“Society is an organized group of persons associated together for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes” (Dictionary.com, 2015). Sociologists are interested in knowing how people from different cultures involve in other societies. They are interested in what problems people face that relate to a larger sociological perspective, from culture shock to social class. “According to C. Wright Mills, the sociological imagination in his article, The Promise, is the ability to perceive the interconnections between personal troubles of milieu and the public issues of social culture” (Mills). In this essay, I will highlight the personal problems which I had by growing up in a high class family in Pakistan. …show more content…
After that I will move forward to the opportunity which I got to study in Canada and what personal problems such as (culture shock, problems with neighbours) I faced in Canada. Lastly, I will talk about how sociological concept (Technology) impacted my life. I grow up in a High ‘Class’ family of Pakistan and I am the only child of my parents. “ Class is a number of persons or things regarded as forming a group by reason of common attributes, characteristics, qualities, or traits; kind; sort” (Dictionary.com, 2015). I came into High Class category because my father has his own business and my mother is a doctor. The salary of my father is above $500000 and the salary of my mother is $200000. My parents have inherited wealth such as we have many properties and own several hotels. My father is sometimes also invited in schools as a chief guest so that he could tell about his success to children. As nowadays we are living in modern society so the competition levels between the societies have increased. So, the personal problems which I faced living in a high class family were that when I graduated from my high school, my parents felt that I need to find a spot in Canadian universities instead of taking a gap year as they reveal that the children in the neighbourhood have all received an offer letter from top Canadian Universities. I think every parent in this world would want their children to be successful in his life but I personally think that society plays a big role in putting academic pressure over the students. I lost my childhood at an early stage of the life as my parent always pushed me to excel in my studies because they see neighbourhood children doing so good in their studies. Besides this, living in a high class family also leads to more level of opportunities for people so the opportunity which I got is to study aboard in Canada. As I have to live alone over here so the personal problems which I faced moving from Pakistan to Canada was culture shock. The timings difference in Pakistan was totally different from that of Canada. If there was morning in Pakistan then in Canada it was night. So, I usually missed my university classes because I wasn’t able to wake up in mornings and this caused my class participation to become zero. Moreover, in Pakistan people only keep birds as their pets but in Canada people usually keep dogs as their pets. So, I had complains from my neighbours because their dog use to bark every time and it was very irritating. As I can’t study in noise so one day I went to my neighbour’s house to express my complaint. I was astonished that they had also prepared a complaint about me. My neighbours explained me that the reason behind why the dog barks is because my bird used to make loud noises. Social norms are produced in this situation because norms is an established rule that governs our conduct in the situations in which we participate so in this case my neighbours and I was dissatisfied with each other choices of interest and we expressed it through actions. I think this also leads to an idea of Charles Cooley’s theory of the “Looking-glass self”, which indicates that we develop sense of ourselves based on our perceptions of how others view us. Keeping the above paragraph in mind, the society runs by how the individuals act upon any situation and how my issues demonstrated in other’s lives. I will conclude my essay with one of the sociological concepts which have biggest impact on the past decades is Technology.
“Technology is the purposeful application of information in the design, production, and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities” (BusinessDictionary.com, 2015). The introduction of new electronics in the household for example iPad, television and computers has changed the daily functioning of the Family. Technology has also impacted my personal life because the introduction of new advanced technological products has kept me away from the social circle of the family. Introduction of PlayStation 4 or Computers is so addictive that I usually spent like 16 hours over it and in that 16 hours’ time period, I have no communication skills with my family. I also believe that in past, as there was less distraction so there was a quality of life through socializing with family. However, in modern world, the family structure is destroyed by the rise of technology. Besides this, technology has bad impact on children because once I played the gangster game with my little brother and he liked the personality of the gangster so much that he started acting as that gangster and used bad language. “As mentioned in sociological imagination; The Promise by C. Wright Mills, most people only can focus of what is directly in front of them”
(Mills).
One of the sociological theories is conflict theory. The conflict theory deals with people's level on wealth, or class. The conflict theory says that social change is beneficial, contrary to focuses on social order. In the story of the woman and her children, the conflict theory plays a big role on the situation. Police of higher class are threatening the homeless woman. The conflict theory is a constant struggle of people of higher class over powering people of lower class, or the weaker. The police are trying to over power the woman by telling her to leave. Even though the woman and her children were doing nothing wrong, the police used their power to tell her to leave. Also the people of the area showed their conflict theory by telling the police officers to come. They must have felt embarrassed to have a woman of such lower class to be around them. They used their power of class to have the woman removed from their community. The woman wants to be there because she has no home and it is a good community to be in, but the people look at it as an embarrassment to them because it makes their area look bad for someone of such lower class to be around them. The conflict theory is unique to all other theories because it separates people into categories determined by their wealth and standards. Their status is the element that categorizes them, weather it is class, race, or gender. The conflict theory do not always use class, race, and gender all at once. In this situation race and gender is not a main issue, although gender could be a reason, but it would fall under the feminist theory. This story is mainly dealing with class. Through all this conflict the woman feels over powered and domina...
Technology is one of the most important things in everyone’s life. Technology improves every day. in regards to today’s youth, they were born with all the new technological inventions as opposed to our parents. In “Quality Time, Redefined” by Alex Williams, published in the New York Times, the author talks about the positive and negative effects on technology. I enjoyed this reading because it related my personal day to day life. Even though some Americans acknowledge that technology is a part of their everyday life, they do not see the negative outcome of technology, they are blinded only by the positive aspects.
Sociological Theory To be able to evaluate Functionalism, Marxism and Interactionism we must first look at the strengths and weaknesses in each. There are many variations and interpretations of each of these theories, therefore for the sake of simplicity only the key ideals will be discussed. Functionalism looks at society as an organized structure of inter-related institutions; and the various ways these institutions interact together within a social structure. Examples of these 'institutions' are the family, work, education and religion.
The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.
The standard 21 year old adults have exchanged 250 thousand emails, spent 5 thousand hours video gaming and 10 thousand hours using their mobile devices (Lei, 2009). When people hear the word technology, they think of microwaves, televisions, cars, NASA, different types and transportation and more. For all that, technology has occurred long ahead these discoveries. Technology is an arguable matter amongst people. .In the old days, people lived an extremely simple life without technology. They used candles to light their houses and lanterns at the dark to travel, they used fire to cook and used newspapers and mail to share news. On the other hand, technology has seized an important place in our society. People are living in a stage of progressive technology. They are using all natural reserves applicable for making their lives better and easier. The society cannot picture life without electricity since it allows them to live through their everyday life. This paper argues that technology positively impacts people’s lives.
I’ve decided to do my term paper on option C. I have many acquired skill sets and values, although I consider the fact that I speak fluent Italian and my athleticism valuable skill sets and norms that I have acquired through nature and nurture. Many of agents of socialization such as: friends, school and family play an important role in my physical and psychological development. That being said, my essay will typically talk about how I have obtained these skills by looking at the sociological concepts (nature and nurture) and the role of those specific agents of socialization.
Technology has more negative effects on today’s society than positive. Due to technology in the past few decades Canine Shock Collars have been increasingly popular. Students in school pay more attention to texting than they do their classes. Violent addictive video games have made their way into American homes. Parents encourage their children to not text as much, but them to face the problem of constant communication. The Internet gives the students easier ways to cheat in school, and reinforces laziness. Internet Porn gives every bored male a chance to look at the seediest film in the comfort of his own home. Technology has taken the innocence and mystery away from the American family.
Technology, mainly computers, electronic devices, and video games, have made a vast difference in our society, especially on families. Many years ago, there were not very many models of technology that existed. Technology has gone from being a decent tool to children and parents to being a bad impact on families and on society. Not only is it insulting the intelligence of many young adults, but also has shaken up plenty of life’s routines. “But for many people it has completely altered the once predictable rituals at the start of the day” (Stone Brad, 2009). Although, some people disagree and estimate technology has made a positive impact and helps families. In most ways, technology actually has a negative impact on families because it causes alleviation in social behavior, takes away knowledge, and technology is destructive.
In conclusion, modern technology makes our life more convenient. It has advantages and disadvantages but there are so much more advantages. It is up to us to know what we use technology for, what kind of life we want to live and how to raise our children to technology. Technology makes children their schoolwork easier through the unlimited network. People do not need to travel too often for their work, but business can be done via Skype, and the most important is that everything we do not know easily can be learned from the internet too. Technology is developing fast and there is no way turning back the time. As a tip for parents most likely, since they are the ones ‘’the future’’ : try to interest your children into socializing face to face with people, to read books more often and to go out and explore the nature with friends and family.
I think that technology has had both positively and negatively impacted the family life in our society. But I think the positive effects out way the negative ones. In this term paper I will focus on how cell phones, internet, and home security systems. These are only a few of the technology that has affected family life. I will first talk about the positive effects then I will explain the negative effects.
Social networking changed from writing letters and sending through postal services versus electronic mail through various websites. Researching through internet has become easier through accessing the World Wide Web versus research through index cards and reading books. The effect of information technology today is unbelievable, the consequences information technology has on people, relationships, children, jobs and so many more. People are so dependent upon technology that we cannot live without information technology. . Everybody has cell phones, tablets, iPad’s, laptops, compared to back in the day where everything was done manually. Back in the day there were only house phones and that was the only way people communicated with each other. But now, nobody really uses house phones. Most people don’t even have house phones anymore. Everyone in the household most likely has cell phones, tablets, and laptops; that can be helpful to communicate with each other. Information technology has been helpful but hurtful in some ways especially when pertaining to children. In today’s world almost every child has a tablet, iPod, etc. and even cell phones. Information technology is affecting the way children are
Technology use was on the rise but has shown a significant increased rate in recent years. Technology was a beneficial tool that was used on a daily basis. Technology industries had developed many devices like computers, laptops, smartphones, iPods, and many other devices that made technology easier to access from anywhere and anytime. Technology expanded every day and the usage increased which had an effect on society especially targeting teens. Teens abused the use of technology that caused them to have serious problems mentally and physically. Teens mainly focused on technology use and caused a social disconnection from the real world. Technology use has a negative effect on teens by causing health problems and social disconnection.
Technology undoubtedly simplifies our lives and makes everyday tasks easier. There are many effects that technology has on today’s generation in which it replaces some forms of social interactions, and enhances our digital lives. Attachment and dependence often develop between the user and the device, and some may find that they are unable to complete tasks requiring basic skills without the use of technology. In conclusion today’s generation should utilize technology to enhance rather than replace knowledge and social interactions, and rather than be dependent on technology use it as a tool to get the most benefits from it.
Over the last few decades, technology has greatly increased its abilities. It started from the simple radio to now having cell phones which can surf the web. Technology has greatly influenced our society in many ways. Nowadays it has made family relationships have a different connection and has simplified people’s lives. A couple decades ago, a person would never had imagined to Skype a family member across the world. It would be like trying to imagine teleportation. It was unthinkable, but with moderation, technology has evolved for the better. With the new technology in our world, people are able to talk to their distant family members. People are also able to save time and watch a movie with their extra time. There are pros and cons to having technology nowadays. Yes, people are able to communicate faster and save money, but technology is also disconnecting them from the people around them. Technology has changed humanity for the better, but humans must know to use technology in moderation.
Society has been impacted both negatively and positively by technology. As a result, every aspect of our lives has been influenced by technology. Hence, life is easier, yet it has taken away some of the enjoyment. For example, remember the days of less stress and more personal interaction, when there were no online messages, no emails, social media or cell phones. We have become excessively dependent on technology. As a result, we need to rely less on technology even though it has made learning fun, and business, daily tasks, work, travel, shopping, making new friends and staying in touch easier. In conclusion, technology has a lot of benefits, yet it could take over our lives and become our worst enemy if we aren't careful.
