soda ban would be laden with many caveats and Casey Neistat’s video confirmed that notion. There are many other ways to promote an obesity rate reduction such as promoting healthier food options or making whole fresh foods more readily available, promoting more physical activity and the like. I do not think the soda ban would have worked because all it was only restricting a very small portion of businesses that sell sodas. While sodas may be a large contributor to the US obesity epidemic there are many other sources of sugar-laden foods and drinks such as fast food meals, energy drinks, processed juices, and sports drinks. I was floored but not surprised
that Mayor Giuliani said the ban would force people to understand, however, restricting certain cup sizes of soda would not force the population at large to understand the connection between sugar and obesity. Unless the government is going to regulate the entire soda industry, including the size available for purchase and how much can be purchased at one time then I feel any soda ban would be fruitless. I feel that we need to do a better job of being informed consumers and be more aware of what we put in our bodies.
The New York Soda Ban is a step in the wrong direction and efforts should be put towards making life better, rather than focusing on a movement that will have little to no effect. Realize that I am not stating the soda should be drank, because even I know that soda is harmful towards the body and is one of the leading causes of obesity. However, I believe that the soda ban will have little effect and that time and money should be applied somewhere where the act would have an effect of making life better. The reason I do not believe this ban will do as much good as stated, is because the ban is flawed. This brings me to my first point, which is, one cup of boysenberry juice has 256 grams of sugar, equaling to 225 calories. One cup of Cola only
This article is talking about a mayor banning beverages larger than 16 oz. at restaurants, sports arenas and movie theaters. The reason this mayor wants to ban large sodas is because he is afraid for all of New York’s health. That’s a good thing because a lot of us don’t know what we drink and eat most of the time. We just eat our food we don’t even bother to look what’s really in side such as calories, fats and oils in our food. This Mayor is doing New York a huge favor by banning large sodas. He’s helping everyone in New York about their health but people of New York doesn’t see that. There are people who are trying to not let him pass this law because some of them probably drink 16 oz. every day of once a week or twice a week or even more.
What is your favorite soda? Coke? Do you know what is in soda? Cutting down on soda can be the geginning of a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that soda, though it tastes good, has many negative effects that outweigh the positive effects. Soda, especially diet, is detrimental to the health of your body.
In the past couple years people all around the nation, whether it's in New York City or an 8th Grade classroom in Michigan, people have been pressed with the question, whether the New York Soda Ban, is a good thing, improving health, or if there is a larger issue. Is this decision showing evidence of the Government interfering with our basic civil liberties?
If I gave you a can of rat poison, would you drink it? What if I told you that every time you popped open a can of diet soda, that’s what you would be drinking? I’m sure some of you in here really enjoy diet soda, but still drink it because you don’t think the ingredients in the soda will ever harm you. Diet soda has many different ingredients which include some that are very bad for your health and can lead to death. Today we are all going to look at dangerous ingredients that are in diet soda, some of the side effects diet soda will cause, and some diseases and complications you may develop.
Schlosser also points out how the fast food industry is able to secure its influence over the children by taking up such initiatives like providing funding to many American schools that faced budgetary setbacks. He says that corporate ad firms took on school districts as clients and began placing fast food ads in school hallways and on school buses . The corporations came to the realization that an entirely new, untapped market had been opened up to them. Never before had they thought that they could promote their products to kids when they were in school. They saw that the time that kids spent in the classroom was valuable because it was several hours out of the day that the kids could be advertised to. Schlosser also points out how many
The obesity epidemic is one of the most pressing issues at this point in both American society and U.S. public policy initiatives. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 35.9% of U.S. adults over the age of twenty are obese (CDC, 2013). The CDC further notes that 69.2% of U.S. adults twenty years of age and over are overweight (this percentage includes those who are obese). The obesity problem is not exclusive to the adults in the U.S. The CDC notes that 18.4% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 are currently obese (CDC, 2013). These statistics illustrate the severity of the obesity epidemic in this country, but what can be done to address or even correct this problem? Many people have proposed solutions, but few are as radical as the proposal from Michael Bloomberg (the New York City Mayor) in 2012.
It is sad. People from all races and backgrounds are obese. In a recent survey done at Henry Ford College, 43 percent of students were overweight. Whether it is because they do not follow a healthy diet or they inherited it from their parents. Being overweight is correlated with lacking exercise or physical activity and not watching what is on the plate. Obesity can cause many illnesses, including diabetes, which is very common. As the debate whether soda tax should take effect arises, critics say that the tax will help those with obesity-related illnesses. What about exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle? These two factors cannot be forgotten knowing they are the most important. Americans have consumed 12 percent of soda and become less active since 1970. A soda tax aims to stop consumers from buying soda to help those who are obese. This will not be effective. Therefore a soda tax will not be good public policy.
Everyday Americans die from the diseases they carry from obesity. Many Americans over eat because their social problems or because they are hereditary. Many plans have been discussed but finding the solution is the problem. Junk foods and unhealthy beverages have corrupted children’s minds all over the nation and putting a stop on it could lead to other benefits. Unhealthy foods and drinks should be taxed and healthy foods should be advertised more to help prevent American obesity.
Soda is such a bad aspect to your daily health because of many reasons. Soda does not contain any essential nutrients needed for a healthy diet, just sugar. Soda is full of empty calories, it does not contain any vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, or fiber. It adds nothing to your diet except excessive amounts of added sugar and unnecessary calories.
The obesity epidemic is the country's most serious health issue, When walking down the street notice half of all people you may come across are overweight. This is the reason obesity is now so known because of the way people look, and the weight they put on. Obesity is common and the government wants to ban certain liquids that people drink because of the weight they gain from them, however, I believe people should be able to drink as much as they want even if weight is gained. People shouldn’t be controlled on what they drink because they are their own person, why be controlled when they have the right to drink what they want when they want. In the article “A Ban Too Far” Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York has made health his number one priority
We need to make it easy for parents to have access to healthier foods and healthier lifestyle choices for their kids. A lot of parents don’t know what they are doing to their kids and how the foods and lack of exercise is really killing their children. They need this information they need support from the hospitals. It needs to be a community effort. Knowledge is power and this information is something parents need to have and know. They need to know the alternatives to junk food, they need to know that their kids should not watch television and play games all day without doing any physical activities. Some of the strategies I like that were used by the Tobacco industry and I think can be effective with childhood obesity is marketing. Marketing through videos, print ads, and radio ads. These are great for getting your word and message out to a larger audience. This is great to help educate the masses and provide them information on how to help with childhood obesity. You see a lot of information about smoking and the dangers of smoking which is great and it’s something that make people think twice. I think community interventions like the ones used with helping adolescents reduce tobacco use will be great for obesity as well. This was done by the education programs regarding tobacco and the anti-tobacco campaigns and laws passed to help with
The United States needs to do something to change the amount of childhood obesity in the nation. If the government requires children to take classes that require physical activity, abolishes school vending machines, and teaches children about healthy eating, then the amount of children that are obese in the United States will decrease significantly. Obesity is defined as the increase of body fat over time to the point where it can impact health in a negative manner and decrease life expectancy. Since the 1980’s, obesity has increased dramatically in the United States. Children have been greatly impacted in the increase of obesity. This is a major problem as someday these obese children could possibly turn into obese adults. If the population of obese adults and children keeps increasing, than not only will our country have a lot of severely unhealthy people but the cost of health care will increase dramatically.
The situation of child obesity has been brought up on many occasions .Obesity is a very serious issue in America and it could all start from school..In many school’s around America they serve chips, juice, and candy which is also known as junk food. The food that is served in the cafeteria can be nasty , therefore students tend to buy junk food and it’s not the healthiest choice. The schools should make their lunch food better so it won’t be a major problem with the government taking junk food out of school. It would be nice if they gave students the chance to have junk food once a week but not five days of the week.Parents can also help by changing their way of eating so the child wont feel like he/she is the only person that has to deal with this.Junk food should be banned from school because it can cause obesity and cause major health problems in your adulthood.
With a little help and determination America can solve the problem of obesity and prevent future health problems by: eating healthier, encouraging physical activity, and setting limits on the consumption fast food, to provide better nutrition for the people of America.
