Sociodramatic play is where a child recreates certain events or situations seen or experienced in the infant’s personal life. From this type of play, children learn from past and pick up the kind of amusement for oneself from his/her surroundings. When we came together with ideas for what text we wanted to use to inspire our performance, we ended up with about 10 ideas. Fairy tales, Edgar Allen Poe, Dr. Seuss, and urban legends had all been thrown out as ideas, but the play we chose was is a much lesser known greek play named, Casina. Casina, looking through one lens, is a comedy about two men fighting over a woman. Through a different lens, Casina is a power struggle between husband and wife and seeing which of the two will win over the other.

Over the years, people have not socially recognized gay rights around the world. They are constantly looked down upon based on their sexual orientation. The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman is a play about the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The play follows Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theater Project’s journey on their interviews in the town. The reactions in Laramie, Wyoming show that the people struggle with treating gays as equals in their community. This is shown through the personalities of the interviewees, their morality of how gays should be treated, and gay former residents’ opinions of the town.
Theorists help us to learn about play and help us progress in relation to approaches and future planning. Vygotsky believed that imaginative play and relationships are important in relation to a child’s learning, and his theory was called the social constructivist theory. He believed that through play a ‘zone of proximal development’ is created, in which a child’s learns at the height of their potential. He argued against Piaget’s theory. Piaget argued that children did not necessarily learn through play but play just showcases and applies what they have already learnt. Piaget’s theory stated that there was two aspects to play – sensory and movement play and imagination, pretend and symbolic play. Cosi was a play about an up and coming director who was given the opportunity to direct a show that would be put on by patients in a mental institution. Lewis, the director, did not seem too excited about the opportunity but he takes on the job and works hard. The play is set in the 1970’s during anti-Vietnam war protests in Sydney, Australia. The acting in Cosi was at a variety of different skill levels. Since the play was set in Australia, the actors were using Australian accents which was distracting at times because that is a difficult accent to be able to pull off. I was impressed by the believability of the actress who played Ruth, confused by the goals of the character Lewis, and intrigued by the character Roy.
As Søren Kierkegaard once said, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward.” I agree with Kierkegaard because our lives reveal who we were through our past and who we can be in the future. Likewise, some directors base their plot on this principle, but through the use of plot devices. Through reading and actually going to see the live play production of The importance of Being Earnest at Savanna’s Children Theater, I was able to get an understanding of the characters, hearing the dialogue and seeing their interactions. However, through watching the movie, the character’s personality was better understood through the use of plot devices. The criteria that seems to be the building blocks to the foundation of characterization in The Importance of Being Earnest includes flashbacks and daydreams. These plot devises combined give a clearer understanding of the characters which allows the audience to see things from the character perspective that you wouldnt’t have access to in the play.
Play is such an important part of the learning and growing, especially for children. Children engage in many different types of play, but the play I saw the most when I observe the children of my daycare is sociodramatic play. The book Understanding Dramatic Play by Judith Kase-Polisini defines sociodramatic play as “both players must tacitly or openly agree to act out the same drama” (Kase-Polisini 40). This shows that children play with each other and make their worlds together as equal creators. Children also work together without argument.
The Laramie Project written by Moisés Kaufman and the Members of Tectonic Theater Project is a play about Matthew Shepard, a twenty-one-year-old student at the University of Wyoming who was killed and tied up to a fence in Laramie, Wyoming during October 1998. Unlike most plays, this was written very differently, but the result was breathtaking. Besides reading this play, I have also been an actor in this show. This play has really affected me throughout the years, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it once again.
Play is frequently used to asses cognitive and social development because it is cost-effective, can lead to direct interventions, and can be used to supervise progress. (Kelly-Vance & Ryalls, 2008) According to Blakemore, Berenbaum, and Liben (2009) cognitive development can be assessed by cognitive- environmental and developmental- constructivist approaches. Cognitive- environmental refers to the influence that parents and peers have in modeling gender appropriate behaviors. Developmental- constructive refers to the process that children use to create their own concepts of gender and gender-appropriate behaviors.
Play directly influences how children develop both emotionally and socially. Children learn how to express their emotions and cope with their feelings as they experiment with different characters in their play. Play gives children a “harmless outlet to their built up aggression” (CHETN). This is displayed when a child becomes angry, upset, or stressed about a situation in their lives; these young children may not be old enough or have the proper communication tools to communicate what they are feeling. Therefor they may choose to play with objects that depict the emotions that they are feeling and attempt to cope. Simply said, a child will use play to explain how they are feeling rather than acting out in a negative fashion (Wehrman 351). George Herbert Mead is a philosopher who coined the theory Genesis of the self. Mead, believes " the self develops through contact with others." Play Stage, as defined by George Ritzer is, "the first stage in the genesis of the self in which a child plays at being someone else." In play a child is acting out that of a role model in their life. Such example may include dressing up as parents, teachers, doctors, construction workers, police officers and so on. In an article called Genesis of the Self and Social Control by George Herbert Mead, it states "the child is acquiring the roles of those who belong to his society." This simply means, the child is imitating the roles of people around him/her in society and is putting themselves in place of those who fulfill this role hoping to imagine, and achieve them. According to the genesis of the self, play stage begins with simple gestures and gradually moves up in difficulty to running away when being chased or using symbols to interact. The different role playing a child goes through is what I am trying to symbolize with these pictures. Children learn, grow, act, and communicate through play. A child learns the way the world operates, by attempting to assume a role of an adult. Such examples may include play with a doll and dress up, which demonstrates a motherly roll. I think the first thing that becomes more difficult to do in a musical then in a straight play is the casting. Musicals can require hiring a larger cast and a bigger artistic panel, which can be good or bad thing. The good thing about a larger group of people is that you get to work with a variety of unique talents and this can also allow directors to try more artist direction on stage. The bad thing is that with a larger group it can also mean artist butting heads which can cause tension in rehearsal and make for a long show. Then when you start to cast the show you have to look for actors that not only have the look the director envisions for the part, but also who can sing and dance.
The Differences and Similarities Between Plays Plays express different plots, yet authors use similar writing methods to convey a particular point. For example, one play discusses serious matters, while another play has a comedic tone. However, both plays use physical movement to represent a character’s mood. Death Knocks, Fly, and Our Town are three very different plays with different themes, yet these plays use a lot of similar writing styles. Between the three plays Death Knocks, Fly, and Our Town, I believe Fly uses the most physical movement.
