Is the use of social media in the workplace counter-productive? Of course it is and here’s why. Reason #1, you can’t be focusing on your work if your nose is in your phone. Reason #2, there are better things you could be doing with that time and your employers aren’t paying you to sit around on your phone, they are paying you to work, to make their business more productive and efficient. Imagine this; you walk into a DVD/book/music store and you’re looking around, hoping somebody will come to assist you as you are in need of some help. You’re after a certain item and have a few questions about this said item. You spot a team member but oh no, they are on their phone sitting in a corner, they look so absorbed in what they’re doing you are scared
to ask for assistance. People want to be greeted with friendly faces and nice greetings, to feel welcome in a new environment. You can always find something to do at work, whether it be cleaning, assisting somebody with a task they may need help with or even going over what you've already done, you will always have something to do. In a productive work environment, generally everybody pulls their own weight, have their own set tasks to complete and have enough work to keep them going all day. What happens when social media enters this environment is a slow breakdown of routine and team work. People fall behind on their assigned tasks and therefore the harder working team mates have to suffer by having other peoples tasks handed to them. This can cause tension, stress and other issues which can lead to a break down in relationships formed between team members. These reasons, although brief and not too detailed, show that the use of social media in a workplace is counter-productive and can cause many problems. Therefore social media should be, in my opinion should be banned from workplaces.
Now I will talk to you about bad results when it comes to overuse of social media. 1. There is a marketing company based out of California called “uSamp” that conducted research on overuse of social media. a. Almost 60% of the distractions are wasted exchanging different windows of social media, email, text messages, 45% of work staff can work continually without any interruption for average of 15 minutes and 53% of working staff usually waste around 1 hour on social media (Leonard, 2015). b.
Social media outlets have allowed society to share more information than ever before. The often forgotten fact by internet users is that once a picture, Tweet, or post has been published to a social media site it forever becomes part of the annals of the web. While many believe what they do and say on a social media site will not affect their chances at future employment or provide grounds for termination, the reality is quite the opposite. A new trend has emerged in Employment Law in which employers are making employment decision based off of what they find in applicants or employee’s social media activity. The questions regarding the legality of this practice are extensive. While social media can be a powerful tool in recruitment of a potential candidate, much of the personal information contained on these websites are protected characteristics under existing laws that protect employees from discrimination. Employers need to careful to balance employee’s rights against the business needs of a company.
Social media has a negative impact on our society today due to bullying, job stability, and in person conversations. Bullying affects people because they could attempt to commit suicide. When people have a job they could get in trouble if they start bashing on coworkers. In person conversations aren’t the best because people can give off false information about themselves.
I think all social media outlets can really be a good thing if they are used wisely but they can also be the cause of much trouble when used foolishly. Facebook posts have cost public safety personal a lot of jobs in the last few years. We can spend some more time talking about Facebook later. For now, I want to speak about those other social media outlets that have caused employees that I know to get in hot water. I know of three that have really caused more than a few public safety, personal a few days without pay. They are Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. It amazes me how many adults think and tell you when interviewing them after an incident that they did not relive or know that when you hit the delete button that what they had just hit send is not really deleted. Do you ever find yourself procrastinating from a task due to scrolling on Instagram or Facebook? Social media is a controversial topic, however, it overall has a negative impact on humans. Both sides believe they are in the right and the other is wrong, but the fact still remains that social media is not essential for a career and it steals your concentration abilities. Some people accept that social media is an advantage due to evidence proving that there are many job opportunities that can get many individuals employed, but it isn’t all that it seems to be because that claim is highly inaccurate.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.

These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.

It can distract you from your family, work, and school work. It can distract you from special events and moments with your family. You can be so caught up in your sites you’re missing the most important events of your life. It can become an easy distraction from work and school work. Some people may just need to take a ‘break’ and then can get too caught up on social media that they will fail to return to their work. “Many companies have blocked social networks on their office Internet as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work” (Ta).
