I am passionate about becoming a social worker as I seek to help those in positions of vulnerability, oppression, and marginalization. Since I was young I have noticed injustice around me and have wanted to help in some way. When I began college I knew nothing about social work, but after attending a majors fair and doing personal research I found a degree that fit my desire to help others. Since beginning the social work program at Texas State I have grown in my passion to be a change agent in peoples lives and to be an advocate for those who go unheard. As a future social worker, I am excited about having the opportunity to help clients discover and utilize their strengths, as well as provide them with resources, counseling, and education to further aid them in improving their lives. I am interested in this because I care deeply about others and want to make a positive impact on the world. Going forward I plan to peruse a Master’s of Social Work, and then become a medical social worker in a hospital setting. I have limited experience working in the medical field, but I believe this is an area I will enjoy working in and one in which I can apply social work skills and knowledge to assist patients. Although I am excited about this type of work, I am also open to other experiences and …show more content…

I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.

I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
