As a psychology major, I have always been interested in the mental processes of individuals. Another aspect that has always peaked my interest is why. Why do people act the way they do and make the decisions that they make? With social work, I am given the chance to analyze their environmental influences on their mental state and am more likely to answer that why question. Not only that, but I can find solutions for those individuals. While assisting my clients I will be able to make them feel empowered, gain their independence, assist them in taking back their lives, and helping them become functional members of society again. When speaking of nature versus nature it is apparent that, within studies, the biological aspect does play a role …show more content…
With social work, I am given the opportunity work with clients of all different races, ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, genders, ages, and all of the links between these that intersectionality creates. This has led me to the path of social work. With my MSW I will be able to gain my LCSW in the states of Virginia and West Virginia where I plan on working as a Family Therapist. While working within this micro level my goal is to help restore a functional family dynamic. By doing this, I will also be giving each individual the means to thrive and the feeling of empowerment in the role that they play within their family as well as their role they play in society as the unique and multidimensional human being that they are. I will be able to provide the skills needed to assist in the reestablishment of a healthy relationship between partners, a new-found respect between parent and child, and create an environment in which healthy communication can be developed and …show more content…
After deciding that a Master of Social Work was my goal for graduate school, I looked into internships for my last semester of my undergraduate studies. I applied for a position through the Women’s Resource Center at the Children’s Cornerstone Program but was unfortunately told that the positions had already been filled. Another instance where I put effort into getting experience was my summer before transferring to Radford University. During the summer of 2016 I applied for a position through the Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board as a Mental Health – New Beginnings Residential Technician. I attended my interview and had to turn the offer down due to them needing me to come in from Radford University every weekend to work the night-shift. I want to make it known that, although my degree has not required it, I have made an effort to get experience to prepare me for the field of Social Work. Although unsuccessful in those two aspects, I have been successful in other situations. I have been able to complete the class known as Introduction to Social Work so that I have some experience in the dynamics of how the profession functions. I have learned about the NASW Code of Ethics, the levels of macro, mezzo, and micro and the roles that a social worker takes on within each level, and what it truly means to be a social worker. A social worker is there to provide
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
The Masters degree of Social Work (MSW) is a degree that defines who you are and where you are going career-wise. If you are getting a Masters Degree in social work you are most likely going into the field of social work. This deems the question of why I want to go into the specific field of social work. A main reason for me to go into the field of social work is that social work fits my set of values moreso than any other field I am qualified for. Social work is a profession inherently about helping people improve their lives. That kind of work is noble and something I would like to do for the rest of my life. I have always wanted to do things and have a career that would help people and empower their lives. I believe helping people is the only way I can have a clear conscience and sleep well at night. My personal values center around helping people but also about helping people help themselves and improve their own lives. I do not want to treat people who utilize social work services as charity cases or as victims. That is not fair to those people and strips them of their humanity. I hope I can utilize my career as a social work to do as much good as possible in the United States and in the world.
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. I am aware, prepared and committed to devoting my time towards my studies at Fordham University as well as taking advantage of all the necessary resources that Fordham University has to offer. My personal, academic and profession experience has given me the opportunity

Sharing knowledge and educating is a boundless way to make an impact and promote resilience within the
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my main area of interest is in providing resources and encouragement for individuals with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every possible effort in assisting these individuals with finding the means to satisfy their needs.
I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. I also believe strongly that people are inherently good and capable of doing good. All together, through different day to day experiences and my drive to do good and help facilitate change are just some of the reasons I am applying to a professional degree of social
The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. In these younger years with the assistance of my parents, my love for others allowed me to help other teenagers in crisis, often providing shelter, advice, monetary assistance and a listening
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
My reasons for wanting to become a Social worker are quite varied, the main one being to assist people in realising their potential and helping them reach their goals, and at this stage of my life I believe the experiences I have gained are extremely transferable in terms of working with the general public; but overall I can now offer the Social work profession and its clients a committed and caring attitude. I am a people’s person. I am passionately interested in listening to people’s problems and finding strategies to help solve them.
Social work practice has become a vital part of our society. They are found in almost every aspect of our community as well as our schools. Social workers are problem solvers that help people deal with daily issues that may become problems that affect them. As our society becomes more challenging, social workers help bridge the gaps for people who face extraordinary challenges in their lives. The social worker’s scope of practice may contain helping at risk or overwhelmed individuals find resources, develop new coping strategies, resolve problems and conflicts, and secure opportunities to improve their quality of life. (Flynn, 2013) Although the scope of practice is basically the same, there are various types of social workers with various levels of education. It doesn’t matter if you are a medical, clinical, school, military, psychiatric or community social worker, the goal is
I want to obtain my bachelor’s degree and secure a job as a direct social worker. This will allow me to gain experience and broaden my knowledge in the field of social work. As a direct social worker, I will be able to work with children, adults and families. I will be able to also work with people in crisis to include child abuse, rape and domestic violent cases. All this experience will help me determine exactly what field I want to specialize in as I further my education. While working as a direct social worker, I am going back to school to obtain my master’s degree. Ultimately, I want to obtain a master’s degree and go into the clinical setting. Once I earn my master’s degree, I want to immediately start working under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker to obtain the hours I need to take the state exam. Once I pass the state exam I will apply for my license to advance in my career. Eventually I want to be an advocate for the social justice of

I have always wanted to make an impact on our world and be a leader in my generation, and social work is where my personal skill set and strengths will be best put to use. As the last 4 years in my undergraduate studies have rolled along, I have developed my unique, personal traits alongside brilliant minds belonging to the future social workers of America. Many of which plan on going right out into the field and using their degrees to make an immediate impact in their local communities. For me, I would love the opportunity to further hone my
