What is so captivating about fiction stories? Is it the many abnormal events that can occur throughout the story? In Junot Diaz short story Monstro he focuses in fiction in order to write his story. In this fiction story he presents to us how the country of Haiti is hit by an abnormal disease. The name of the disease as the people decided to call it is La Negrura (The Blackness), this disease causes the infected to turn into zombie like creatures. As the short story develops were able to see that the story is science fiction, Junot Diaz decided to use some of the literary elements in order to give his story a sense of social realism. With the help of literary elements such as imagery, Junot Diaz in his fiction story Monstro is able to create a sense of social realism. Imagery is a literary element that is developed through detailed writing, this element was used by Diaz in order to give his fiction story a sense of social realism. Imagery is developed through detailed writing, in imagery you make the reader dive into their imagination and create in their mind and image of what you’re telling him in the text. In Diaz short fiction story he uses imagery in order to give his story a sense of social realism, “In the D.R. we heard about the riot. Saw horrific videos of people getting chased down and butchered” (pg. 9). In this quote Junot gives us details about how people are being chased and not just killed instantly by the infected but they decide to butcher them. By the details he presents we instantly start to imagine how the infected were killing the people. This imagery event gives the story a sense of social realism because if this event would have actually occurred every human across the world would see the videos that the cha... ... middle of paper ... ...re of a sense of social realism. By saying that thirty-two air planes plummeted out of the sky due to a bomb detonation shows us how in reality this is not currently able to occur, it gives the reader a sense of social realism. The story Monstro by Junot Diaz is based in fiction, the disease of people getting infected and turning into zombie like creatures is fiction. Even if the setting was in a real place such as Haiti and Dominican Republic the plot of the story, of the zombie apocalypse was fiction. The short story Monstro by Junot Diaz was fiction overall, but he also showed the reader on some events social realism taking place. With the help of literary elements such as imagery, Junot Diaz in his story Monstro is able to create a sense of social realism. Even if the story was fiction, through imagery Diaz was able to show the reader a sense of social realism.
