Personal Statement My interest in social work could date back to senior middle school. When seeing the news reporting primary school students’ life in Guizhou, I found that I have been blessed and I wanted to give back. I tried to persuade all the students and teachers to join in donation organized by me to collect clothes and books for children there, while everyone was busying preparing for the University Entrance Examination. I made up my mind to work on it and call for more help. Only when I specialized in Social Work in my undergraduate, did I understand how it could realize my expectations in a systematic manner. I believe something must be done to ensure everyone can enjoy equal, high quality policies. Thus, I participated as a volunteer in an empowering seminar to prompt people with disability in Hong Kong to fight for their right of employment. As far as I am concerned, government should step in when disadvantaged people fail to live decently. People could live a better life with policies established by the government, and as a social worker, that’s what I want to achieve. In the process of practice, I could find what I have learned is far from enough to realize my thoughts of rendering back. Therefore, I choose Master of Social Work degree at Brown School of Washington University in St. Louis, one of the top schools of social work in the US. It aims to lead the creation and application of research in social work, which is consistent with my idea to acquire knowledge that is applicable to a wide array of field. Also, Brown school specializes in policy, which is my interest area for my future career. Moreover, given that one of the concentrations of Brown School is native Americans, I can learn about a new community which I have never worked with before and further my understanding on cultural diversity. I can choose my practicum sites too, which allows me to focus on the area relating to my future career plan. Furthermore, I am attracted by the energy and excellence of the faculty, the diversity and commitment of students, and the extraordinary resources of School and Washington University, I believe this is a good fit for my educational
