Throughout time, works of literature have often carried messages of great social importance. It is essential to understand these significant themes and agendas in order to understand the basis of the novels. Throughout The Prophet’s Hair by Salman Rushdie, War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells and A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, there is much evidence supporting the idea of social or political ‘warnings,’ one could argue, about the functionality of society and those who govern said societies. The philosophies discovered by the reader (set there purposely by the author) provide the means to the essential bridge between reading literature and understanding the possibilities and comprehending the literature in question. Allegorically speaking, these three works all contain separate yet important contexts regarding social structures, ideas and the consequences of both notions. Religion and its relationship with the state and the people, as well as the evil of money and social detachment are just a few of the critical ideologies used by Wells, Burgess and Rushdie. There is substantial proof supporting the idea of numerous political and social agendas in both The Prophet’s Hair and War of the Worlds, and in A Clockwork Orange.
In the short story The Prophet’s Hair, the author fills the plot with all sorts of messages of exaggeration and religious implications and customs. The themes of detachment, religion and the state and the illusion of the government maintaining total control over national and international relations can leave one with a solid sense of security if they don’t ask questions or read ‘between the lines’ of these books and understand the meanings in each novel. The official connotations meant by the books can be interpreted in different manners, as readers see what they wish to see in the book. The hidden political and social agenda of these three books offers an eye-opening perspective of the importance of social awareness and what we, as a society, can do in the future to prevent some of these events from representing themselves in our lives.
In “1984,” Orwell portrays Winston’s secret struggle to undermine the totalitarian rule of Big Brother and the Party in Oceania. The different government agencies, such as the Thought Police and Ministry of Love, exercise unrestricted totalitarian rule over people. Winston actively seeks to join the rebellion and acquire the freedoms undermined by the Party. On the other hand, Heinlein’s brief narrative, “The Long Watch,” depicts a contrasting struggle championed by Dahlquist against the power hungry Colonel Towers and the Patrol. In his struggle to prevent the total domination of the world by the Patrol, Dahlquist chooses to sacrifice his life. Le Guin’s “The Ones who walk away from Omelas,” illustrates a communal form of injustice tolerated for the benefit of the entire city but necessitating the inhumane imprisonment of a child. He portrays the ambiguity of human morality and the individual struggle to determine right from wrong. The authors address social change and power in different ways, reflective of their individual perceptions. Hence, in each narrative, the author illustrates the individual’s role in effecting social change and the conditions under which such change becomes possible.
Critics have already begun a heated debate over the success of the book that has addressed both its strengths and weaknesses. The debate may rage for a few years but it will eventually fizzle out as the success of the novel sustains. The characters, plot, emotional appeal, and easily relatable situations are too strong for this book to crumble. The internal characteristics have provided a strong base to withstand the petty attacks on underdeveloped metaphors and transparent descriptions. The novel does not need confrontations with the Middle East to remain a staple in modern reading, it can hold its own based on its life lessons that anyone can use.
The purpose of any and all texts is to criticise our society, whether that criticism is found in a novel or a film. This is established in the Novella ‘Animal Farm,’ written by George Orwell and the film ‘V for Vendetta’ by James McTeigue. Both of these texts analyse the way society is managed and how the populations can permit this management.
“Bathes Roland (1977) “The explanation of a work is always sought in the man or women who produced it.” The values, beliefs and attitudes of George Orwell’s can easily be seen in the novel 1984, as no text is neutral. These values attitudes and beliefs are communicated in the novel through socio-cultural context and by the use of certain discourses, ideologies, and historical influences. Books are more than simple stories, they have a message to send, whether it be in a direct or indirect way. Books can also tell us about the author’s life, beliefs, inner ambitions and fears; Moreover, they often project the writer’s vision about their environment, reflecting their society in which they lived. Writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernesto Guevara were capable, not only of portraying the society in which they are immerse, but also to convey them in an exquisite social critique. Such literary pieces of art do not criticize in a direct way, nor to specific people or events. They, however, present the vision of the author’s concern with social issues of injustice, misguided values and loss of direction.
In both texts it seems clear that both technological advancement and control are imperative to the succession of an autocratic state. And as the audience is always kept keenly aware of the dangers that homogeneity poses to the quality of life, these dystopian texts question whether technology necessitates a sacrifice of human individuality.
The tone of “Notes from Underground” is sharp, strange and bitter. The bitterness of the book is traced to the multiple personal misfortunes the author suffered as he wrote his novel. Through these personal tragedies it can be argued that the author presented the position of the “underground man” through his own experiences. Additionally, the research holds the second belief that the novel’s presentation of “underground man” is founded on the social context the novel addresses (Fanger 3). Through this, it was found that Dostoevsky presented the suffering of man under the emerging world view directed by European materialism, liberalism and utopianism. Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Henrik Ibsen were two famous writers of the nineteenth era who became famous by writing about realism with their masterpieces; Dostoyevsky with the “Notes from Underground” and Ibsen with “Hedda Gabler”. Both works are based on the realistic picture of the whole society, between rich and poor, where their protaonist’s actions are result of social determinism. The two books are based on Orwell 's personal and political background. Orwell was so obsessed with the idea of revolution that he created the details of this revolution in his mind in two books: the first is factual out of his experience and the second is fictional in a symbolic narration. Orwell’s obsession with revolution consists in the images, ideas, or words that preoccupy his mind so forcefully that they become real even when they are not. In his short story, “The Prophet’s Hair,” Salman Rushdie make use of magic realism, symbolization and situational irony to comment on class, religion, and the fragility of human life. The story is brimming with ironic outcomes that add to the lighthearted and slightly fantastic tone. Rushdie’s use of the genre magic realism capitalizes on the absurdity of each situation but makes the events relevant to readers’ lives. In addition, the irony in the story serves as a way to further deepen Rushdie’s commentary on class and religion. Finally, his use of symbolization focuses on the concept of glass, and just how easily it can be broken.
