In today’s society, social media has a great influence on the young generation. Over the years technology has advanced dramatically, allowing youth to communicate with a large audience through virtual networks and communities. There are many pros and cons of social media but I believe that social media is the ruination of the young generation as it causes distractions, shortens attention spans and leads to the youth having a lack of responsibility. In this essay I will be discussing the reasons why I feel this way.

Media outlets also create visually straightforward sites, enabling users to navigate through it smoothly. However, in the process of doing so they often shorten broadcasted stories and information so that news comes to us short, precise and quick. Thus, the youth could get used to the bite-sized information received instead of long essays and articles, compelling them to have less depth in their thought. For instance, Twitter has made it a point for each tweet to be limited to 140 characters or less so that the users do not need to deal with reading extensively. This is how social media could predicate short but frequent messages, causes the teenage youth to have less depth in thought. As social networking platforms include debating and discussions like discussing about the latest trends and topics, users are able to try out, for example, countering another’s point of view. Online networking platforms also allow us to chat and discuss about, for example, on trend topics, therefore letting the teenage users do some critical thinking. Other than being exposed to news and discussions, the young generation can also establish personal bonds, for instance being regarded to have a trusted connection within the network whilst learning more about the social space and thus building new friendships.
