Fiona Apple once said, “I've gone through stages where I hate my body so much that I won't even wear shorts and a bra in my house because if I pass a mirror, that's the end of my day.” Teenagers become influenced by society’s unattainable body standards. People think that to be beautiful, they must look exactly how society wants them to. Media enforces society’s beauty standards and influenced how teenagers view themselves. Body image in the media has led teenagers to have low self-confidence, transform their appearance, and develop eating and mental disorders. These disorders dramatically transform the physical and mental health of an individual, and if taken to extremes can lead to death. The “perfect body” consists of a thin frame with minimal body fat, which is an unrealistic body for individuals. Society tells people that to be beautiful, they need to be thin with only a slight amount of body fat. The standards that society has implemented has led people to take intense measures. Individuals do things such as starve themselves or purge, which is the clearing the stomach of food eaten earlier. They develop eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia to lose weight until they have no fat. Along with eating disorders, people also establish mental disorders, which are psychological diseases resulting in a change in behavior patterns. Society has enforced their beauty standards onto teenagers, leading them to become self conscious and develop diseases such as depression and anxiety. Teenagers may become depressed as a result of seeing ridiculously thin models. They may put themselves down and begin to focus on their flaws. This is because they feel as if they don’t follow the ideals of society. They may feel as if they don’t fit in with those around them, leading them to feel isolated. Isolation can ultimately cause the feeling of loneliness leading to depression. They may also become anxious, a feeling of worry or unease. Individuals may not feel comfortable in their own bodies and may be constantly retouching themselves to look their best for others, they often fix their makeup, or check themselves in mirrors so that they can look ideal for others. This is because they are always worried about how others perceive them. Eating and mental disorders are dangerous and harmful to the bodies of people.
