Living under government oppression since I was a child, the seed of advocating for the vulnerable and those who have been unfairly treated has been deeply planted in my heart. My education and work experiences have further strengthened my faith that pursuing Ph.D. degree in Social Work is the most effective way to achieve my career goals. My life story and education and work histories outlined below will provide evidence of my qualifications and strong motivation. The first eight years of my life, I lived only with my mother. It was not because my parents were divorced or my father left the family, but because I am a second born child. Due to the one-child policy, when my mother was pregnant with me, she had to quit her job and separate from …show more content…
As a victim of the one-child policy, I am well aware that the one-child policy is not only a violation of human rights, but also has long term negative consequences. China has become an aging society and is facing many challenges of providing care for the aging population. My life experience made me highly motivated to improve my abilities in advocating for social change and social justice as a social work professional in China, armed with a Ph.D. in Social Work from University of Chicago. . I am eager to continue to develop my analytical and research skills by obtaining substantive, methodological training in order to prepare myself fully for a lifelong struggle to ensure the aging population receive proper care. I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social justice and human rights.
The profession of Social Work or any other Psychological based profession is very difficult and very drowning emotionally, physically, and even spiritually. Being able to not put your own personal emotions or opinions your cases or towards your clients. In this case, you have a professional worker who is also a friend and mother. Though a loyal friend has to put everything personally and focus on her client who happens to be her son’s friend as well. Psychology Today claimed in 2002, that the biggest problem with today 's young males is that they often have mild to moderate alexithymia—they are unable to identify their own (and others ') feelings and thus unable to communicate about them. They never learned how from absent or
Choosing a career is a very important aspect to people’s lives. One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I want to have the ability to touch people’s lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to college to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.
Having spent the last two years working as a volunteer in the social service field, I have come to realize that my passion lies in helping people, who are in a position of less advantaged. With a view to accomplish my ambition to become a social worker I am currently taking an access to a master degree of social work.
One must consider the nature of oppression and how it is present within social work. The nature of oppression infiltrates all aspects of life. Social work theorist, defines oppression as “relations that divide people into dominant or superior groups and subordinate or inferior ones. These relations of domination consist of the systematic devaluing of the attributes and contributions of those deemed inferior, and their exclusion from the social resources available to those in the dominant group”. When humans experience a perceived threat to their personal identities and lack the ability to maintain and affirm a unique identity, they exclude others by contrasting themselves against a constructed, and inferior, identity of the other. To better

It was a tie between a psychologist and a social worker that I wanted to research. All this time I thought I wanted a career in psychology. Going through all that I have really learned about myself, I felt that I am better rounded for a career in social work. I believe that I have the skills and I will gain the knowledge to make it in this career. I also learned that just like psychology, there is many sub areas of social work. I could be working with people with disabilities, those with addictions, and my personal favorite children (OOH). Lastly, depending on what area interests me the most, the salaries do differ and each area will be continuing to grow in population.
I have countless reasons as to why I want to become a social worker, however my experience in the foster care system and my background as a refugee are the main motivators of my decision. As a former foster child, social workers ensured my safety and guided me through some very difficult times in my life, and I am very grateful for that. In return, I aspire to help foster children overcome their challenges and succeed in life. I want to become a social worker so I can translate my unparalleled passion to help those in need into effective practice. I believe the social work profession has the power to make a meaningful difference by advocating for the vulnerable, and promoting social and global well-being.
The path to becoming a clinical social worker has been as rewarding as it has been challenging. I have enjoyed every moment of learning as it has helped shape me into the person and professional I want to be. My original career path was not that of a Social Worker but once I had chosen the path of becoming a Social Worker everything started to make sense. I felt like I had found a place to belong and a feeling of “rightness”. I feel I still have a lot to learn when it comes to being a clinical Social Worker. I feel that I am able to perform many different theories or practices but I have a hard time putting a name to the theory that I am using. Honestly, a social workers job is never done so I expect to be learning for the rest of my life. I want to be able to help as many people as I can with the work that I am doing in the most ethical and professional way. I feel that my passion for helping others and drive to become a clinical social worker fit the mission of AU and NASW.
In class, I was giving the assignment to reflect my thoughts about the social work profession and what I like to pursed in the future. I knew since I was young that I wanted a career where I could help people who were in need or do not have a voice to speak up. A career that I got to wake up every day that made me feel like I was changing the world. However, I did not know what major to consider. All my life I have always been the type of person to help people. I have always been a social worker in my head but not legally. I have been doing things social workers do everyday, but I am not certified to take actions that an authorized social worker can take. I do it all out the kindness of my heart. I do it also to make those individuals who think that no one loves them feel loved. I have always been kind, nice, and giving
Among an array of Values from The Code of Ethics (TCE) of social work Value 1 dictates that as social workers we must respect the dignity of our clients and refrain from passing judgement onto them (Canadian Association of Social Work, 2005, pg.7). As a social worker, it is important to follow this value as it prevents the distancing of the client from the worker as the client will have a better chance of opening up to someone who does not instantly tell them what to do or reprimand them for their actions or non-action in their lives. Oppression relates to the TCE in that it says the social work profession’s main purpose is to raise their clients who are vulnerable, oppressed and/or living in poverty (CASW, 2005, pg.7). Taking this into account

As a child growing up in an impoverished neighborhood and in a low income family; I always had dreams and goals of helping other families that endured the same struggles I encountered as a child. My desire grew stronger as I watched my grandmother effortlessly helping the lives of battered women and children. She was very passionate about everything she did to help someone even if she had to use her last dime. Her devotion and aspiration to help people in need is why I chose to pursue a career in social work. She was my role model and a perfect example of someone I would love to be like. Choosing a career in social work comes with ample of field opportunities which are one of the reasons why I am interested in
Of all the social sciences and helping profession, what sets social work apart is the mission to serve marginalized, historically underrepresented, and disenfranchised populations (Lum, 2011; Morales & Sheafor, 2004; National Association of Social Workers [NASW]. The social work profession and particularly social workers have to keep an eye on the voices of oppressed in our society, take an active stand against inequities, injustice, and make a commitment to changing the lives of individuals as well as institutions and society (CSWE, 2015).
