Sociologists take a unique approach when observing and evaluating social situations. According to C. Wright Mills (1959), we need to take a “sociological approach” to situations to better grasp the full meaning behind them. Mills states, “neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both.” So what is the “sociological approach?” Simply put, instead of merely focusing on a personal issue, it’s necessary to zoom out and put the entire society in the picture. The main point of the sociological approach is to look past the individual problem and instead focus on society as a whole. Mills believes, that the larger historical and social factors have a strong effect on the individual situation being analyzed (Mills, 1959). What is the public transportation system like? Do buses run frequently and in well-traveled areas? Had there been sufficient bus service, maybe the teens would have elected to take the bus instead of risking their lives behind the wheel of a vehicle. Cities such as Portland have very well developed public transportation systems that may encourage intoxicated people to take the bus rather than drive. There are countless factors that can be discussed in relation to this type of incident. The sociological perspective encourages us to observe aspects of our social surroundings in ways that explore underneath the face. As we look further than the outer appearances of our social environment, we come across new levels of reality. It is also the study of human social behavior, particularly the study of the origins, organization, institutions, and development of human society. The term Sociological Imagination was coined by C. Wright Mills and refers to seeing sociological situations from a broad point of view, going beyond one’s thoughts and feelings, and by seeing how others would see it. In the textbook Introduction to Sociology by Giddens, et al. Al Mills argued that we needed to “overcome our limited perspective. [and have] a certain quality of mind that makes it possible to understand the larger meaning of our experiences” (4). In 1959, American sociologist Charles Wright Mills wrote his influential book 'The Sociological Imagination'. In the book, Mills proposed that possibly the most assistive part of his sociological imagination theory was differentiating problems within society between 'personal troubles of the milieux' and 'public issues of social structure'.
