The social norms of the mall food court were examined and studied for the purpose of this research study. In order to understand the intention for my research— social norms can be defined as “social standards of behavior and/or thought that (a) indicate what people should or should not do or think under some circumstances and (b) are at least in part enforced upon individuals by external pressure” (Dequech 2006: 473). My interest in this study was to analyze whether the demographics associated with norms coerced the way people interact with family and friends and to what extent of social control is there. Furthermore, I wanted to investigate what the specific norms of the mall food court were and point out acts of deviance, which can be formally defined as, “nonconformity to a set of norms that are accepted by a significant number of people in a community or society” (Appelbaum, Carr, Duneier, Giddens 2009: 173). Essentially, the way people act was based on the public location, essentially, the social norms that were followed are influenced by the location and the people around them. Subsequently, it can be summarized as followed: “They regard a social norm as a rule governing an individual 's behavior that third parties other than state agents diffusely enforce by means of social sanctions. A person who violates a norm risks becoming the target of punishment..." (Ellickson 2001: 3). This specific topic was important for me to analyze because normally I do not spend long periods of time at the mall court. I usually purchase what I need and leave quickly after, it is very rare that I take my time to shop, sit down, and rest in the food court and grab something to eat. For that reason, I was motivated to see how norms played out in ... ... middle of paper ... ...o break it down into specific groups to further analyze how norms are socially constructed. Through my observations, I came to the revelation that it was polite to minimize phone use at the table when with friends as well as the fact that it was socially normal to sit next to each other as opposed to sitting across. On day two, November 21st, a group of six white friends were sitting close together to enjoy a meal after a day of shopping (assumed based on the many shopping bags around the floor next to their chairs). When they sit down, they filled up the table by sitting next to each other while the other three friends sat across from the other three. In this specific observation, I noticed that although everyone at the table talked and engaged in conversation — the two females in the group talked more than the others. What could be considered deviant was the fact
In history, social norms have not been fully established.
Societal norms are ultimately the sociological expectations for our society. So, when people see somebody standing in the middle of a crowded public place doing nothing, they are going to take notice. I realized that while standing in the middle of the mall where many people
Deviance is any behavior, belief, or condition that violates significant social norms in the society or group in which it occurs (Kendall, 2012). Our experiment will study the behavioral deviance of a social norm. Sociologists use symbolic interactionism to study face-to-face interactions. We are expected to follow these certain unwritten rules of behavior telling us the way that we should act in certain situations. The social norm or folkway I chose to break was that of invading an individual’s personal space. See Figure 1.0 showing the proximity generally utilized by Americans, according to Edward T.Hall. Personal space is the region surrounding a person, approximately 18 inches, which they regard as psychologically theirs. People value their personal space, and feel discomfort, anger, or anxiety when their personal space is encroached (Personal space, n.d.). We walked around to find the best scenario and individuals to interject our teammate in purposefully invading their comfort zone.
... current one. I understand that it is important to act a certain way around a boss, colleagues, or different groups of friends, but in this book, it is evident that social conventions are very important in almost every relationship, excluding family. In fact, I think that family is only excluded because a person is who they are mainly because of their upbringing; essentially, they reflect the same characteristics and behaviors as their families. The book has caused me to believe that social conventions may play a large role in how I or my partner behaves in our relationship. Thus, my opinion on social conventions has been reinforced, adding romantic relationships to the list of social groups I must act a certain way in. Not only do social conventions encompass most relationships, but I now believe it also includes romantic relationships that may lead to marriage.
... day. The hardest part of the experiment was going against social psychology; it was very uncomfortable going against the social norms. We also found that it was difficult to match all of our schedules to be able to do the experiment all together when the gym was full. Overall the experiment taught us that social norms have molded society to believe that they should restrain their original thoughts and actions when in a public place. Lastly, individuals should not disturb other social norms that occur within the range of accepted actions, especially in the area of clothing.
While breaking the three social norms there was one feeling that I felt was mutual throughout. Breaking those norms made me felt extremely out of place and rude. They made me feel that way because I knew what I was doing wasn 't socially right and people would get mad or be rude to me with their reactions. For the most part throughout my experiment, most people reacted the way I thought they would. You could tell that most people felt awkward or uncomfortable while I was breaking the norm. I faced a couple of difficulties through my assignment when it came to violating the social norms. While trying to break the movie theater norm, it was difficult for me to pick movies with different variety of people and movies that were a little older so less people would be attending them. I also had a little trouble when it came to answering the phone and waiting for the other person to talk first. The problem with this one was that I had to wait for people to actually call me which doesn 't happen that often in this day and age anymore. To conclude, these social norms forced people to be in uncomfortable situations and make a decision as to how they would react to

Implicit social norms are introduced to us at a very early age, and exert a powerful influence on our behavior into adulthood. Our culture is ruled by social norms. In many situations, people’s perception of these norms has a big influence on their behavior. Implicit social norms are not openly stated, but found when disobeyed. Implicit rules are rules we conform to as a society, and generally these rules make living together more comfortable.
It is 9:00 PM on a Sunday night. Televisions all across America tune into MTV. Millions of viewers will now spend the next thirty minutes watching a television program titled 'Jackass'. While watching this program, the viewers will observe everything from people eating hard boiled eggs in an attempt to purposely vomit, to a man testing out various self defense devices on himself. Next week viewers will tune into the same program to see the same kinds of stunts performed. The reason that America watches these kinds of programs, and the participants in them perform these stunts, are because 'norms' are being broken. A norm is something that is generally accepted by a society as the right thing to do, or the way things are supposed to be. For example, a norm would be to enter an elevator and stand facing the front for the duration of the trip. Breaking that norm would be to enter the elevator and face the back for the duration of the trip. It is not what is expected. Different norms exist in different societies, and when these norms are broken within these societies people pay attention, because it is not an occurrence observed on a regular basis.
There are many things that influence our behavior from internal influences to social norms. Social norms are implicit or explicit rules that govern how we behave in society (Maluso, class notes). Social norms influence our behavior more than any of us realize but we all notice when a norm has been broken. Breaking a social norm is not an easy task and often leads us feeling uncomfortable whether we broke the norm ourselves or witnessed someone else breaking it. Sometimes however, you just have to break a norm to see what happens.
I chose to break a social norm by sitting/ laying on the floor of an aisle in a grocery store, engaging in deviant behavior, instead of shopping for groceries. Sitting on the floor of a grocery store is a case of deviant behavior because it goes against society by breaking the norm. Because the standard behavior of people in a grocery store is to walk and look around, with usually a basket or cart, shopping for desired items, the expected response of others would be feeling uncomfortable, awkward, and confused. Upon performing my act of social deviance, numerous people demonstrated the anticipated reaction. As people turned down the aisle, I occupied, conversations died down to whispers or stopped altogether. Of the people who questioned me on my
There are many causes and reasons on why we are prone or more likely to help certain groups of people compared to another when they are in trouble and in need of our help. One of the reasons that might influence one’s helping behavior is social norm. Social norm of helping can tell us why or when we should help other people when they need our help. Social norm is a putative behavior that an individual is expected to do and obeys to in any particular groups or community that can also be a basis for any acceptable and good behaviors. In other words, social norm can help people to decide on what they should do in any uncertain situations. Norms can also influence someone’s behavior and reasons on why they do what they do.

Bruess. Contemporary Issues in Interpersonal Communication. Los Angeles: Roxbury, 2005. Print.) Though these norms were taught, they were always just inferred. Learning the rules of Proxemics has been eye opening. It is nice to have the general guidelines of intimate, personal, social and public distance. When there are specific rules put in place it is much easier to convey how someone is violating them. For instance, a friend of mine, Mike, recently stopped by my house. It should be noted that Mike has been a notorious “close talker” in our friend group for years. Now that I know the specific distances, was able to talk to Mike about his close talking and that it was making some people uncomfortable. And, because we were alone, the minimalized embarrassment of the situation allowed him to be receptive to the notion that he was violating implicit social rules. I showed him the textbook and we talked about the different distances. Ultimately he thanked me for my candor and has been making strides in appropriate distances while in dyads and
Norms tend to guide the group. Even unknowingly, members act within the norms established. Staying within these boundaries, which become ingrained in their behavior patterns, the group becomes equipped accomplish its goals. While group norms may help a group progress towards its goal, some norms may also hinder the group from working together
