The power of social media has just barely been tapped for recruitment, engagement, and interactive communication in the world of sports. Advantages of using social media to reach out to the public as well as recruiting the best players using Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites with few drawbacks, tech-savvy universities and sports media personnel stand to reap the benefits exponentially. The use of social media in the sports world has grown astronomically and will only continue to do so. The use of Twitter, and more rarely Facebook, has become an accepted means of communicating with the public. In previous years when social media just started booming, some coaches prohibited the use of social media by players all together. Since …show more content…
Rather than depending on high school coaches, university athletic recruiters and coaches are now using social media sites to communicate and gather personal information about their prospects (Trotter). Athletic departments use technology tools to connect with prospects more quickly and more often. Many programs can share much more about their programs and athletic facilities before the players ever step foot on campus (Talty). Coaches have shared that they can keep up with which of their rivals are also recruiting the same players. This medium also gives coaches and programs a chance to weed out possibly problematic …show more content…
Professional athletes are beginning to learn how to use social media to connect with their fans. Shaquille O'Neal uses his twitter account to hint at locations where he may be for meet-ups with his fans (Pickering). However, it doesn't take celebrity status like Shaq's to make an impact on social media. Nick Swisher, a baseball player for the Cleveland Indians isn't known so much for being a superstar ball player, but also gets attention for having quite a personality on his Twitter page. His popularity ended up landing him a role in Super Bowl commercial for Mercedes-Benz. This not only increased his own popularity, but also helped raise money for a charity that he supports (Pickering). Fans enjoy being able to easily connect with players through social media like Twitter. This creates a more personal connection to their favorite teams as it makes them feel as if they are truly part of the
The LA Galaxy team has done several things quite well to help market the franchise. One thing that I believe is working very well for the Galaxy franchise is the fact that they have embraced the various digital social media applications like Facebook and Twitter to name two of the many formats and platforms currently in use and remain ready to engage new social media formats and platforms as they emerge. Because of the Galaxy’s success with social media, they successfully obtained 1.3 million fan users (Kerin & Hartley, 2017, p. 343). Even with their current success
College recruiting is something that was created for the good of college sports, but is often used for such unethical actions that will make anyone with a soul cringe. In 2004, University of Colorado’s athletic department used alcohol, drugs, and sex to lure recruits during official campus visits (Gerdy). These actions are immoral on a number of levels, and should not be tolerated. If this type of behavior continues to be seen in college sports, then serious changes need to be made. Illegal recruiting that takes place in NCAA athletics is unethical, gives colleges unfair advantages, and jeopardizes player’s eligibility.

College coaches of all sports steered clear of recruiting middle schoolers and focused the majority of their time evaluating juniors and seniors in high school. In many of today’s sports, if an athlete is not committed by senior year, the chances of that athlete competing at a large school is very slim. This argument varies for each sport. In the past, their were very few lines of communication between the player and the coach. There was no texting, emailing, or calling. All communication took place face to face or through hand written letters. The coaches also did not have the same coverage of athletes that they do now. There were no recruiting websites or the sending of film, coaches travelled to numerous high schools a week to watch recruits play live. This puts a lot of pressure on the athlete, knowing their future rides on their performance of that game. Recruiting was simpler in the past. These coaches did not put the same amount of pressure on young kids as they do now a days. (Matthew, "How Recruiting of Elite Athletes Has Changed in Less than 20
They all have policies restricting when players can be on social media, including the times when players are no longer allowed to be on social media prior to games. NFL policy says that players, coaches and operations staff cannot use social media less than 90 minutes before the start of the game. NBA players can be on their phone’s a little closer to game time, as the NBA’s social media deadline is 45 minutes before tipoff. NHL players are banned from social media use starting two hours before faceoff. The NHL’s policy is similar to the two previously mentioned leagues in that all three say their players must continue staying off social media after the game until all traditional media obligations have been completed. Baseball players have a slightly different set of rules to follow. MLB social media dictates that players, uniformed personnel and clubhouse staff cannot use cell phones or other devices in the clubhouse thirty minutes before game time, as well as on the field or in the bullpen once batting practice has started. That is not the only policy difference for MLB, because once the game ends, the rules are no longer in effect (Hums, 2013). Players can feel free to go on Facebook or Instagram immediately after the game, without worrying about talking to reporters

When video gaming became popular in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, would you have ever believed it could be a collegiate sport? Thousands of college students play video games mainly for entertainment but many have become very competitive with their past time. This competitiveness has led to the world of e-sports. Colleges, including UNA, are beginning to recognize and welcome e-sports on campus, but may be reluctant to accept it as a sport that would include scholarships. The first college to award a scholarship to an e-sport team member was Robert Morris University of Illinois.
I find social media a perfect way to stay in the loop of what is going on with my friends. Although Eva likes to post pictures of her favorite celebrities, I enjoy using twitter to stay up to date on my favorite sports teams and players. We all can agree that although we do not post selfies or constantly update social media on what we are doing at that very moment, we enjoy benefits social media gives us.
