Alienation is a sociological term which refers to a condition between social relationships that is reflected by a low extent of common values or integration, and a high extent of isolation between individuals or a group of people in a particular society. There have been certain expressions that are associated with alienation, which include powerlessness, or the expectancy of an individual about his own behavior which cannot determine the occurrence of outcomes he seeks; meaninglessness, which is characterized by not meeting the satisfactory predictions about future outcomes of a person’s behavior; and normlessness, which denotes the situation where social norms that regulate a person’s conduct are no longer effective as rules for behavior. The first sociologist to use and study alienation is Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich (1770-1831), who served as an inspiration for Karl Marx’s theory of alienation.

Although the worker plays a big role in the manufacturing of the car, he is alienated from his labor because the auto company will sell the car and gather the profits, rather than allow him to at least keep some of the profits for himself.
