This reading assignment covered many great points but the two points that stood out the most were the history of the social welfare system and social welfare profession, and how the structure of it changed over the years. As needs arose and people became more educated, systems were put in place that would allow for those that were in need to get assistance. The concept of social workers is not a very old concept, the inception of them was as early as the 1800s. The structure of what social welfare as well as what is now classified as a social worker is completely different today than it was at its beginning. The text likened the social worker to a general practitioner who is trained in several different areas, so too is the social worker who is trained to handle a wide range of common, social, and personal problems, as the text states. I also found it very interesting how there were different levels of social work, Micro- one on one with an individual client, or mezzo- working with families, or small groups, or lastly, macro- which is on an even larger scale dealing with communities, organizations and seeking to change rules and social policies. I always thought of social workers as people who either worked for our state government helping children in the system or pulling the kids out of bad places. The other school of thought I had was that they were there as caseworkers to help the poor and the needy or those that chose in our society not to work for whatever reason. After reading our text for this module, I have learned that just as in the beginning of the development of what we now call social welfare and social workers, people who have been involved in this line of work have seemingly always been for the same cause, to help those who can’t help themselves or get on their feet, and to keep encouraging those that chose to stay in the same poverty state of mind that they can have a changed life and continue to get them the help that is
