My social problem is Nevada unemployment. But since, Las Vegas is one of the major cities in Nevada, I’m going to concentrate on the unemployment rates on Las Vegas compared to other metropolitan areas. This is a social problem that is occurring in other cities, but it is more prevalent in Las Vegas than in other cities and I want to know why Las Vegas is one of the places with the highest unemployment rate. This is a sociologically interesting because I want to know why Las Vegas being such a tourist city, is still facing unemployment. This topic is very sociologically interesting because I want to see if there is any patterns that show why one city has higher unemployment rates than others, and I also want to see what other cities are doing …show more content…
Reading the Las Vegas Review-Journal, I was able to see that since 2010 Las Vegas have lost about 180,000 jobs, including 83,000 positions in construction, and about 43,000 jobs in leisure and hospitality. (Robinson). In this article it also talked about the casinos being affected by the economy, now the casinos are only employing 1 person for each hotel room. This means that the casinos are not hiring as many people as before and this cause for people to be unemployed. This is affecting everyone because if big casinos are not getting as much visitors as before, this means that they are not employing as many people as they …show more content…
My brother had a really good job, but because the company had financial problems they had to go several people go, and my brother was one of them. It was really hard for him to find a job, he was jobless for about a month. My brother had to go to another town in order to find a job. This topic is also interesting to me because I see how not having work experience can also affect you. I have applied for almost every job, but because of my lack of work experience it is very hard for those companies to hire you. I want to see how Las Vegas is dealing with the unemployment rates, are they only hiring people with an excellent work history? Or are the companies not hiring at all in order to maintain their sales. Because of all of those reasons, I decided I wanted to write my paper on the unemployment rate in Las Vegas
Mankind often migrates to modern, rich, multicultural countries, towns with high economies and good standard of living such as Prague, Germany, London, Los Angeles, New York and Shanghai. I would like to draw on the city of Shanghai. Shanghai is one of the most developed cities in the world due to this many people come to the town to find work. During 1983 and 2000 years the number of migrant workers increased from 0.5 million people to 3.87 million people. A large percentage of migrant workers work in manufacturing (25.8%).
For years casino gambling was portrayed in the media and Hollywood as being associated with criminal activities and the mafia. Now with proper scrutiny and government regulations casino gambling has become a lucrative business, with casinos stock even trading on Wall Street. Casino gambling is an ever increasingly popular and legal activity in many states throughout the United States. “The term gambling or ‘gaming’ as the industry calls it, means any legalized form of wagering or betting conducted in a casino, on a riverboat, on an Indian reservation, or at any other location under the jurisdiction of the United States” (National Gambling Impact Study Commission Act). States that allow casino gambling benefit vastly by re-incorporating the taxation off of commerce gained from casinos and tourism associated with the casinos back into the state and local communities. Jobs created by casinos also have a positive impact on the economy in local communities surrounding casinos as well as, the states that legalize gambling. Texas, while allowing horse and dog racing, lottery, and charitable bingo, does not currently prohibit casino gambling. In this essay, I will provide the different reasons the State of Texas will benefit from legalizing casinos gambling. By not having casinos, Texas continues to lose valuable tax revenue that could be awarded to state and local government funded programs for example, education, public safety, economic development, and infrastructure improvements. With the increasing number of legal casinos in bordering states such as Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, the loss of tourism and tax revenue is a growing concern for Texas. Passing legislation to allow casinos in the State of Texas will help fund ...
Unemployment in the city limits further feeds the belly of poverty. Unemployment rates for Richmond in August 2013 were 8.2% (United States Department of Labor, 2013). These rates represent only those that are documented as unemployed and does not consider the “under employed” as they may be working but not getting paid for a full work week. These unemployment rates would likely be higher if they were accurate and all inclusive of the unemployed in Richmond. The unemployment rate for the entire state of Virginia was reported at 5.8% in August 2013 (United States Department of Labor). The unemployment rate is related to education. There are not enough good paying jobs to support those who did not finish basic high school. There are not enough good paying jobs to reach citizens of the city that do not have adequate transportation.

The Great Transformation From A Casino City To a Resort Destination Atlantic City is the place to gamble on the East Coast. Although this may initially seem to be a positive characteristic, it is evident that this destination has the capability to be so much more than it already is. This point of interest has the world’s first boardwalk, which opened in 1881, has 4 miles of hotels, amusements, and casinos. Atlantic City was originally a resort town, until 1978, when it changed into a gaming city. This popular day-trip destination had over 34 million visitors in 1998 alone. Despite this amazing statistic, along with the revenue that gambling brings in, many steps are being taken in order to further promote the expansion of this great city. The renovations and improvements being made to the Atlantic City Convention Center are already increasing the amount of money coming in. There is a great deal of other things to focus on in the Atlantic City region. In endorsing local attractions in this scenic area, and in shifting the target market of this spot, this city would change back into a resort destination. When most people think of Atlantic City, the first thing that comes to mind is the casino attractions that are available. With the city’s constant shuffle and excitement, gamblers from all over go there dreaming of a big win. Many people consider Atlantic City to be the “Las Vegas of the East Coast”. There are over 12 casinos, with one building as magnificent as the next. At any given second of the day, these hopefuls may have their lives changed in an instant with just one win. These casino hotels gain most of their income from gamblers. Casinos employ almost 49,000 people every year. This number should actually jump when the Marina District opens. Although Atlantic City prospers as a gambler’s paradise, many would love to show others just how much more Atlantic City really has to offer its tourists. The Atlantic City Convention Center, built in 1929, was renovated with $72 million in 1997. With the world’s largest pipe organ, everyone from the Beatles to Pavarotti has played there. It was designated a historic landmark in 1987. Conventions, trade shows, meetings, and public events of the greater Atlantic City area all take place here. When the renovation is finally completed, it will seat up to 12,000 people for special events.
In the middle of a Las Vegas casino a secret garden waits to be explored. Over fifteen thousand people each day visit the Bellagio Conservatory inside the Bellagio Hotel and Casino; whether it is the first visit or one of many there is always something new to discover. The entrance is a tunnel through two twenty gallon aquariums filled with Clown Fish, Yellow Tang, Fiji Devil, and Heninochus. You may recognize some of them from Finding Nemo! The floors and ceiling through the tank are LED images of fish, showcasing lights that Vegas is famous for.
Wynn Macau’s competitive advantages include physical capital and human resources. Wynn Macau has had some recent and very public legal troubles but it faced them head on, resulting in a dismissal of all charges. Wynn has recently invested in a 2 phase casino project in Cotai worth $8-$9 billion. Wynn Macau has one major problem which it needs to address in the near future, which is a lack of labor force. If not addressed quickly, this issue can result in not only loss of profits but unused assets.

As stated above, Las Vegas truly understands the needs of its tourist and natives. As a native of Vegas I can just only image the everyday excitement. I’ve always wondered, is Las Veg,as, a place to raise a family? Is Las Vegas, a place to have a wife? Its sounds crazy, but there are so much going in Las Vegas it's pretty easy to get all screwed up. In fact, in a trending article it states that marriage has dropped in Las Vegas. There are two perspectives to this story. Some will say it's because of the “fast life” and tempting things, others as in the article will say it has to do with the correlation of having a degree and certain motives with your significant others. I believe both perspectives can be true. For exam=ple, there are just so
Social problems are a rising problem caused by population growth. One of most well-known problems is the overcrowding of an area. Cities like New York and Washington D.C. are ridiculously crowded. Due to the increase of population in the city, the cost of living is much higher. The unemployment rate is also higher due to the lack of jobs over the amount of people living in the city. This causes for an increase in the crime rate. Criminals all have different motives, and one of the main motives is survival. Banks and stores are constantly robbed due to the high amount of unemployment. Families are stealing just to be able to put food on the table and clothes on their
People need money to purchase all kinds of goods and services they needed every day and sometimes, for goods or services they desire to own. To fulfill that, they have the essential need to earn money. In order to earn money, they must work in either in fields related to their interests or to their qualifications. However, people will meet different challenges during their jobs-hunting sessions, such as many candidates competing for a job vacancy; salaries offered are lower than expected salaries and economic crisis or down which causes unemployment. Unemployment is what we will be looking into in this report. Dwidedi (2010) stated that unemployment is defined as not much job vacancies are available to fulfill the amount of people who want to work and can work according to the current pay they can get for a job they chose to work as. There are four major types of unemployment: frictional, structural, cyclical and seasonal unemployment.
This book's collection of essay were particularly enjoyable for me to read for two main reasons, the first being that I have been extremely observant and fascinating with analyzing the world around me my entire life and could heavily relate to each of the author's experiences of being fascinating with Las Vegas' unique atmosphere. The second reason this work was so interesting to me is that since I was sixteen years old my mom has lived in Las Vegas and I visit her there regularly. Because of this I have become quite familiar with Las Vegas and all of its eccentricities. Of all the essays in this book however, chapter 5 was by far the most intriguing for me to read. I felt like I was reading my own thoughts throughout the entire essay. Going
What casinos need to do to stay relevant is do away with the old ways of doing things. As many business know, you can't stay complacent with what you're doing and think it will always work. One of the big things taking away from the business of land based casinos is the evolution of online casinos. Many people would rather stay at home on the couch and gamble because they don't want to deal with the hassle of going to gamble in public. That can be likened to online video games.
The most common causes of unemployment are getting fired and layed off for specific reasons. People might get layed off if a company is going out of business or maybe if there are positions in the company that are no longer needed. It’s difficult to find a job right away after being fired. Companies don’t want to hire someone who has just been fired for reasons such as failure to do a sufficient job, not showing up to work, stealing, etc. It’s also hard to find a job instantly after being layed off. In some cases the economy is down and it is hard to find any work in general.
