Social Norms in America
They hold us together as a culture, while separating us as unique individuals at the same time. Folkways, which are based more on custom and etiquette are the most broken of all norms. This can be explained because worst case scenario our only reprimand may be someone staring or talking about us. Mores, while a little more serious than folkways, still don’t have a very serious punishment, just maybe a little more than weird looks, double takes and bad mouthing. Mores are usually based on social morals, which can sometimes make people get a little uneasy, but not much more than that. Laws are the most serious or formal norms, with standard punishment respective to the type of law that is broken. The norm that I have chosen to discuss, in my opinion, hits a little bit of all three of these categories. I have chosen to analyze a television talk show and the guests they attract. Maury Povich, while previously known as one of the more serious talk shows with fairly reasonable guests and topics has become more of a “Jerry Springer” type of talk show. It is almost so vile that you just have to watch it kind of a show; at least that is my roommate’s excuse. Monday, March 14th, the show aired the topic “My Boyfriend Controls My Every Move.” Since Maury was straying from his almost everyday topic of “Who Is My Babies Daddy”, I decided to give it a gander. I was absolutely appalled at the things these couples were saying. There was one couple in particular that really had my undivided attention that had been married twenty some odd years. This woman was made to do everything her husband said, or she would be punished. Her duties included cleaning, cooking, shopping, grooming and washing her husban...

...t the feminist theory best fits this behavior because it is strictly applied to one gender, and is very stereotyped to be that way. In a close second, the labeling theory also fits well because an overwhelming majority of people believe that their actions are wrong and deviant and even though these men may not accept their deviant status, they still realize that what they are doing to their girlfriends is viewed as deviant to most people. Differential association relates to this topic, because the behavior was learned from someone close to these men. In most cases it could be generalized to be learned from their fathers engaging in this aggressive behavior towards their mothers. Although it may be a little off topic, I think that even though domestic violence is a form of deviant behavior, coming to national television to brag about it to the world just as bad.
Almost as if they were to be trained as an animal. Second, socioeconomic status was a key factor in abusive relationships. Lower income women are proven to be more frequently victims of domestic violence than wealthier women. Situations where the male partner is underemployed or unemployed, he’s not seeking employment, or they are residing in a poor neighborhood all can have an impact of on abusive relationships. Third, some batterers were abused themselves. Here, batterers were abused during their upbringing whether it be physical, verbal, or sexually abused. They may have also witnessed domestic violence as a part of their childhood. From here, being abusive was embedded in their mind. They were confused about a healthy relationship. Using violence as a means of power and control was the way of life. Boys who witness domestic violence are more likely to batter as an adult. Fourth, race was another factor when being abusive. Black women seem to be more disrespectful towards men and talk out of line resulting in abuse. Black women also worry about the repercussions of reporting domestic violence. A lot of abusive relationships go

...e failed his people. His choice to conquer this dragon seems to be the obvious choice for a warrior. He must protect his people. But Beowulf seems so caught up in the surreal threats such as, monsters and dragons, he fails to realize the real peril he has left his people in. Beowulf is aware of his age and uneasy feeling toward his success yet he chooses to take on the dragon anyways. Although the dragon is defeated the Geat people are presented with even greater danger of the Sweds who will surely pounce on their nation.
...n though domestic violence is frowned upon men use it to instill fear in a woman. It is a strange concept but largely in part while domestic violence is performed as I stated earlier.
Folkways are impulsive and passively observed in a way that there is little to no pressure, on individuals who violated such orders in the society. Children learn how to behave in agreements with those Folkways by observation from parents and adults in such society while Mores are norms of a society that have an official means of conforming the laws of the land. Norms are ways to guarantee that every member of a giving society behave according to the customary law of the land. An individual who breaks these laws are subjected to punishments. The society has this mores and people are assigned to enforce them and whoever that cannot conform to this law are liable for the consequences and this are just ways that every society use to promote orders and reinforcing that there is a uniformity in everyone's behavior in order to coexist in a giving society by order.
Lets start by understanding that cultures are a melting pot of people’s beliefs, language, behaviors, values, material objects, and norms. Norms are written and non-written “expectations of behavior” that govern a certain location, place, or culture (26). These norms also vary from culture to culture meaning what is a norm in the U.S may not be a norm in India. For example, a norm in America would be tipping a waiter after a meal. Another would be acknowledging someone as you walk past him or her, typically done at work or in a public place. In all, norms are folkways, mores, taboos, and written laws that are an established standard of one’s behavior.
Patriarchal Terrorism is general need to control a relationship. It is violence exclusively initiated by men as a way of gaining and maintaining absolute control over their female partner. (Shehan, 2003) The second form of couple violence, is common couple violence, is less a product of patriarchy. (Johnson, 1995) Patriarchal terrorism does exist today. Differences do not exist in intimate violence based on social class, education level, race / ethnicity or sexual orientation. Intimate violence is violence that occurs between two people in a relationship. It includes four types of behaviors: physical abuse, sexual abuse, threats, and emotional abuse. The longer the abuse goes on the longer it will affect the victim. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006) Partner violence occurs in all countries, social, economic, religious and cultural boundaries. (Shehan, 2003) I have observed couples with good communication and poor communication and intimacy. Dr. Gottman and his colleagues created recommendations, tactics, and strategies for couples with poor communication, intimacy and conflict problems.
Folkway can be described as community customs. Folkways can also refer to the standards of behavior that are socially accepted, however, not morally significant. They are considered the norms for everyday behavior that the community is expected to follow for the purpose of tradition and convenience. Norms on the other hand can be described as particular cultural expectations that govern the behavior of people in a society. Breaking a folkway is not a serious offence and does not lead to a sanction. Examples of folkways include cultural forms of food habits and dress.
“Dragons. Four fully grown, enormous, vicious-looking dragons were rearing on their hind legs inside an enclosure fenced with thick planks of wood, roaring and snorting- torrents of fire were shooting into the dark sky from their open, fanged mouths, fifty feet above the ground on their outstretched necks.” (p286)
...tionship. As with any relationship, marriage is no different. Each member of a marital dyad must have clearly defined, and understood communication between them. Satisfaction and stability in a marriage is achieved through communication and interaction between its members. A breakdown of interpersonal communication is positively related to dissatisfaction in a marriage.
Mores are often backed up by law while a folkway is backed by people reactions. Mores are simply the strong reinforced norms. Norms are the specific cultural expectations for how to behave in a well view society. Norms do change from culture to culture. Folkways are norms without any moral underpinning and are the weakest and most loose norms around. Some examples are proper attire, saying please and thank you and opening doors for others. Mores are stronger than folkways. Norms that embody the moral views and principles of a group carries great moral significance. Basically mores are stick norms that control moral and ethical behavior. Mores are norms based on definition of right and wrong. Unlike folkways mores and morally significant, People usually feel strongly about them so violating them would result in disapproval. Some example are Incest ,theft and cannibalism in German. Laws are formally defined and enforced by the government, should be considered the strongest. Provides an explicit statement of what is allowable and what is not. Examples of Law would be theft, murder, and speeding. If violated the person violating the law if caught can and will get cited, owe a fine or even jail time. Anomie referred to a situation that’s cultural norms break down because of rapid change. An example is anomic suicide it can occur during a major economic depression, when people are not able to achieve the goals that they have learned to
Teens are the most likely not to get enough sleep during the school week due to the amount of homework they have. A lot of teens are not getting the right amount of sleep, and are instead getting “about seven hours of sleep per night when they should be getting nine and a-half hours of sleep per night” (“Backgrounder. Later School”). Other organizations like the CDC and pediatricians cited significant risks that come with lack of sleep, “including higher rates of obesity and depression and motor-vehicle accidents among teens as well as an overall lower quality of life”(Hamblin). These are just some of the effects it has on people WHO do not get enough sleep due to early wake times during the school year.
Frequently, marriage is one of the important milestones of life that most people go through at some point of their lives. However, it is often difficult to sustain a happy marriage full of love and satisfaction. Therefore, some psychologists conducted experiments and surveys to study what factors determine a satisfying marriage. I have reviewed in total five research articles related to marital satisfaction, such that explore the difference between husbands and wives (Kurdek, 2005), variables that affect marital relationship (Reissman, Aron, & Bergen, 1993), and variable that predicts the satisfaction level in the later years of marriage (Tsapelas, Aron, & Orbuch, 2009). Based on the pioneering work of Bernard (1982), scholars
Every movement and every word spoken is a form of communication. In a marriage, a spouse shares almost every aspect of his or her life with another person, and effective, respectful communication is believed to be one factor of successful marriages. In a 2008 study on communication difficulties in marriage, it was concluded that at the onset of marriage, couples are uncertain about the decisions they need to make together. However, over time the best decisions present themselves through private signals from their partners. The uncertainty itself did not cause a marriage to dissolve; however, it was found that inaccurately interpreting the private signals of partners could cause the marriage to end in divorce (Thompson, 2008). Learning to interpret a partner’s private signals and learning to communicate in a more effective way is an important factor in the success of marriage. Couples that...
Marriage is the start of an “everlasting” bond between a man and woman. Couples entering into a marriage bond should have a basic understanding of the many alterations that will take place. The major adjustments after marriage are goal setting, traditions, joined decision making, and learning to compromise. A long-lasting marriage is dependent upon how a couple works on the relationship. These changes will and can have negative and positive influences on a relationship. From the time that a couple says their vows, they are bringing together two unrelated families with two distinct traditions to form one. This is the beginning of the changes and challenges that the two must overcome.
