Sociology 101 There have been many things I have learned this term in Sociology 101. The eight key points that really resonate with me from all the rest are the three sociological perspectives: Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Interactionism; Social Imagination; Stratification; Culture; Race and Ethnicity; Gender, Sex and Sexuality; Power and Authority; Disenfranchisement; and Socialism vs. Capitalism. Sociology 101 has taught me to be more self-aware of what I do in my daily activities and interactions; as my actions and verbiage can truly have an effect on others and how they perceive my character.

What is sociological imagination? C. Wright Mills, a pioneer sociologist, describes sociological imagination as an awareness of the relationship between a person’s behaviors and experience and the wider culture that shaped the person’s choices and perceptions. What does this mean exactly? It means we need to be more aware of how our experiences, along with our upbringing of our cultural norms: values, beliefs and behaviors have made us who we are today and how it relates to history and social structure. We need to always be asking ‘why?’ when we observe groups of 2 or more people. Our first sociological perspective is Functionalism. Functionalism focuses on the way each part of society functions together to contribute to the whole on a macro or mid-level of analysis; also
In this paper will be talking about the three sociological perspectives as it pertains to the fraternities and sororities in today’s world. I have chosen this topic because it can be easily understood in all three perspectives.
1 Most sociologists interpret social life from one of three major theoretical frameworks or theories: symbolic interactionism, functional analysis, or conflict theory. Describe the major points and key concepts of each framework. List at least one sociologist who is identified with each of these three frameworks.
Sociology is the study of society and the interactions that occur within society itself. There are numerous methods of analyzing societies and the way the function, nonetheless, most methods fall in micro and macro level theories. Micro level theories allow sociologist to study smaller relationships such as individual or compact groups of people. On the other hand, macro level studies permit for larger scale investigations to take place. With both of these theories there are three theoretical perspectives used in sociology. Micro level theories include symbolic interactionism which focuses in interactions done with language and gestures and the means which allow such interactions to take place. Macro level theories include structural functionalism
In 1959, C. Wright Mills released a book entitled ‘The sociological’. Imagination’. It was in this book that he laid out a set of guidelines of how to carry out social analysis of the data. But for a layman, what does the term ‘sociological imagination’ mean? actually mean.
This is the foundation of the Sociological Imagination Concept. According to C. Wright Mills, sociological imagination is developed when we can place personal problems in a social situation or environment such that they are no longer viewed solely as individual or personal problems, but instead as social problems. That is problems that are shared by enough peop...
In my words, Sociological imagination is a way for a person to look at their life as a result of their interaction with society. It can explain why a life is lived with way it is lived and all events, decisions, successes, and failures that have occurred. In my life I have encountered many situations, problems, opportunities and events. I can use my sociological imagination to examine these and figure out why I am the way I am and also why I have chosen to do certain things
There are three main types of sociological perspectives in which you can perceive different sociological issues and concepts; structural-functional, symbolic-interaction, and social conflict. Structural-functional looks at society as a whole and how it works together. Symbolic-interaction is how different symbols spark particular thoughts and emotions by examining the meanings that people impose on objects, events and behaviors. Social conflict studies how power and coercion affect social order. Based off these types of perspectives, an analysis on teen depression and suicide can be evaluated from a sociological standpoint.
Theoretical Perspective on Society The study of sociology has led to many theoretical perspectives regarding society. Theories analysis our social structure and the interactions transpiring within our society. Each aspect can provide insight on social structure and the norms for which are composed. Inequalities are evident.

The term Sociological imagination was introduced in 1959 to allow people to make more self-aware decisions. The American sociologist C. Wright Mills developed the term Sociological imagination in 1959 in an attempt to explain awareness presented by Sociology. Sociological imagination allows those within the discipline of sociology to question and answer important social commonalities anew. The outcome of our commonalities depend on norms and motives as well as the country and time period. The social context and social action which shape our values affects how people react towards us individually, or/and collectively.
1) The three sociological perspectives are structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Structural functionalism is a paradigm based on the assumption that society is a unified whole that functions because of the contributions of its separate structures (Ferris 20). Emile Durkheim believed that there were two types of solidarity; mechanical solidarity where societies bonded over culture (family, experiences beliefs), and organic solidarity which was a society bonding around a job. This perspective is viewed as a macro-sociological theory because it focuses on the larger picture. Structural functionalism is the interdependence of the societies and their ability to influence one another.
As a reflection, the sociological imagination, in broad terms, is looking at the world and social problems “sociologically.” Defined by our textbook, the sociological imagination was a term coined by C. Wright Mills. It is the ability to
Sociologists employ three major theoretical perspectives in sociology today. They are the structural-functionalist perspective, the conflict perspective, and the symbolic interactionism. The structural-functionalist perspective is done at a macro level and its focus is on the relationships between the parts of society. The Conflict perspective is done at a macro level and its main focus is on how the wealthy controls the poor and weak. Symbolic Interactionism is done at a micro and it focuses on the use of symbols and face to face interactions.
Before I started taking the course of sociology I wasn’t really expecting to learn anything, it was just supposed to be an easy online class. However, that was not the case. It challenged my mind. I started to see sociology all around me, starting with family, then friends, and how I see things overall in general. The fact that we have an everyday life in which there are patterns in ways of living is what sets a platform for a sociological breakdown and for being a part in what we do. A better way of understanding ourselves. We use sociology in many ways every day. One central and important study of sociology is the study of everyday social life. Everyday life and sociology are definitely two different words and situations, but they tend to hold a close relationship. While sociology is the study of the human interaction, everyday life consists of everyday human interaction. Everyday life is filled by human beings interacting with one another, ideas, and emotions. Sociology studies the interactions with all of these and shows how mere interaction resulted in things such as ideas. For an example, race and ethnicity are important concepts in the field of sociology and are ones that are studied a great deal. Race plays a large role in everyday human interactions and sociologists want to study how, why, and what the outcomes are of these interactions. Current sociological theories focus mainly on how there are many different factors in our everyday items of life, like movies. We were assigned a final to write a review for a movie in sociological form. The movie that was on the list that also happened to be one of my favorite movies, Toy Story. When we were assigned the assignment, I never thought about how in-depth it was with sociol...
Sociology is a study of society social life, social change, and social causes and consequences of human behaviour and allows us to gain an understanding of the structure and dynamics of today’s society, looking at the interlinking links patterns of human behaviour. Sociology looks at the in which social structure and institutions affect our everyday life. Sociological imagination was founded by C. Wright mills in the 1950`s it is an overall understanding of that some of the things that happen in society may lead to a particular outcome. Mills said it is “the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and wider society.” sociological imagination can also be defined as the ability to look at how sociological situations can unfold due to how everyone is different. The way we behave is shaped by the situation that we find ourselves in, the values and norms that we have and the way that other members of society act around us. It is also a way of thinking about how things in society have led to a particular outcome, and understanding of what led to that specific outcome. Sociological imagination is an ability to look at things socially and how they interact and influence each other gaining an understanding of different cultures and class systems.
