Knowledge and Skills
The most meaningful things I learned in this course are keeping confidentiality, self-assessing, not imposing my beliefs on clients, and helping them to my fullest ability, just to name a few. I developed a knowledge of what it means to be a social worker. Social workers are able to use knowledge and intervention techniques effectively in a professional manner. Social workers should be able to communicate in a professional manner and assess clients’ problems. The knowledge to provide clients with reliable resources is an important aspect of being a social worker. (Cournoyer, 2010)

Authenticity means social workers are genuine and sincere in their work. It is also a valuable skill social workers utilize to help clients. The workbook explored different types of situations and settings a social worker benefits from by being authentic. It also explored the skills needed to perform the job professionally. Professionalism is also a role social workers must take on. Going over a client’s family history, can reveal patterns, and relationships formed among a family. It is a visual tool used to asses or track behaviors and problems throughout a client’s family.
Self-understanding and self-control are also tools I will utilize. Self-understanding and self-control will help me stay focused on my client needs. They will help me make decisions based on the wellbeing of my client and not on what I think is right for them. Really, listening to my clients and hearing what they have to say, will help me in this area. Learning about self-understanding and self-control requires reflection on my thoughts and reasoning. Understanding myself will allow me to understand my client’s. Not maintaining self-control will interfere with the quality of service I can provide to my client. Self-understanding and self-awareness will also continue the utilization and maintenance of professionalism.
Utilizing integrity will always be one of the most important things in developing my skill as a social worker. Helping clients will mean maintaining their most personal information. I must preserve honesty, trustworthiness and my person character.
