Social Work Personal Statement

Throughout life there has been many factors that have lead me to select social work as a major. I have always had the desire to help others. In virtue of this I have become the friend and family member individuals come to for advice or, simply just a listening ear. I first realized my true desire for social work when I became friends with someone at school who was being abused. Being stuck in a situation where she didn’t want me to expose the things she was experiencing at home was very hard. Experiencing one of my close friends being physically, mentally and emotionally abused and not being able to do anything about it made me decide to be one of the individuals to keep this from happening to anybody else. Through the experiences and volunteering I am gaining some of these skills. I have been a volunteer at a retirement home located in Tarboro, NC by the name of The Fountains at the Albemarle. I’ve also recently volunteered at the Salvation Army in Greensboro, NC. At both locations I volunteered at I learned many different things about the companies and who they benefit the most. The Fountains at the Albemarle was a place for elder people to experience the great quality of life experiences they offer on a daily basis. It was a joy to experience the elder people enjoying their selves and seeing the different people from nonprofit programs come in and participate in programs with the residents. The Salvation Army was a great experience by learning more about resources which is very important with social work. My support system consists of my mother who has minimum income and my father who is inconsistent. I have a very small family and we are not as close as we should be. The summer before I left for college I lost my grandmother and that took a toll on my support system and suddenly. Soon after I decided that I would not use that as an excuse but I would use it as motivation to work harder and so far it has been successful. Growing up in a single parent home with one brother and one sister was not the worst but I have always wanted better for us. I am the first in my intermediate to go to college and I plan to make them proud by being the first to graduate as well. Although my support system is not where I want it to be I plan to continue with a positive mind and heart. I am a highly motivated individual and I believe that have many strengths. I am very passionate about helping individuals and I am open to learn new things daily. Throughout life I have always been a positive person and I will always find the light of every situation. Besides being the helpful and dedicated individual I am, I do have flaws and can use growth in some areas. One area that I could use growth in is time management. I can be a bit of a procrastinator at times and that is not good at all. I plan to make deadlines for myself ahead of due dates so that they will already be
