Sandie Mulcrone APN / CNM, MS
Saint Xavier University Abstract
Social Media. What is it? Is it a viable teaching strategy in nursing education? Very simply, it is Internet or web based tools that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas and multimedia images and video. How can it be useful in nursing education? It is a communication platform where students, educators and working health care professionals can connect, share ideas, learn written communication, and have a voice. Social media allows connection, discussion, collaboration and exploration in nursing. Nurse educators are using social media as a viable pedagogical method. Application

Recent publications focus on best practice and considerations of social technology use. Facebook, Twitter, Blogging and Linked In are common places to use social media integration into nursing curriculum (Schmitt, 2012). The NLN identifies core content for using social media in nursing courses as computer literacy, information literacy, informatics, professional communication, health policy, patient privacy and ethics and writing competencies (Schmitt, 2012). Specific examples of incorporating social media that have been effective in student learning are submitting paperwork electronically, creating a blog in which they write professionally on certain topics, create a Twitter account requiring a certain number of legitimate healthcare or nursing followers, and attend online nursing chat webinars (Schmitt, 2012). According to Skirba, Twitter can be used to facilitate active, interactive, and reflective learning (2008). She identifies effective applications of Twitter in her curriculum to include providing “nuggets of knowledge” to her class such as quick notes or references they may want to talk about or websites to visit later; important changes in class plans such as cancellations; and communication with large groups of colleagues. Student response to using Twitter was positive. It allowed …show more content…
Social media is appropriate to a variety of student populations and it appears as though the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of social media application in nursing education. Student response to social media is positive and allows students to reflect, discuss, interact with classmates, review, make decisions and reinforce learning (Schmitt, 2012).
Implications For Nursing Education Social media is a tool to facilitate nursing faculty in helping students gain greater ethics, improve writing competencies, think about nursing research and seek collaborative opportunities within and across nursing programs (Schmitt, 2012). Faculty may use Twitter during a class session to receive responses to questions posed in class. Social media formats facilitate information and media sharing, collaborative work and professional development (Billings, 2012).There is a need for more research on student outcomes and abilities with technology integration and social media use with in the nursing curriculum. Social media enables group learning and develops social skills which enable students to communicate together. Social media applications require technological and pedagogical skills from both teachers and students alike. Utilizing social media technology builds confidence and promotes creativity and learning for both faculty and students (Tuominen,
Mexican-American War DBQ The Mexican-American War is often hailed as a defining moment in American history, a time when the country expanded its territorial reach and cemented its place as a global power. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that the U.S. was not justified in going to war with Mexico. Scholars argue that the use of religion as an excuse to take Texas, the annexation of Texas as a declaration of war to Mexico, and the fact that Texas brought a large slave state to the United States all point to a deeper, more troubling reality. The truth is that the Mexican-American War was a blatant display of American aggression, fueled by a desire for power and control. The U.S. government used religion as a convenient pretext for its actions, claiming that it was their divine right to occupy and settle in Texas.

Social media is affecting all spheres of life and no profession is left untouched by the impact of social media and nursing profession is no exception. Nobody can deny the benefits of social media for the profession of nursing yet its disadvantages for the registered nurses and student nurses during clinical practice cannot be ignored. “Social media can be defined as the constellation of internet-based tools that help a user to connect, collaborate, and communicate with others in real time” (Ressler & Glazer, 2010). Social media is growing at a very rapid rate and is now the mainstream communication method for most of the global population (http://www.internetworldstats.com/facebook.htm). It has brought a tremendous revolution in communication and disseminating information to nurses round the world.
Currently, social media is the most popular method of communicating and interacting with others. It is a methodology to new media as it changes and evolves with our needs and expectations. Social media has evolved and adapted to become a huge part of our personal and professional lives.

The web is no longer a read only product, it now has the ability to be interactive and particpatory. Users are able to interact over the internet with each other with instant messaging and emails and use social networks to share news, videos, and photos with others, bringing people with common interest, opinions, and experiences together and closer. Some of the most popular social networks include Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. Currently social networks are mostly used to keep in touch with friends, colleagues, peers and family, there are far more benefits, that the social media platform can provide. This paper explores the topic of social media in modern education. There are benefits and disadvantages to social media being used in the classroom setting, and they are discussed in detail through the paper.
When it comes to social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, nobody wants to think about the negative effects it has on patients. Brian Cayko, the director of clinical education in the respiratory care program at Great Falls College, Montana State University in Great Falls, Montana argues that social media makes it easier for patients. When a patient is not able to acquire care at the medical facility, they can get in touch with their respiratory therapist with the use of social media sites. Cayko also states that social media sites can be helpful as “educational resources, patient support and social and professional networking.” I think that Cayko knows that everyone must remember the negative things about social media and the internet, with the understanding that just because it’s on the web doesn’t mean that it is the truth. No, not everything is wrong with social media sites, I am involved in social media sites myself; however, personally I know that when it comes to an occupation especially in the medical field, you have to be more aware of the negatives than the
As technology increases and develops in this century, the use of social media increases as well. Schools have begun adapting it, using it as their tool to inform students of any school related news. However, using it as a tool for learning is a different story. By using it as a tool, it can push you off your course with classes. Social media is something that is not needed at school grounds. Schools should not require social media use in classes.
Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
“Social interaction and social presence are addressed by allowing users to collaborate and communicate with peers either using the system or external applications for online collaboration or communication.” (Kozuh) In other words in order for social interaction to occur Kozuh does a terrible job explaining that the subject or in this case college student has to present or interact with the system in order to have success on online collaboration. If students do not use the school sites then it is a waist of time and money for the school to have them. Social media like Twitter or Facebook is being used as a tool to connect students with their professor in a more modern and up to date. Every school campus offers student’s sites in which they are able to connect with other students and professors, but the sites that school offer are not very common. R. Junco, G. Heiberger and E. Loken, the authors of the article “The effect of Twitter on college student engagement and grades” discuss their semester long study on whether or not Twitter could be used to improve the learning of college students. The author’s main arguments is that by incorporating social media like Twitter into the curriculum would improve the ways that the students interact with their classes and professor, which would help them get the most out of their classes. By having students feel more comfortable and know
