While making my sophomore year schedule, I was certain that I wanted to take the class called Foundations of Social Work. I just transferred to the University of Vermont and enrolled in the social work major without knowing much about the career or major. At my previous school, I was a double major in criminology and psychology, but I wanted to help others in the way social workers did. As I was new to the social work major, I thought it was imperative to take this class in order for me to better understand the major and the career I would be diving into. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this class, whether it would be the history of social work, or the various jobs of social work, or possibly the beginnings of practicing social work skills. I was excited to just expand my knowledge about this amazing profession. For my start of the semester letter, I wrote about why I want to be a social worker. I was hoping throughout the semester, this class would only strengthen that drive within me. My letter said, “I’m interested in social work because I want to help others through difficult times. I think social workers play an important role in society as advocates and are essential because they can have the resources to try to fix injustices that happen to people less fortunate. I want to defend young child, families and the elderly who don’t have the skills and resources to advocate for themselves”. I didn’t have very may expectations for this course, but my only hope was that it would strengthen my passion for helping others and to become a future social worker.
