“Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness,” is what the United States was founded on. On July 4th, 1776 The Declaration of Independence was signed by the founding fathers, they promised citizens the right and the ability to accomplish and possess anything one sets their minds to. Consequently, from 1947 to 1991 the United States showed its dedication towards its values and by fighting Communism in order to destroy the ideology of a classless society. Unlike the United States’ capitalist economy, which was created with the goal of allowing each person the chance to rise to the top based on their accomplishments, in communism regardless of how much effort a one puts forth, one will always be on the same socioeconomic level as everyone else. “An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by the free people for profit, rather than by the state.”.Although modern economists state that capitalism is “the most successful economic system that has existed thus far”, there are multiple political systems by which other countries are governed. Socialism and Communism are both political and economic systems that govern and have been utilized by countries such as Vietnam, North Korea, the Soviet Union, Cuba and China. Although the United States has been at peace with many Socialist countries, it has fought long and hard against Communist states. Communism is the economic, political, and social system that was formed based on the idea of “the common ownership of the means of production and the absence of social classes, money, and the state. In communist countries the free people are all equal in class due to the lack of social classes and money. Yet the government officials are above the free people because they are the ones monitoring and controlling the people and developing new laws. This reveals the paradox with the communist ideology of there being a lack of social classes when the government in these countries tend to be a separate social class within itself as they control the free people. Like George Orwell says in his critical novel Animal Farm which addressed the many problems that stem from communism, “all animals are created equal but some are more equal than other.” In contrast, the United States is a governing state that was erected based on the idea that every person has the right to “Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness,” and by there being parameters and restrictions put on the free people, the United States begins losing its status as a Capitalist country. In 1918, while the rest of Europe was still engaged in World War I, a newly formed communist government was developing in Russia. Much like 18th century Americans, they had just managed to overthrow what was viewed as a tyrannical government and hoped to form a new nation free of the injustices of the previous rule. Both countries wrote a new constitution as well as a declaration of rights to facilitate this, but their respective documents had vast differences. These disparities stemmed from differences in the ideologies of the new governments. The primary objectives of the Russian Declaration of Rights of the Working and Exploited People and the later constitution were the “abolition of all exploitation of man by man, complete elimination of the division of society into classes, merciless suppression of the exploiters, socialist organization of society, and victory of socialism in all countries.” Americans wanted equality of opportunity and personal freedom instead of the social equality desired by the Russians. The American constitution and Bill of Rights were created to protect personal liberties and individual freedom while the Russians were more concerned with the welfare and equality of the population as a whole. This difference is partially due to the differences in the conditions leading to revolution in each country. The American Revolution was initiated by the wealthy in response to what they considered unfair treatment by a foreign ruler while the Russian revolution was instigated by the poor in reaction to centuries of oppression and exploitation by the wealthy within their own country.
Though the rewards are pleasing to the ear, the path to obtaining the benefits of communism is a violent one. This strict governing idea was derived from Communist Manifesto, a book written by two German economists, Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels, who declare that many problems in society are caused by the unequal distribution of wealth. These two believe that “Communism deprives no man of the ability to appropriate the fruits of his labour. The only thing it deprives him of is the ability to enslave others by means of such appropriations.” To achieve the goal of happiness and prosperity for all, the lines that distinguish the differences between the rich and poor must be erased. Obviously, the rich will never voluntarily give up their goods or status; therefore the figureheads must force equality among the citizens. Communism places their citizens, whether they be the wealthy or the laborers, into working classes that specify their contribution to the government. With such balanced placement of the people, individuality is impossible for any single person to achieve.
Ironically, Communism has never existed anywhere. There has never been a system implemented in our entire history by which a society has been utterly classless. Communism would be a type of egalitarian society with no state, no privately owned means of production and no social class (Wikipedia). Today there is a selection of “Communist” states that exist in a variety of locations on our globe. Sadly, all of the claimed Communist states including the late Soviet Union were and are despicable and corrupted examples of the idea of Communism. By using Stalin as an example it is quite possible to portray to the reader a simple and effective example of the flip side of attempted Communism. Stalin took control of a weak government and crafted an illusionary Communist state. Ironically, Stalin had set himself up as the dictator of a completely totalitarian society. By using the people of Russia, he was able to harness the government and use it for his own needs. This is quite similar to 1984 with the concept of Big Brother. Although Big Brother is not a person, the inner society that controls “him” creates a Stalinist nation; this was quite purposefully included by Orwell.
The Communist Manifesto was published in 1848, a period of political turmoil in Europe. Its meaning in today’s capitalistic world is a very controversial issue. Some people, such as the American government, consider socialism taboo and thus disregard the manifesto. They believe that capitalism, and the world itself, has changed greatly from the one Marx was describing in the Manifesto and, therefore, that Marx’s ideas cannot be used to comprehend today’s economy. Others find that the Manifesto highlights issues that are still problematic today. Marx’s predicative notions in the Communist Manifesto are the key to understanding modern day capitalism.
American political culture emphasizes the values of liberty, equality, and democracy. Most of America’s debating is not over whether these issues are important, but how to best go about achieving these ideas. American’s define liberty as freedom, but America believes that liberty should be contained on some levels so they can create a stable society. The definition of freedom is that we can do whatever we want, as long as we do not affect another person’s freedom. American’s want to be able to do what they want, while not affecting someone else. So some rules are set to protect people and create a stable society.
America, throughout the ages, has always despised Communism and Communistic beliefs; however, during the 20s to around the 90s, there was a deeper hatred for Communism and a fear that lingered in most Americans’ hearts. Communism is a political theory that was derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. Both socialism and democratic socialism overlap and interact with a few different ideologies. The most notable are the intersection between democratic socialism and liberalism. Both liberals and social democrats advocate for a relatively large welfare state, in order to take care of the poor and offer a social safety net. Both ideologies also believe in a sort of collective responsibility to society. They believe the purpose of people is greater than just the individual. Socialism and Liberalism also both see flaws in capitalism and have strategies to address them. Whether it’s replacing them or preventing the downsides.

Orwell wanted to make political writing into an art and to harmonize political concerns with artistry. As he became inspired by the Russian Revolution he wanted to show how some governments would do almost anything it took to succeed the rest. The book itself has acquainted many by providing a basis to describe the problems of communism as it was once tried in Russia during the 20th century. We have a deeply marked example in the history of Soviet Communism, where many were slaughter to only satisfy one person, Stalin. I believe George Orwell created Animal Farm with the goal of showing people that there is not a pure form of communism and to realize the mass amount of time, effort, energy, and lives it took for people (or animals) to realize that communism (animalism) would not succeed. In Animal Farm Orwell verified the moral economic failure of the Russian Communist system.
American freedom has faced many tribulations, especially throughout the slavery, segregation, and women’s suffrage eras. However, the ideological belief of individual freedom has always triumphed. From when the first Pilgrim stepped onto American soil to the present day America has been run by a democracy and the freedom that system of government allows its peoples to have. “Americans share a common identity grounded in the freedom — consistent always with respecting the freedom of others — to live as they choose” (Friedman).

Communism and Socialism are different economic views that were adopted by two very different countries. In the allegorical book “Animal Farm”, the author George Orwell portrayed the similarities of communism on an “Animal Farm” to Russia, under the rule of Joseph Stalin. Orwell used animal characters on the farm to represent particular members of the Russian society. One example is Napoleon, one of the pigs in the book, whom was the ruler of the “Animal Farm”, and was the character that represented Stalin. Orwell used each character in the book to show readers the flaws of communism, and sent the message that if citizens do not take an active role in contributing to society they will crumble. The characters in the book coined their way of living as “Animalism”, which is Communism in animal terms. Every character written portrayed the failures of Stalin’s reign, and showed the readers that if you take the good in society and ignore the bad, eventually people will begin to see the world they love fall apart around them.

If one looks at liberty and individual freedom, it is evident that command economies tend to oppress their citizens. Therefore, socialism, which allows for basic needs to be met and personal freedoms to be upheld, is the best economic system for all of a country’s citizens. Market economies, as a whole, inherently and inevitably lead to poverty and a large class disparity. In a capitalist society, the ones who supply labor, the ones who work the hardest, are the ones who are paid the least. The owners, who are already rich, receive most of the profit and accumulate large masses of wealth.
