Sociology Odyssey

Prior to entering this course I wasn’t quite sure what sociology meant or what it studied. Entering class on the first day of the semester we discussed what sociology actually was, giving a brief overview. I have written in my notes, “Sociology - study of people, social groups, social life, culture - actions, behaviors, thoughts” (Lecture, 1/23). From this I would assume that sociology analyzes how people's lives are constructed and how we interact. When considering culture it causes me to think about where people spend their time and money, and who can afford to become more “cultured.” Culture is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as, “the act of developing the intellectual and moral faculties especially by education.” To me, I somewhat interpreted …show more content…

In Sociological Odyssey, sociology is defined as “the science of society; the scientific study of the social world and social institutions” (499). In the online textbook resource, Introduction to Sociology 2e, sociology is defined as “the study of groups and group interactions, societies and social interactions, from small and personal groups to very large groups” (6). I also wanted to get a dictionary definition that I felt most people would use as their resource. Merriam-Webster states sociology as, “ the science of society, social institutions, and social relationships; specifically : the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction, and collective behavior of organized groups of human beings.”
After having substantial knowledge and several definitions from in class lectures, class textbook resources, and the dictionary, I feel that I can somewhat construct a definition for sociology. However, I do recognize that my idea of sociology will most likely change as my knowledge of sociology and all of its aspects becomes more in
